View Full Version : Athletes you like for stupid reasons

I was watching the Tigers/Rangers game, and it made me think of Michael Young. I remember him with the Jays, and thinking "Baseball Mogul says he's good AND young, what the hell!!" when they got rid of him for something crappy... and I've kind of rooted fro him ever since.

Anyone else have athletes they like for stupid reasons? I'll eliminate Bo Jackson.

My buddy used to love Mike Easler for 2 reasons...

1. His nickname "the hitman"
2. His picture on a baseball card where he was sort of looking up at the time and he looked mean...

I always thought that was pretty strange reason to like someone.

He's a somewhat obscure former MLB player, but I went to Junior High and High School with Damion Easley. I didn't know him very well but I sat next to him in one class and he nicknamed me 'White Bread'. I followed his career on that alone.

I played craps with Marc Bulger one night and thought he was a pretty fun and down to earth guy. (I think the table was pretty hot though so I guess you kind of enjoy playing with almost anyone if you are making money) Always wondered why he never really got a shot anywhere else.

Speaking of Baseball Mogul, he was a BEAST in (I believe) the original version.

I remember Julio Cruz Jr. being a beast in the first version of BBM I ever played. Dude would hit 800+ HRs every career. It got to the point where, when I started a career, he was my first acquisition.

For me, it was Steve Garvey.

My grandma met him at an expo in Salt Lake City, explained my love for baseball and how small I was and wasn't getting a chance to show off my abilities.

He sat down, wrote an entire letter to me, telling me to hang in there, the drills to practice and focus on and what was needed to succeed. He then signed it.

She was excited to give me the letter. It was pretty inspiring to me, I immediately took all my money and went to the card shop and bought every Steve Garvey card the guy had.

My Steve Garvey experience is a bit different. When my wife (then girlfriend) was working for the VA Hospital here in Phoenix back in 2003 he came in to visit patients and she was involved with escorting him through the facility. He hit on her which isn't necessarily cool, but I admired him for having good taste. :D

Plus after she told him she was taken he autographed a baseball for me, so all is forgiven.

Back when I went to New Orleans VooDoo arena football games, my favorite player was a WR/LB named Lamont Moore. He was my favorite player because he wore a long-sleeved white t-shirt with puffy sleeves under his purple jersey. It wasn't as bad as the Seinfeld puffy shirt, but it was still pretty amusing. After one of the games, I asked him to autograph my VooDoo baseball cap because he was my favorite player. He looked genuinely surprised to hear that, which is understandable because he wasn't one of the team's most popular players. At the next home game, I asked him to autograph my other VooDoo baseball cap, and he obliged.

I still wear both caps fairly often, although his signature has started to fade off them since he signed them 7 years ago.

When I was pretty young and discovered football, I had a football card of Bill Stanfill:

http://www.footballcardgallery.com/pics/1974-Topps/133_Bill_Stanfill_All-Pro_football_card.jpg

I think it was mainly the ominous clouds in the background, but for some reason I think I got seduced into thinking he was more than just a pass rusher - maybe some sort of powerful magician storm-caller wizard type of guy, too. Pretty badass, especially to a six year old.

Today, I explain my lifelong fondness for the Miami Dolphins in more approachable terms (undefeated team, guys named Griese and Csonka, cool unis)... but the partial reality is I'm in a very small share of guys who got on board with them back in the "Bill Stanfill Era."

I've always had fond memories of Mark Janssens simply because I loved taking the Whale in the mid-90's EA NHL games and yelling "Mark My Janssens!" at the top of my lungs whenever I could get him to score or lay out a nice hit against my brother.

Great Thread

1. Al Oliver - His 1982 Strat O Matic card was beastily, so when my beloved Giants acquired him in 1984 I was convinced we were going to win 100 games. Alas we went 66-96

2. Brady Quinn - as a Notre Dame fan I had high hopes for him as an NFL prospect. Ones that he has fulfilled winning 5 Superbowl championships. Albeit all in my own Madden or Head Coach franchises, but still.

3. Jed Lowrie - Red Sox backup IF had good ratings in latest OOTP version and filled a hug whole on my 2011 Giants team that I actually played out every game. His OPS was over .900 all year and led us to the best record in MLB.

