View Full Version : A couple questions about single player league

I am just into the single player leagues and not really the multiplayer leagues. I do have a couple questions though.
1. How does the computer pick players for the Hall of Fame. Does it go on stats and stats alone or does it put other things into consideration. Such as how successful they made their teams and how many championships they may or may not have won. Also do they pick players for teh hall of fame much like they do in real life. And even if you don't get in immediately you will still have a chance in later years. Or if you don't get put in immediately after the five years is up you won't ever get in.
2. Do coaches matter all that much or is it mostly just about what players you may or may not have. Will certain coaches get more out of their teams then others will and perhaps some others will get less out of them.
Thanks.

I can't really answer #1, but #2 definitely takes place in the game. Your coaches are all rated for different things, your coordinators have ratings for how well certain positions will perform under them and how well young talent will develop for them. Your head coach also has a young talent rating, but has more general ratings like motivation, discipline, etc. I can't say empirically how much of a difference there is, but it's definitely there.
For me, the most crucial is the lead scout position. About the only thing I really dislike about FOF is that you can only change coaches when their contract is up, you can't negotiate extensions (so coaches can accept higher bids elsewhere without you having a chance to match) and the coach bidding process goes very quickly so sometimes, even if you are offering a lot of money, you can get left out to dry very quickly.

So does this mean you can't fire coaching staff mid-season?
I have never played past 1 year and have been thinking about going more in depth with this game now and all of these little tips and tricks I see on this board have been helpful to say the least.

I've never found a way to fire staff midseason, or even mid-contract. But with all the positives of this game, interface is not one of them, and it wouldn't surprise me if there are things I don't know even though I've played this for a while.

FOF MP Offseason Helps and Hints - Front Office Football Central (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=79247)
If you go down to the coaching section in that thread theres good info that should help you. I dont think I have ever seen anything on how the hof works.

If you want to "fire" a guy mid contract all you have to do is offer another guy his job during staff hiring. And if you are worried about another team hiring your guy what I do is save the game before I run the stage and if someone else hires him I reload the league then run ut again.

I know they do make it possible to do stuff like that. But I always viewed it as kind of cheating whenever something happens you don't like you just start it over. Just like playing a game over that you lost.
One of the very first career sims they ever had (Front page sports football pro) automatically saved the game once it was done so people couldn't do this.
To each his own and they can play however they want since they bought the game. But if you do do that say that you do play things over before you go around bragging about how good your records and stats are

I actually do the save and reload if it doesn't work out gimmick during coaching hiring. It is gaming the system somewhat, but I only do it because the system in place is entirely unrealistic and can leave you entirely screwed if it doesn't work right. It's one thing when you bid highly for a coach from elsewhere, but I absolutely do not agree with a system where your current coach can leave you for a higher bidder without you even knowing that you were being outbid until he signed with another team. Coaches do resign and retire in the NFL, but it doesn't happen after all the good coaching candidates have been signed, which is what happens in FOF.
The owner-implemented financial restrictions add a curveball to coach hiring that I like, but the lack of ability to retain your current coaches without them being pried away is a restriction I refused to be a slave to, when the alternative is seasons with a coach not worth 1/2 the money I was willing to pay a good coach. And it makes all the other moves I've made with my team while playing the game nearly irrelevant when I get stuck with a worthless coach.

Well to each his own again. But it does kind of make me wonder how many of the people who brag about their exploits on the game are actually just playing the games over that they didn't play well in.

If I wanted to brag I'd be playing multiplayer. I don't expect anyone to be impressed by my single player accomplishments, I just play for enjoyment. The coaching system as it is really hampers my enjoyment when the sloppy system leaves me dry for no good reason, but there's no other reason to play other than to see how well your team can do. If my team really sucks I'll take the very high draft pick and try again next year.

HOF seems to be based on stats, although there may be a hidden field for HOF criteria. Most QB who start >12 or so years make it. Around 100 sacks seems to be a point of getting in. >12000 rushing or receiving yards. Obviously these are not exact guidelines. DB and OL just really have to be amazing to get in. Tons of pancakes or picks, plus a long career. Don't know of rings matter, but would assume so.
One shot to get in, have to get 80% 5 years after eligible.
Player goes into the Hall as a member of the team he played the most seasons for

Coaching/Staff-
I just try to find the best young ones and sign them for 5 years at a time. If you have a good team, they seem to improve. I will usually keep the staff for about 25 years if possible. Injury avoidance seems to matter. It's hard to say if something like motivation or play calling matter if you already have a good team.

I was a front page sports guy too. Ashame the football series ended so badly. I can see how you could see that as cheating and I would agree with you but sometimes people are doing solo leagues to try out certain things. So if you set up a solo league to see if you can build a team that can win with only a strong defense it would suck to lose a good defensive coach after putting in a couple seasons building your team and staff.I think if you are playing for competion multi player leagues are the way to go.

Only if you choose to put a lot of effort into playing it and learning the game.
I've read through some of these threads for a while now and it seems that many folks here put in a lot of effort into forming gameplans, calling plays. etc...etc....
That sounds neat but that is far more time then I would choose to put into it. I just like to draft, trade, sign free agents before the season starts, and then let the coaches take care of the rest. And if the coaches aren't doing their jobs try to find some different ones (or some different scouts).

It doesnt really take that much to learn things. You can pick up a lot in a league just from being around smart people. Drafts/trading are way more fun in a multi player league too.You should atleast try to grasp the basics with game plans. I mean you dont want to draft and trade for zone guys only to have your coach play all man to man. Or build a team to run the ball only to have a coach throw it all the time.
