Sitting here watching my son play & I'm struck by how much the maps I've seen look like other maps - from MW2 or in at least one case highly reminiscent of a BF3 map.

I get the feeling that the combat genre has just about reached the point of recycling when it comes to settings. I haven't seen anything on 3 so far that looked the least bit original or unique.

I think you probably just hit on the key to its success.

It's not the best game I've ever seen by a long shot, but even for people who suck at it like I do, there's a pretty good fun factor (at least until my suckage causes a rage quit).

Once again I find myself thinking/saying that Battlefield is almost certainly a better game but MW is considerably more fun to play.

I'm actually kinda itching for some Left 4 Dead. I haven't bought a regular shooter in quite some time. Maybe I'll put one on my Christmas list.

I mean yes I feel bad getting 5 kills and getting killed 15 times but on the other hand I dont play 24/7 either.

If I did play this a lot and sucked I would feel bad. I honestly think some people play this game 100 hours a week when it comes out.

I have a bad habbit of hitting the L3 button(knive) on PS3 when I am aiming at someone coming at me therefore completely screwing me out of a lot of them 50/50 kills. Sucks.

I rented it from RedBox, cause I probably won't get it until Xmas.

-I really like the new strike system. Especially the support ones, which don't reset after you get killed. I like how you get a "kill" for securing a point in domination. IMO it's the game to play on this.

-excessive EMP spam is an obvious downside to this system, as is the amount of stealth bomber attacks.

-still way too many dorky fuck kids running around with twin smg's, hopping around, ducking, diving and otherwise playing like douches.

Passed through level 40 over the weekend during a brief diversion from Skyrim.

I suck at pretty much everything,with a K/D around 0.67 and accuracy under 12% (the latter heavily contributing to the former apparently). Unlike BlOps, I suck at FFA and I'm not much better at Domination (which were my two main modes after about my 3rd prestige of 7+).

The only game mode I seem to be halfway decent at consistently is Kill Confirmed, which (like Domination) is contributing to my awful K/D since both of those carry a pretty high chance of dying when going after bigger picture rewards.

Yeah, some days I do good, but there will be these 5-19 type games in succession. I was closer to a .8 in previous versions. I don't have a feel for the maps and such right now

A mixture of both. I manage to find abt 2 to 3 hours per day. KDR is around 1.3 Not great, but i have a consisteny group i play with, which helps you get killed less. :)

I exclusively use 5 guns, (the best ones in the game, imo)

ACR, PP90, Striker, AS50, Type95.

For easy XP, i recommend grabbing the recon drone support perk. Each time you tag an opponent it earns you equivalent xp to one kill.

Never run around corners. :) actually don't abuse the sprint, that half second recovery to raise your gun will often get you killed.

Assassin is your best friend. Too many UAVs in the game.

Also, i only play Team Death Match, Domination and Ground War.

I just started using the ACR since I just unlocked it. Up until then, I had been using the SCAR almost exclusively. I'm impressed by anyone who can use the Type95 well. My aim isn't good enough to use a burst weapon.

Don't overlook all the various bonus opportunities. I've almost reached OCD proportions about those and they're speeding my leveling considerably.

Conventional wisdom says not to get caught up in those too much, that you're better off getting kills with better weapons/attachments than trying to chase bonuses but since I seem to suck pretty consistently regardless of my load out, it certainly doesn't seem to do any harm.

Quite a few of them I do.

Through Prestige 2 + Lvl 51, I've maxxed out at least once on
UMP, SCAR, ACR, CM901 and FAD

I've got at least one kill with every AR, SMG, and LMG. I've got at least 10 kills (the first bonus level) with all but 5 or 6 of those (of like 21 total).

Meanwhile, I've also gotten at least one max bonus for a lot of the perks & proficiencies as well, plus a lot of the daily & weekly challenge bonuses.

By the same token, through 211 levels I've got a total of 5 shotgun kills, 0 sniper rifle kills, and 0 riot shield kills. Similarly very few people kills with secondary weapons (although I loves me some Stinger on aircraft)

Basically I try to hit what's reasonable for me & fits my play style. Some guns just don't work for me (such as the MP-7 SMG), some of the perk/proficiencies don't suit me either, and those things I don't chase. But with the areas that I'm passable (by my standards) at, I'll get what I can out of the bonues, down to realizing that I may not have time enough to get another 200 kills with one gun for 10k, so I switch off & finish the upper 70's levels with another gun that I can hit the 10, 25, 50, 150, etc bonuses with.