4. Edin Dzeko - I know NOTHING about soccer, but FM 2010 was such a brilliant game I got sucked in and played a few seasons. Dzeko was a player who I worked a full game year to get since he looked like he had potential. After I transferred for him (I know that is not right, but not sure how it is usually phrased) He led the premier league in goals, won footballer of the year and led my team to the premier league title.

I am sensing a theme here, at least since I am posting in this forum the overwhelming majority will understand, where as in the real world the overwhelmingly majority would not.

Alan Ashby - I had his baseball card when I was younger. When we played baseball with the cards (ok, we weren't the only ones who did that, right?), he was in his catcher's stance which gave me a good target to pitch to.

Quentin Daily - He was a good friend of my sister's and gave me a couple of pairs of shoes and tickets to the games when I was a kid.

Glenn Robinson - My mom taught him in elementary. Played basketball with him on the same high school team.

LaTroy Hawkins - Played basketball with him a few times when we were growing up.

Besides Steve Garvey.....

Jim McMahon, we played at rival high schools my sophomore year (Layton) before I moved back to Salt Lake City.

He was a senior at Roy HS and had a tricked out Dodge that he used to race on weekends. My friends big brother had a Camaro and those two would always go at it. We would hang out and drink beer after, sometimes during, these races and he was always pretty cool, even though he was cocky as hell even then.

He is actually the reason BYU is my favorite College team, even though as an honor code abusing non-mormon I would never have lasted a day there. He shouldn't have lasted a day either, except being a helluva quarterback trumps the honor code :)

Nice topic :)

1. My "baseball card" guy. For some reason, this was always my favorite card - and because of it was always a Wilson fan.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yKSo5xPjLpM/SZpaxyVxtRI/AAAAAAAAG_I/BPeiMcbuBAA/s200/Willie_Wilson_80.jpg

2. My "Statis Pro Baseball" guy. Doug Bird - he had a sic SPB card one year, and I took special interest in his career. If you didn't play it, there was basically 2 "rolls" to determine a play. The first roll determined which card to look at (hitters or pitchers). A pitcher had a rating of 2-5, 2-6, 2-7, 2-8, or 2-9. I remember he had a 2-8. Then the 2nd roll determined the result which was a number 11-88. His was like 11-13 singles, a 14 walk, and a 15-88 "Out".

3. And my favorite player was Alan Trammell. As a young Tiger fan in the 80s, I had some characters and talented players to root for (Gibson, Morris, Senor Smoke, Parrish, etc.). My favorite was Trammell because we shared a birthday.

RB John Humphries, because of how beastly he was in the GEFL for me.

As a kid, I thought Scott Garrelts (pitcher for the Giants) was amazing. Mostly because I had a bunch of his baseball cards, he had HUGE glasses, and he was supposed to be good. He was actually quite good, but not the ridiculous stud pitcher he was supposed to be.

Ahh yes, I think we all have those Pre Season or Spring Training guys who capture us for 2-3 weeks. I think it was Gizmo Williams for the Eagles back in the early 90's. Was it Butch Huskey who made a career for himself off a monster spring training for the Mets? Not that he didn't have a decent career otherwise but he came from nowhere that year and hit like 10 bombs in the spring.

Israel Sanchez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sanchis01.shtml), he of 42 career innings pitched for the Kansas City Royals in 1988 and 90.

I had his 1989 Upper Deck baseball card and it was my only 89 Upper Deck card. Not sure how I got it, probably in some variety pack. Anyway, I was at a Royals-Brewer game in 1990 and saw Sanchez warming up. So I yelled his name and started waving.

The look on the guys face was hilarious, as he was pretty much an unknown player at a visiting stadium and some 8 year old is screaming his name and waving like he is some superstar.

Greg Pearson, Burton Albion - FM 2011 is what I owe this to. One of the longest careers that I had in the game started with Burton for several seasons and he was a star early on and had a couple 40 goal seasons for me. He seemed to have a very good first step and was able to get around a defender with ease (until we were promoted a couple levels). Actually started to follow Burton online now thanks to this.

Ironically, for another thread I guess, a player that I dislike for stupid reasons would be Shaun Harrad from Burton. He wasn't on the team for my career but in FM 2010 I had a couple different careers with teams where I had to play against Burton and he always killed me and would lead the league in goals. Then when I tried to take a stand to get him on my team I got fired fo it. D*** him!!!! :)

Mike Trout - From my home town, my brother went to school with his father and how can he not be the official FOFC favorite with that last name. :)

Ray Rice - A Rutgers guy that I would have loved to have seen the Eagles draft.

