View Full Version : Stud LB Talk

Just wanted to get a discussion going here about what to do with a STUD linebacker. This player in the CCFL made me think about it, and how best to use him:

At the time of writing this, he has all of 11 1/2 sacks through 3 1/3 seasons. Clearly, in his 4th season, the pass rushing numbers are coming on...but is that the right position (WLB in a 3-4) for a nearly maxed out LB?
Obviously getting after the QB is important, but WLB's generally only need 2 good bars to do that. I'm wondering if this stud is being wasted at WLB, and would better served at SLB, where he can blitz, but also cover TE's and RB's and such (I assume).
Worst case, let him wrack up 120 tackles and 3 picks or so at SILB.
Thoughts?

I'm not an expert but probably the best solution is to use him in different slot depending on the opponent (in the middle against a stud RB, WLB against a good pass offense and SLB if you play against a team with a 2TE offense)?

oh, yea. SLB. That kind of coverage ability is just unheard of!

I've followed this LB since the draft. His low sack total seems to be a product of being in a 43. Now that he's in a 34 for chinaski, he's eating up QB's.

I think he will be more disruptive to the passing game if he stays at WLB. His pr% is insane.

You can still get 10+ sacks with a SLB and keep him on the field for the entire game (whereas the WLB is pulled in Nickel and Dime formations). I'd say SLB is alway the better place for the most talented LB....the ILB's are your run stoppers and your WLB is your pure blitzer.

You can play him at WLB in the standard 3-4, then move him to SLB when you go nickle/dime. That way he is on the field as much as possible.

WLB doesn't come off the field in the 3-4...nickel drops the WILB and dime drops the SLB.

hehe...to be fair, I played 4-3 defense almost exclusively until the last year or so...so my mind was (clearly!) not translating who comes off the field properly in the 3-4.

yeah, but I don't think the 3-4 WLB is the 'blitz every down' guy in Dime as he is in other formations.

Fair enough, looks like FOF plays dime as a 3-2-6 and not a 4-1-6.
