First free download of the new year perhaps, as the Christian Rock side project featuring Rich Ward (Stuck Mojo, Fozzy) & Frank Fontsere (Fozzy) debuted at midnight offering the entire album for free. (http://www.walkingwithkings.com/WWKAlbum.aspx)
Unapologetic Christian lyrics, musically it's rather AOR with occasionally modern touches in the guitar work, vocal style ranges from mostly melodic rock with one Stryper-esque track ("Home"), even get a little 70's vibe from another track ("Friends").
Not going to be everyone's cup of tea obviously -- indeed I think it's probably an album where even fans will like one or two cuts better than they like the rest, regardless of which one turns out to be their favorite -- but worth a download if you enjoyed Stryper or earlier Christian Rock artists.

What is "AOR"?
I haven't given this a listen, but I imagine it's rather hard Christian Rock? The only Christian Rock I can think of are Michael W. Smith, Jars of Clay, and then the more modern POD and Switchfoot...all of which I like...

Album Oriented Rock, basically the radio format shorthand for the style of the classic rock era where album cuts were frequently played without as much regard to singles. More recently the phrase "melodic rock" has started to get some use, basically that's hard(er) rock with distinct vocals. In this instance, think somewhere along the lines somewhere between early Journey and maybe Rainbow or something.
Interesting vocal (the singer is actually a metro Atlanta music minister), to be honest I was a little worried after hearing the first track they released a couple of months back but the full project is a lot cleaner (and more traditional mainstream rock) vocally. Sort of Jimi Jamison (Survivor) in several places, although the Stryper-flavored track was one of the better performances here IMO.

Fergie Frederiksen has a great AOR album from last year "Happiness is the Road". Also Mecca's 'Undeniable' was cool too.

I'll admit I had to look up the name, I couldn't place it. Hadn't thought about LeRoux in quite a while.
If you liked this, be sure to check out last year's Kimball/Jamison project that paired the ex-Toto and ex-Survivor (now again current-Survivor) singers.

No one's heard it yet, of course, and frankly, I don't really care as I was never a big fan, but if the album cover is any indication of the quality and time put into the new Van Halen album.... this is going to be an uninspired stinker.

This album came out almost a year ago, but thanks to some year-end best-of lists, I just got around to hearing it a couple of weeks ago. Now I can't stop listening to it.
Ghost - Opus Eponymous
It's a terrific blend of late 60s/early 70s hard rock/early metal, clean vocals that evoke Blue Oyster Cult at its best, fused with lyrics about Satan. It's so damn catchy, I have absolutely no issue singing along with the chorus:
This chapel of ritual
Smells of dead human sacrifices
From the altar...
Great stuff.

So it looks like the rumors were right about VH digging into the old demos for new songs, as the only "new" song they played last night was one from the Gene Simmons demos days, She's the Woman.
Although I guess it's a cop out for a new album to be mostly old unreleased songs, in a way I think it's a smart move, since there's likely no way they'd be able to capture the old sound 35 years later. This will at least ensure they sound a lot like they did in the 70s, which is probably for the best..

Coming up March 13th ...
Adrenaline Mob, the super group featuring Mike Portnoy, Russell Allen, Mike Orlando, Paul DiLeo and Rich Ward, will release its full-length debut, "Omertá", on March 13th via the newly formed Elm City Music in conjunction with EMI Label Services. The 11-song CD, which was produced by ADRENALINE MOB and mixed by Jay Ruston, includes a "blistering" reinterpretation of DURAN DURAN's classic "Come Undone" featuring guest vocals by Lzzy Hale of HALESTORM.

I heard the new single last night on XMLM and was underwhelmed. It was good, I guess, but pretty ordinary. But I don't listen to a lot of the newer mainstream metal bands, so maybe it's just not my cup o' tea. I'm underwhelmed by a lot of them.

Very much with you on Mumford and Sons. It's wait and see on Janelle's album though. I think part of what I disliked about her last one was it being a little too ambitious. There were songs that simply could have been left off the album and I would have been ok with it. Now she wants to do two albums? It just feels like when artist do two albums there's too much filler stuff going on.

