View Full Version : So this guy is none too pleased with a Detroit HS football team

Background: Cass Tech became the first Detroit Public School to win the D1 State Title, beating Catholic Central this past weekend. CC is obviously a private school, and a damn good one at that.

For some reason CT winning made this guy incredibly mad:

"Dear Mr. Wilcher,

I had the misfortune of attending Saturday’s game. As I watched, I wondered how many of your players would be academically eligible if they attended a real school rather than a DPS holding tank. While graduation rates may be high, a recent study concluded only 4.4% of DPS public school graduates are academically prepared to advance to higher education.

Questions abound: Do your players regularly attend class? Are they, even by DPS standards, eligible? As one looks at the declining enrollment freshman-senior, it is clear that DPS is a failure and in five years your players will be unemployed, in jail, addicted to drugs or worse. In a word — failures. So while Cass celebrates today, the future is bleak and you and everyone associated with DPS is an utter failure, hence, we have Detroit — a city about to be handed over to a financial manager.

The ghetto warriors had their Saturday but, in life, they are losers.

Jack Baughman"

Are you sure he is white?

Since race was never mentioned in his rant, why was it mentioned in the title of the post? The rant was about the quality of the students' education.

I'll take it out but if you're just going to overlook the implication I have no idea what to tell you. There was not one white kid on the CT football team.

"ghetto" is probably what did it.

He references the CT team as Wilcher's kids. That implies he meant the CT football team which has zero white kids. What else do you need?

Yes, I'm sure that this was the parent of a suburban half-hispanic, half-asian kid who wasn't demonstrating his sour grapes over his well-heeled, well-trained and well-financed team's defeat at the hands of the massive gang horde from inner-city Detroit; but rather, expressing his dismay that they were not taught from a young age that they too with hard work, inertia and a bit of luck could become prides of their race aka investment bankers.

In fact, I bet the part that letter omits is how he's actually been volunteering his time to help the poor <s>unfortunate</s> <s>coloreds</s> kids in those neighborhoods get a better life. But that gets whitewashed because of reverse racism.

"". :D . Look around and see how often ghetto is used to refer to anyone other than black athletes.

I will say that after reading this, I googled the story on Cass Tech's win (http://www.freep.com/comments/article/20111127/HSS1201/111270601/Mick-McCabe-Week-1-loss-prepared-Detroit-Cass-Tech-Division-1-title)and it seemed the internet comments were overwhelmingly positive including alumni of Catholic Central who were congratulating Cass Tech on their victory. Not many comments on the article, so who knows but...this is just the work of an asshat, not seemingly reflective of a broader sentiment.

At least, on the record anyway.

At least Jack Baughman isn't a coward using his real name. Provided it's not an assumed name. Gotta give him credit for his iron balls of writing a letter like that and affixing his virtual John Hancock to it. Better than internet drive-by commenters with handles.

I'd like to point out that Cass Tech is like three blocks away and the best HS in Detroit academically. I've employed roughly 20-25 Cass Tech grads in my 10 years in SE Michigan at Eastern Michigan and now Wayne State. They have class and intelligence. Something the writer lacked.

They did it with a freshman QB no less.

If you google the quote (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmbd.scout.com%2Fmb.aspx%3Fs%3D162%26f%3D1088%26t%3D8353207&ei=k8LVTuauOIaLsQLn_LHwDg&usg=AFQjCNECmScKkX317EFc5XncELPD2xJP2A), it takes you to the Michigan Scout BB, but you can't view the thread unless you're a member of that forum.

It appears to be started from that guys quote somewhere else, so I want to know where that somewhere else is.

Coach is a former Michigan player and hence why you hear some of his players going to Michigan. The QB I already mentioned in the recruiting thread.

I can't believe there was any dispute about the obvious racial overtones in this letter. Not to mention that "Jack Baughman" is about as white a name as you can get. Only something like "Chuck Polowski" would be whiter.

Pure class there Jack. Like DC, the only credit this asshat gets is for using his real name, if that was his real name.

Good to see stereotyping is alive and well :banghead:

Dola, seems a few of those future "failures" will be going nowhere in college next year....

I would have to vote Not Hot based on those little chicken legs he's got, though.

Just for reference........I teach in a suburban school. Our average ACT score is about a 21. Our average "readiness" for college is about 16%. That stat is crazily flawed.

Good to see an Iowa recruit getting to an underthrown pass. That will come in handy.

What about someone named Whitey Albino?
