Heavy D, the former leader of the hip-hop group Heavy D and the Boyz, has died at the age of 44. The rapper was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles earlier this afternoon and was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. PT. Police are investigating his death but there are no signs of foul play.
Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, broke into the music industry with Living Large, his first record with the Boyz, in 1987. He went on to even greater success with the hit "Now That We Found Love" in 1991, and recorded theme songs for the television series In Loving Color and MADtv. In recent years, D recorded a series of reggae fusion albums.

This. He was 5 years older than I was and his stuff was being played in clubs when I was in high school.

I remember when he was on the Cosby Show. May have been the first rapper I ever heard of.

How many more people have to die just because they refused to focus on keeping their weight in check? Healthy people generally don't drop dead at 44. Such a waste.

There was a different rapper using the moniker Lightweight D?

Rappers aren't making a lot of good music at 44 or later. I would say he died right around his time. He probably lived a fuller life than any of us could ever hope to live.
To a life well lived.

Maybe he should have become "Veggie" - D.

I swear I've never heard of this guy. Not that I ever touched rap or hip hop, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but this is generating more news that I would have thought for someone who I am not, and as far as I recall was not, conscious of.

Call me a killjoy, but I think that because this is not to my taste, no one else should be able to enjoy it.

Um...where did I make any mention of saying he sucked or chastizing anyone for liking him? I don't even know what he sounded like. I was just expressing an opinion that I was kinda amazed that someone so well known could have escaped me all these years, even on a "I've heard the name" basis.

I just think it's pretty funny you are talking about a caricture of anyone, seeing as though your entire persona here is caricature.

If a guy can't publicly state his amazement at his own cluelessness, then what the hell is the internet for?

Right, I'm obviously the expert here, buddy. Please don't make me come down there and tenderly hug you.

"Now That We've Found Love" was absolutely everywhere when it came out.
Title didn't mean anything to me, and I just pulled it up on YT and it might as well have been released yesterday. Usually I'll recognize a melody line or chorus or something, but nope.
Kinda like when I'm listening to Hair Nation in the car and my wife's never heard some song that was pretty much a staple of my high school years, I'm like "How the hell did you go through high school and not hear this song?"
Anyway, I didn't mean to derail the thread. RIP and all that.

I'll be lathered up in soap and down at the gym if you want to stop by for a bear hug.

"Bang it" was the right answer, right? I always hoped he'd do a sequel and let us know.