Here's something funny about the riff for that song, though. I've been listening to this album non-stop, and you know how when you wake up in the morning, you sometimes have a song immediately pop into your head and you just can't get rid of it? Well, this morning, it was Symphony of Destruction. And I don't own that album and haven't heard that song in ages. About 15 minutes ago, I listened to Ritual and went to the fridge right after, singing SoD. And then it hit me! HA!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Disappointing news, but understandable.
Rich Ward Steps Down As The Guitarist In Adrenaline Mob: When I was first asked about coming on board as the 2nd guitarist for the Adrenaline Mob project, it was understood that every member of the band had other band commitments, most of us having multiple active music projects. We all acknowledged that it would be a challenge to make it work, but we all agreed that the lineup's potential was worth making the necessary compromises in each of our schedules. In recent months it was made clear that after the release of the band's album, scheduling around my previous commitments wasn't going to be possible, and that it would be necessary to make Adrenaline Mob my sole priority. This basically meant that if I was to move forward with the Adrenaline Mob guys, I would only be available to continue on recording and touring with Fozzy, Stuck Mojo, and Walking With Kings, when the AMOB wasn't working. That's a commitment I just couldn't make. So, I contacted Mike Portnoy, and told him that I would need to step down and allow the band to find a guy who has the ability to fully commit to the project the way they need him to. His response was gracious and completely understanding. The experience of playing in a band with Portnoy was amazing. I've never met a more passionate, committed musician all my years, and always a complete gentlemen towards me. Playing with musicians of that calibre was an honor and a privilege, I hope they go on to the great things they deserve.

Musically sounds awesome. Lyrically it's abysmal. They aren't even trying to sync the video with the music as I think some of it is done in reverse. This feels like they should just stick to Vegas, or do a casino tour at this point.

FWIW, I'm pretty impressed with integration of iHeartRadio into XBox Live. Connection between actions (likes, recently listened, etc) on XBL & PC are blazing fast, virtually instantaneous and that's quite different than my limited experience with some of the other apps ported over to XBL.
Also thought iHeart did quite a bit better job of picking songs as part of a custom artist station (used Kyng as a test). 1st 4-5 songs were from bands I've absolutely never heard of but there was a clear logic behind why the songs were connected to the baseline artist. Certainly did a better job than anything I would have expected to be produced by Clear Channel.
Odd, it was playing before. It literally sounds like Nickleback with a different guitarist and Chad able to sing higher when need be.
Huh, makes me think I can bring back my old band from 1989-1994 and re-issue our songs. :) What was once dated is now cool again, LOL.

Odd video, audio-only released by the band themselves with all four songs in full but all in a single video.

Cut #3 Daughters of Darkness would make Doro proud, #4 Here's To Us for some reason reminds me of GN'R but with Lzzy's killer voice, #1 Love Bites is right in line with the bad girl tone of their earlier stuff, not as impressed by #2 Rock Show but maybe it'll grow on me.
edit to add: In a completely different vein, I'm still chuckling at my reaction to the first time I heard Foxy Shazam's I Like It. I had to invent a new personal music award "Most Unexpected Lyric" :)

Ghost - I agree these guys are bad ass. I was so excited to see the tour announcement of Mastodon, Opeth, and Ghost. The three bands I've probably given the most playtime over the last three years.
Hard Honey - exactly as you described. I hear Nickleback, Slaughter, and Def Leppard in the songs. It's a revival of the 80's.
My addition to these fine previously described acts is Revocation. I learned about them in several best of '11 lists focusing on Metal. It's thrash, it's hardcore, it's death, it's Joe Satriani??? Yep it all works. I've been burning them up on my Spotify.
Speaking of Spotify, they have added apps. One is Tunewiki which shows the lyrics of the song you are listening to. A big help to me as when I was a youngun I loved reading the album liners and following along with the song lyrics. Then that progressed to tape and then CD liners, but now we just download the shit and don't have a way to follow up unless we go to lyrics.com or something. This fills that gap. They also have a app to let your friends DJ for you like that that one site that I can't recall at the moment.
For the new movement phase, I can't believe I beat Ksysrup to this, but the new Lamb of God dropped today. I am enjoying it quite a bit over the last release, Wrath. A lot of die hard metal heads are saying it's more of the same, but I see a good diversity on the new album and enjoy it quite a bit. One of my favorite bands for sure. Not exactly Ashes of the Wake, but I like it. Enjoy Ghost Waliking:

The few clips I've heard have been OK, far better than Tattoo (that song is awful). I don't like the production, and Dave doesn't sound that great. But otherwise, the way they made this album was probably the best way to do it, grabbing a bunch of unreleased stuff and re-doing them.
King's X did something similar about 10 years ago with an album full of pre-KX songs they re-recorded 25 years later, but the problem there was the songs mostly sucked so it wasn't that great.

I guess I get where Hagar is when he rips on the band at this point. He points out Chickenfoot made an album and wrote new songs for it. VH does an album and it's basically a B-side type of deal.

