Has any one actually worked out why penalties are called. I know it's supposed to be the Discipline of your Head Coach but i have tested this and unless i am doing something wrong in the test it seems to make little difference if your Head Coach has a Excellent or Poor Discipline rating. Years in the job seem to do little either.

Today in the HFL i got called for 17 penalties with a Head Coach with very good discipline. SMH

If any one would care to shed some light on discipline and penalties myself and many other would I think be very grateful.

thanks

set up a league, kept track of how long coaches have been on a team and their ratings and then simmed. I also kept track of the Off and Def Coordinators as well to see if they changed thinsg.

Also in my SP game i have kept records of every penalty given against my team accepted or not, if on offense or defense and for the life of me i can't see anything.

I have looked at this in the past and the HC seemed a big factor. Having said that I just looked at a recent season and discipline and tenure really didnt seem a factor. Small sample size and all that, so it might be nothing. I can't see why anything would of changed unless accidental tinkering by Jim in a patch caused it.

I'm a believer in the discipline rating of the HC being an important factor.

I have been feeling recently that the discipline rating may be overrated. At least, the difference between good and excellent is not very big. Penalities are quite random it seems, so you can have a "good" discipline coach and still take the fewest penalties in the league. Or even have an "excellent" discipline coach and be middle of the pack.

Having said that, looking around at different leagues, it seems that an "excellent" discipline coach pretty much guarantees that you'll be pretty decent at staying out of penalty trouble over the course of a season. You can often be in the top 5 fewest penalties and will almost always be at least in the top 16.

Then again, you will sometimes get the same performance or better with a "good". I would advise staying away from "fair" or "poor", though. I did not investigate those as fully but they seemed to be the opposite of "excellent" in that they can almost guarantee bottom 16 performances.

As for other factors, I was wondering if bars have an impact. Or maybe just play calling in general.

Tenure does not seem to be a factor from my limited testing. At least not a big one... But again, penalties have a huge random factor.

Anyone ever look at holding calls when passing longer?

What ways *could* this be tested? What ratings *could* result in higher/lower penalties? Could intelligence have some sort of role? Would high Intelligence guys who also have high Wants Winner produce less penalties, and if combined with a high discipline HC magnify that even more?

Just tryin' to stir up some discussion.

I'm thinking intelligence, leadership, and red flags might all have a hand in the penalty side of things. Theoretically, anyway. This would be interesting to study in depth.