Sad. I've always wondered if it's a purely mental thing with some athletes and not being able to make it at the pro level. Clearly, they have the ability to do what needs to be done...is it just that they can't function at the speed of the pro game? That mentally it's just not all there? Weird.

Pat Borders, the Blue Jays catcher.

In 1988 I went to a Richmond Braves and we had seats in the first row right where wire screen ended. I had my Sporting News propped on the top of the low wall. Borders was in the on deck circle, Richmond made a pitching change and he spotted the SN, wandered over and picked it up and looked up his stats.

I said, "I saw you last month in Baltimore when you pinch hit." (He was on injury rehab assignment with Syracuse now). "You flew out to center."

He nodded, then actually spat on the field and kicked the wall. "Yeah, and the bases were loaded, too."

That was the kind of old school player he was. Never more than a decent platoon catcher, he did go on to be MVP of the 1992 World Series and I've never been more excited about anyone getting that honor in all my life.

One of the all time great SOM cards. Kind of player I would always "trade" for as a kid. Nice find!

Here's a Perkins stat for you:

In 1982, when facing a starting pitcher, his average was better the first at bat than the second at bat. Either he forgot how to hit the pitcher or the pitcher figured him out in one at bat. He played in 125 games that season.

1st time .322
2nd time .211

That was the kind of old school player he was. Never more than a decent platoon catcher, he did go on to be MVP of the 1992 World Series and I've never been more excited about anyone getting that honor in all my life.

I like this story a lot, good stuff.

Bob Dernier was awesome in a MicroLeague season I did once (probably because I entered his stats wrong).

I was a Cowboys fan because I started watching football when I was 5 or 6 and what 5 or 6 year old doesn't love cowboys?

Butch Johnson for the California Quake

Ken Burrough because he wore 00

players I liked because of their name:
Garth Butcher
Thane Gash
Reggie Tongue
(all 3 have been rpg characters for me at some points).

Jesse Orosco. I think it was the 1996 playoffs, freshman year at college, I remember him just taking on a mythical status for some reason among the guys on our floor. I put up a ridiculous website about him where I had fictitious interviews and stories, which all portrayed him as an arrogant, drug-addled maniac with aspirations for world domination. Good times. Got a decent amount of web traffic.

My step daughter's all star softball team beat Jesse Orosco's daughter's all star softball team. I wish I knew about your website or I would have congratulated him on his sobriety.

Nice find!

Here's a Perkins stat for you:

In 1982, when facing a starting pitcher, his average was better the first at bat than the second at bat. Either he forgot how to hit the pitcher or the pitcher figured him out in one at bat. He played in 125 games that season.

1st time .322
2nd time .211

wow, that explains a lot on why he never fully developed.

BTW - the "find" was in my garage - about the only thing I have hung on to all these years are my SOM cards - as much as I prefer the games we have now, something about the cards is perfect to me. I am sure most of it is Nostalgia, but there was something about the way you can look at a card and tell how good a player was that I miss.

Yes. Consistency was definitely not his strongest attribute.

I'm totally with you on the nostalgia thing. I still have a lot of my cards from when I was a kid (mostly 70s and 80s cards) and I know exactly what you mean by just looking at the stats. Many of those stats went into my MicroLeague Baseball General Managers disc.

Joe Borowski - Just seemed like a guy who should be pitching beer league softball games but was a pretty good closer for the Cubs.

Chad Ochocinco - I know most find him obnoxious but I think he's hilarious.

He wasn't my favorite player (by any means) but I always liked Chris Sabo because he wore those stupid goggles when he played. I wore glasses at the time (I was about 14-ish?) and always wished I had goggles like he had when I played baseball.

I always had an irrational dislike for him because he beat out Mark Grace for ROY in 1988 :)

Cornelius Bennett because I usually played with the Bills in Tecmo Super Bowl and I would rack up a lot of sacks with him.

Yeah, I had a fondness for Dennis Gentry for much the same reason. Pretty sure I scored with him more than Walter Payton.

Jason Williams ... because "White Chocolate" is a sweet nickname. Plus, he was smooth. :)