Six songs from VH's new album. It took some time to adjust to 1978-1984 type of VH versus Van Hagar. It still gives a B-side vibe with virtual no ability to write a chorus. Frustrating hearing the choruses when I hear stuff I like musically elsewhere. "Beats Working" is my fav from the list.

Metallica To Curate Two Day Festival In Atlantic City | Metal Insider (http://www.metalinsider.net/events/metallica-to-curate-two-day-festival-in-atlantic-city)
Yeah, I saw this last week, although it appears the word "major" (as in "major announcement") doesn't mean what they seem to think it means.
Let's be honest, this looks more like the "Mostly Bands We Could Get Cheap Festival" or "Other Than Metallica And A Couple Of Others Who The Fuck Cares Festival"
For the sake of comparison, look at the lineup Metallica "hand picked" versus the Carolina Rebellion coming up May 5th in Rockingham, NC (which is at least arguably weaker than last year's lineup)
Shinedown
Korn
Evanescence
Staind
Five Finger Death Punch
Slash
Chevelle
P.O.D.
Halestorm
Volbeat
Adelitas Way
Paper Tongue
Red
Weaving the Fate
Redlight King
New Medicine
Ghosts of August
*w/ Foxy Shazam for special Friday night concert for campers
Looking at the lineups, seems downright comical for Metallica to hail their show as anything special for any reason other than the full album performance gimmick. That seemed to be how it was received in several places after the announcement too, with a general vibe of "first the Lou Reed thing and now this? WTF?"

Arctic Monkeys
Avenged Sevenfold
Modest Mouse
The Gaslight Anthem
Cage The Elephant

Titus Andronicus

Never in a million years would i have expected her to have anything close to that success when i first heard the Song "Hometown Glory" in 2007, itīs pretty surreal really that an artist like that could not only succeed in the modern music industry but pretty much be the universally accepted artist while also selling better than everybody else.

IMO, this is Metallica circa 1994 trying to look cool, current, and relevant by handpicking a bunch of Pitchfork faves for their festival. I've heard of 5 of those bands.

And with the underlined part lies the rub.
There's essentially one recognizable band that seems like a rational fit ... and since A7X seems to be reviled by the same people who hate anything past the first few years of Metallica's career, there's a certain logic to having them on the show.
Beyond that, Cage the Elephant is probably the next most recognizable act for the fanbase. Then there maybe three bands that most people have ever heard of on the bill, the rest are ciphers that could be just about anything (heck, some of them might even be a logical fit) ... but add little to the appeal.
I'm a believer in their being at least something complimentary about artists grouped together on a show. Don't have to all be clones (indeed, that can backfire too) but either they compliment the primary act(s) or they're strong enough on their own to sell tickets that wouldn't otherwise be bought. I just don't see much of either factor here.

I wouldn't necessarily be breathless with anticipation about some of them either, and I'd sooner have my ears chiseled off with a rusty screwdriver than have to endure the steaming pile that Korn has fully become but while Volbeat is clearly the standout attraction among those I haven't seen yet,
I'm surprised that there's no love for Redlight King from you though, coming off what I thought was an exceptionally good album.
I've seen Staind & would happily see them again and I've made my feeling known about Halestorm already (of current touring acts they're certainly in my Top 10 and might be in my Top 5 at the moment). I wouldn't head to the concession stand without seeing Slash live (just for curiosities sake if nothing else) and since I haven't seen 5FDP they'd also be a highlight. Also surprised that Foxy Shazam wouldn't at least hold curiosity level interest for you.
While Rockingham is simply too much of a haul for me to pull off right now, happily I get a crack at several of these bands the following day in Atlanta, as the local rock station celebrates Cinco de Mayo on the 6th. Shinedown, 5FDP, Chevelle, Hellyeah, Volbeat, Adelita's Way, and Art of Dying.
Pretty good mix of bands for me, 2 I've seen (Chevelle & Hellyeah), 2 I'm very interested in seeing (Volbeat & 5F) and I'm fine with the other three (would have been happier with Shinedown prior to the current single which I think feels very contrived).