When you suck like I do (lifetime K/D of about 0.72) every little bit helps :)

Just entered 3rd prestige ... 22 hours & 29 mins of gameplay from last Sunday morning until tonight to get from 2nd prestige. Almost wholly a tribute to the power of bonuses, 'cause I still suck.

Suck or not though, I'm pretty pleased with myself, that's something that I never would have thought I could accomplish in a million years.

Still grinding myself, albeit slower this time. Maxxed out the kill bonus for the SCAR this week, at P3+Lvl 69 now. Give or take, this trip through prestige is gonna take about two weeks total by the time I'm finished, but I've not really been cranking super hard on it like I did the last one.

Drop Zone is fun as shit. If you can get past not having your own kill streaks. It it is one of those things where if you get on a bad team, I could see hating it. But a balanced game can be amazing.

I'm still grinding my way to P1. I am at 42 hours played and level 73. I've decided that I can't play multiplayer after about 9:00 at night. I don't know if I get tired and my reflexes slow, or all of the good kids are playing by then. I had one match a few nights ago with 0 kills and 13 deaths.

There's definitely differences in player quality at different times of day. I've found a pretty decent slot for my (lack of) skill level after midnight until around 230a (eastern). By 3a-330a, my ass starts getting kicked pretty hard again but in that little window earlier, I can at least finish in the top half of most F-F-A boards.

Probably the easiest time I've ever found is Sunday mornings between about 930a until somewhere around lunch. I'm in pretty good shape for those hours but know it's time to get offline when the Mexican players start to dominate things. Seriously, there's some kind of weird shit that happens around noon on Sunday's, there's a steady wave of very good players typically using the flag of Mexico as their emblem & they pwn my ass with great ease & consistency. I've seen the same abrupt increase in other nationalities in a few other time slots (pre-dawn Sat/Sun is great for playing with people in the U.K.) but none of them eat my lunch like the players from Mexico ... who I virtually never see any time other than Sunday early afternoons.

About to (finally) prestige. Running around like a jackass with a Striker shotgun is a good way to make a living. :).

I think I finally fixed a ton of my gameplay issues. I'm never going to be an even 1:1 player, but I'm better than a .60 player.

Brian, one thing that's huge to me is to hipfire a ton. When you attempt to aim, you get wasted. Run steady aim pro if you have to.

I do have an issue with trying to aim too much. I am trying to force myself into a habit of starting with hip fire and aiming while firing.

I may have said this before, but I am still amazed by how people can get me in their sights and the sights never leave my body. I have my sensitivity at 2 and I bought GameFreaks controller extenders (which have helped a bunch), but I still miss often. If I could ever lean to snap to center-mass like others do, that would be a big help.

You guys are all way better than me. I think my kill death ratio is a pathetic .46. I still get game at 3-14. Only certain maps I'm that bad. When I try to aim, my gun is all over the place. I can't stop on my target quick enough. I usually swing my sights right passes the target. It get really frustrating.

What's your controller sensitivity set at? That almost sounds like what happens to me when my slow ass reflexes run into my teenager's high sensitivity settings.

If anyone else has played the game on your console, once in a while the settings will get screwed up & yours become whatever the last person's were. Dunno how that happens, but I've run into it several times over the past few years & it's a nightmare for a old slow guy like me.

edit to add: Also, if your performance is noticeably map influenced (as mine has been, maybe not as much on 3 as previous versions though), see if you can figure out what's helping/hurting you. Until Black Ops I was hideously bad at every run n' gun small map, much much better on long ones. Last two versions it's been almost reversed for me. Either way, with most maps there's ways to accentuate your strengths & reduce your negatives (although not always enough, I still can't play Carbon on 3 for shit).

Jon, what I do in Carbon is stick to the flanks of the map. They are pretty straight foward. The houses and the middle of the map are killboxes that i completely avoid.

Small tip that has worked for me... for those looking to hipfire, PP90M1 with silencer and steady aim, set sensitivity to 3... Hipfire all you want. :) equip with assassin preferrably.