I've never heard of Redlight King or Foxy Shazam. Red Fang would be cool, though. But I'll check them out.
The rest of those bands are just a bunch of hard rock/"metal" (I guess) that I have never been able to get into. I hate sounding like the typical old guy who grew up in the 80s, but I just don't like any of it. I've trended toward more progressive, European, and extreme metal in the past decade precisely because those bands are what passes for mainstream metal these days. And that's lead me to pretty much pass on what I have heard, and not be in the loop on other bands that are in the same vein but I might enjoy. Although I'm a huge metal fan, I'm really not current at all with what's popular or emerging on the scene, unless I happen upon it by accident. Someone on another forum brought up Shinedown, for instance, and I have to admit, I've never heard them. Maybe accidentally and didn't realize it was them, but I've never bothered because they seem to be grouped with the type of bands I've already passed on.
I've been a big Volbeat fan for about 5 years or so. Just love the unique mixture of rockabilly and Metallica they bring along with a great melodic vibe and an interesting vocal style. I imagine they would be a strong act live, because they've got some kick-ass riffing songs.

I've never heard of Redlight King or Foxy Shazam. Red Fang would be cool, though. But I'll check them out.
Neither are remotely metal, so for them to stand out in some way for me says something about 'em I suppose.
Foxy Shazam is a band that's gotten some traction with the hipster crowd over the past few years, 70's throwback groove with what's usually described as Freddie Mercury-inspired showmanship (or something like that). Still, what little I've heard is interesting enough to figure they'd either be entertaining live or a spectacular trainwreck. Getting their first taste of rock radio airplay at the moment with "I Like It", a song which caused me to honor them with an award for "Most Unexpected Lyric" after the first time I heard it ;)
Redlight King is one of the lightest things you'll find me listening to, but it's just a damned solid sound. I'm generally an unforgiving sort, but I appreciate the story of the singer who derailed his own career a few years ago while battling both drugs & depression. Now clean, he broke into the consciousness with Old Man last year, impressive enough to get Neil Young to agree to let them sample the song (a first for him), interesting enough to catch & hold my attention despite the unlikely combination of a rap-style intro & a classic rock staple sampled into the middle. It was the current hit Bullet In My Hand that pushed me into fandom though, just really a song that I connected to, a combination of desperation, realism, and optimism that feels like a lot of my days, or at least the better ones.
A lot of the backstory can be found here (http://arts.nationalpost.com/2011/08/08/redlight-king-on-restarts-and-sampling-neil-young/) Hell, his determination to get permission (http://www.alternativeaddiction.com/musicnews/article/2116/Redlight-King-Tells-The-Story-Behind-Old-Man) for the sample earns him a fair listen afaic.
re: Shinedown - Odds are if you've heard them then it's probably my favorites from their catalog, 45, or Sound of Madness, although Crow and the Butterfly got plenty of buzz showing their more AC side.
I can certainly relate to the issues you've had connecting with a lot of the current stuff, we seem to come at this from about the same place. I think the tipping point for me was being able to find music that could dredge up the same energy that I found in favorites back in the day. It's still a challenge, there's a lot of crap out there that I still can't stand, but I think after a decade or more of estrangement from music in general, I've become more able to take things on a song by song basis.
At the end of the day, I'm looking for songs that give me something I can take with me, whether it's a three minute musical sugar high, a lasting respect for talent, or lyrics that impress me with anything ranging from thoughtfulness to a simple ability to turn a phrase.
I'll extend one of those analogies and go so far as to admit that there's more musical "fast food" than anything else at this point. But that beats starving the way I did during the grunge era. At least with some of the post-grunge stuff - a term that took me a while to really figure out but have gotten comfortable with now - I hear something that has some appeal.
The rest of those bands are just a bunch of hard rock/"metal" (I guess)
That's a great point there btw. The lines between what's "rock" vs "metal" are blurrier than ever. And there seems to be a lot more rock than metal creeping into my listening. {shrug} I just take what I can find, that happens to be where some of the more interesting stuff lies at the moment. Ebb & flow and all that.
I've been a big Volbeat fan for about 5 years or so. Just love the unique mixture of rockabilly and Metallica they bring along with a great melodic vibe and an interesting vocal style.
I love me some Warrior's Call, the almost accidental nature of it becoming a breakthrough hit for them amuses me. But that led to backtracking them a bit and running into Guitar Gangsters and they took on a whole new dimension, just really hard to not like what they've done (and seemingly they've largely done what they wanted to do, not sure there's anything else quite like Rockabilly Metal)

If I'm not mistaken, you've got a son you go to shows with, right? Well, that undoubtedly has helped to get you into some of the more recent stuff, as I imagine that would be a cool way to bond with him. For me, I have 2 young girls and my wife refuses to allow me to listen to the heaviest stuff with them around, so I'm relegated to adding a bunch of extreme/death/black metal stuff to my collection for use when they bring their first boyfriends around. :p
I seem to be veering away from the middle ground of rock and either listening to the heavier stuff, or going completely the opposite way with singer/songwriter and power pop stuff.