I pretty much gave up on attempting to play the game with any kind of strategy recently. It's all SMG rapid fire, all the time. There's basically no point in using an assault rifle when an SMG can take you out rapidly from any point of sight. I finally pushed the K : D over .7 for a minute this morning. XBL is still way way harder than PS3 IMO.

If you attempt to use any common sense, the harpies will just scream about "camping".

That said, I'm almost exclusively an assault rifle guy & I've managed three straight weeks of 1.00+ FFA K:D ... and I still suck pretty hard at this game.

I'd suggest giving some additional consideration to your positioning, see if you're doing things that make you more prone to getting your ass shot off before you get at least one kill out of it.

I think the most fun I get is destroying air support. Especially before they get one kill from their pavelow. Also, you can get up to 3 points with one shot on a strafe run, if you take out the 2nd chopper in early enough.

Why dont you see more of the recon drone, the little RC helicopter? I used for the first time and had about 20 assists. It was the first time that I had the most points.

I think most people seem to be running Specialist, followed by Assault, with Support trailing behind. That would limit the amount of recon drones we see. You're right though, it can be a point-scoring beast in team play games, especially on a small map like Dome. Sucks on Arkaden though, assholes are mostly inside (although if you can get it launched in the mall then it does okay)

Prestige 8. Grinded it out on Domination with my friends today.

I found myself sticking to the PP90M, Striker, and Barrett for most of P7.

I found Domination more favorable for grinding. Was able to get to my EMPs almost twice per match.

Support killstreaks are the shit. Nothing like hitting an EMP when they have choppers and an AC130 out there.

I do a considerable amount of strategic waiting, if that's what you mean ;)

Over the years, particularly with MW3, I've become more of a shoot-and-scoot guy rather than pure camping. I mean, if I hear someone coming around a corner, it seems idiotic to me to turn a high percentage chance from behind into a 50-50 (or much worse) proposition by running out to meet them head on. And then it's on to the next opportunity.

Still, I'm extremely patient. I have a real knack for being someone's first blood kill, so I'll almost always sit tight at the beginning of a game. On a good day I'm probably a 1.00 K/D player, that's simply as good as I'm going to get over any length of time. I can't just give shit away easily.

And before it even comes up, I'll noobtube someone's ass in a heartbeat, without any real hesitation about it. Even moreso now in 3 where they've been nerfed considerably. I see that as using a tool as the developers intended, unlike quickscopers, who I consider a form of gaming life lower than anyone other than outright boosters. I always hated it but once the devs flatly acknowledged that it works only due to a glitch, my hatred became downright justified.

The other thing that I'd really like to see changed - in terms of playstyle - is to reduce (if not eliminate) the impact of controller sensitivity. Makes the game far too twitchy & reduces even remotely intelligent play horribly.

I "avoid" all of those as well and it works least to some extent as far as I can tell. It seems to be pretty reliably sticky as far as avoiding dumping you back into a lobby with one of them during the same gaming session.

Over time it becomes less reliable, occasionally I'll run into the same horse's ass a few days down the road (and I'll actually remember their name or whatever)

AFAIK you can block messages from a player but not the player himself outright.

The closest thing to that would be using the "avoid this player" tool,which does seem to minimize the chances of ending up in a lobby with them again (just as "prefer this player" makes you more likely to be in a public lobby with them)

Got Prestige 6 yesterday, used this go round to get the rest of the Specialist titles. Really had pretty good success, by my standards at least, with the second LMG (name escapes me atm). It's quite effective as a camping weapon on Village and if you finally get the heartbeat sensor then it becomes very effective indeed.

Bought the DLC map drops (I'm not an Elite subscriber) this week ... honestly they're pretty bad IMO, and my son's opinion of them was even lower than mine I think.

If you aren't gaming frequently with friends, or aren't into spec ops co-op play then I wouldn't be in any big rush about them. 6 maps in all, 2 are spec ops missions, 4 are multi-player maps but of those 4 most are weak sauce stuff like "Carbon".

Liberation seems the most playable of the bunch although it seemed to get the most hate at least initally. Black Box is just an f'ed up mess of a map, Overwatch is a bewildering multi-level maze that maybe people smarter than me can figure out but it seems like random chaos to me, and I have yet to play Piazza for more than a few seconds, have never gotten it for a full FFA match yet but I've watched my son play it a couple of times in other modes, it doesn't look terrible but nothing particularly special about it either IMO.

There's a convoluted way to do it actually, luckily my son is here to explain it to me.

One person joins an FFA game, with one or more open spots in the lobby (or spots that open up)

The others - who are already in a party with Player One - then get a verbal heads up from Player One that there's open spot(s) in their lobby, they then do "join session in progress" (found on Player Ones gamer card/profile). He says the trick here, which is really all about reaction time in order to grab the open slot in a lobby, is for all the subsequent players to be waiting on Player One's profile, so that when he gives the heads up to "Go", they've got a chance to actually get into the lobby. (You're saying "Go Go Go" to them in Party Chat)

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get everybody in, just depends upon the volatility of the lobby really.

I don't run into that problem all that often though. There's still boosters for sure, but it's certainly unusual now as compared to MW2.

What I'm angered beyond words by are the modded controllers / sensitivity to 25 guys. Renders the game damn near unplayable for me. Well, that & the lowest form of gaming life on the universe (short of boosters): quickscopers.

Playing with Quickscopers is awful though. Especially when a pretty good player does it.

Hyper options basically. Automatic dropshots, auto rapid fire, some auto quickscope (not sure whether that one works on MW3 or not tbh).

At one point I think my son knew as many kids playing MW2 with modded controllers as without them. Was a big issue for a while there (he's anti-cheat, actually quit playing with about half his friends because of it).

I just bought MW3 on Saturday when I saw $40 price. It's been months since I played Black Ops. Tough to start over again. I first need to learn the maps.

Not necessarily boosting but teaming together to lock down an area. If I wanted a team, I'd do that instead.

Yup, that would be the dropshot. Kind of the opposite of the "Halo jumpers", which are annoying in their own way, just not nearly so effective as the cheap ass dropshot.

First time I went flying through the air I figured "okay, that was a weird glitch" but when it happened again I figured somebody would have it on the internet ;)

edit to add: Give the video a few seconds & you'll see what I'm talking about. That's exactly what I just saw myself.

I don't have any of the issues of going up against hacked / modded kiddos if I do, I might not realize it.

Aside from this, I finally hit lvl 80, went Prestige and I am at level 17 prestige and I am working to get back up there, I forgot how big of a pain in the ass it is to be low level.

Inspired by my brother in law, I've been doing a fair amount of sniping lately.

Using the ACR, I had my best amount of total kills to date. I'm sure others here have surpassed it, but 35 kills in a game made me smile.

My kill death ratio is up to .94 as well. About a month ago it was around .65. I had a few misconceptions about the game and online play early on...I haven't been much of an online player in years past.

After that gutless Kodos reported me for exploiting a football game I haven't played much online until MW3.

I haven't seen that on PS3....but I think the changes they made greatly improved the game. I didn't get the initial dload either as I updated a couple days ago.

That bit about "changing weapons" brought back way too many memories. That issue rendered MW2 unplayable for me for months.

Found this floating around the interwebz concerning the mandatory 5MB update from a couple of days ago. I didn't even know the "de-rank" hack existed. That would have been hunt-somebody-down-and-kill-them caliber shit right there.

“The emergency Title Update that went live a few days ago was to combat the recent wave of hack and mod attacks. We previously already released a hot-fix that prevented the spread of these virally through joining public matches. However, malicious individuals were sadly still using other propagation vectors to disseminate hacks, including one that could reset a player’s rank.

This TU #11 has tightened our security on these vectors. To be safe, while we monitor the situation, please continue to IGNORE friend invites from anyone you do not know !

Anyone who has suffered from a rank reset please contact Activision with your GamerTag. We shall be reverting all victims to the rank they attained pre-attack.

A fair number of the hard(er)core players I know are strict Specialist guys. I've kinda become one but in my case it's strictly a powerleveling tool, I get a lot more bonus XP that way than with the others.

I love it. I use Scavenger, Hardline, and steady aim as my normal perks. My unlocked are sleight of hand, assassi, and extreme conditioning, then the all perks bonus. I like it because with hardline as my normal one, I get sleight of hand after my first kill which can be a huge benefit.

I haven't really been getting more kills since I've switched (avg. 20 before, now I avg. 22), but I do notice I die a lot less. My k/d is up to 2.5, and I can see it getting to 3 in not too much time.