I tend to be on the front end of finding groups than he is (I still try to check at least every new single every week, just like when I did it for a living) but he's got better recall of the differences between As I Lay Dying and A Day To Remember.

See, I listen to something like this, and all I hear is Nickelback.
Much of the credit I give here is for the idea & the effort. The well-known version of the song is, honestly, catchier IMO.
That said, as I've mentioned in the past, I'm not on the Nickelback haters list either. Burn It To The Ground is one of the ten best songs in the past decade afaic, and of their 27 singles to date (definitely had to look that up) at least 1/3rd are "turn it up" rather than "turn it off" for me.

I don't like Nickelback at all, but I really haven't listened to enough of their stuff to say I'm sick of it or anything. It's not the quality I'm necessarily objecting to, but the fact that it all sounds the same. I've never heard of the band or the song, so I was just going off of that video.
If someone had asked me who it was, I would have put $100 on Nickelback. I guess that sums up the state of rock music these days and why I tend to not even bother checking any of it out, I don't know.

I think you're probably assigning too broad a range to NB honestly. Their songs fit into about four categories -- drunk/horny teen, sensitive, angry, moderately uptempo random topic other than getting drunk or laid -- this cover is really outside of any of those
In the case of Charm City Devils, you're easily excused for not recognizing them, I doubt very many people could. Heck, even I had to Google to recall that they were the contest winning opening act for CrueFest 2 and the first act signed to Eleven Seven Music (Nikki Sixx's label)

It's not so much what the song's about but the sound of the band/vocals. it sounds like NB to me - or at least, what I think NB sounds like. I guess the vocals sound a tad less polished that NB, but otherwise the production sounds like all post-grunge bands I lump together (fairly or not).

Yeah, you're oversimplifying even for post-grunge (which NB probably isn't one of IMO, not at this point anyway).
This is much more like, I dunno, let's say Seether. And comparing NB and Seether is akin, in 80's terms, to comparing Poison and Faster Pussycat.

Ha!
Funny, I was going to bring up Seether, not because I know much about them but from what I've heard, they do have a definite tie to grunge. I thinnk the post-grunge thing is purposely over-simplified, in the same way "alternative" and then "indie" were. They have that sound. The vocalists all have the same general type of voice and sing in the same ways. There's a lot tying them together, even if at the ground level, you can pick them apart.
And coming from someone who hated Poison and loved Faster Pussycat, Iit pains me to say 25 years later that I'd lump them all together with the Roxx Gang's of the hair metal world. I can distinguish them, sure, but unless you're living that world, they're all interchangeable. I guess that's the way I see view/hear rock music since the mid-90s. It's been 15 years of generic rock that sounds like offshoots of Creed and Nickelback.

They, who I've turned out to like pretty well, are the band that seemed to be the one that helped me really get my head around post-grunge as a definition. Oddly enough, it took seeing them live for it to actually click with me I think, prior to that it was a lot more vague term to me. Considering how much I purely hated the entire grunge era/movement/bands/sound, to even be okay with someone fairly labeled as having a post-grunge sound was a pretty big step.
And coming from someone who hated Poison and loved Faster Pussycat, Iit pains me to say 25 years later that I'd lump them all together with the Roxx Gang's of the hair metal world. I can distinguish them, sure, but unless you're living that world, they're all interchangeable.
Okay, given that statement (admission?), I can kind of see how you really don't contemplate the distinctions between NB & Seether, et al.
It's been 15 years of generic rock that sounds like offshoots of Creed and Nickelback.
Probably no shortage of truth to that for a considerable chunk of bands. But with that comes the roots of my re-entry into music fandom too. There are probably three songs that played major roles in me turning music radio back starting in 2000 or so.
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite (probably discovered for me late 2000) ... catchy, even if largely generic
Staind - It's Been A While (April 2001) ... it's in a range I can actually attempt in the car without making myself cringe, always a plus AND it came across as honest rather than whiny
Nickelback - How You Remind Me (July 2001) ... "i've been wrong, i've been down, been to the bottom of every bottle" resonated strongly with me
Pretty much everything else I discovered -- both the lot that I like and the fair number of ones that I actively dislike --since then stems back to those three very accessible songs. Now I can tout Hell In the Club and decry the inclusion of Black Veil Brides at the Golden Gods Awards with the best of 'em :)

My February playlist, about 7 hours worth of current hard rock & metal. Finished with a reorganization last night, figured I might as well share. First 50 songs are getting airplay somewhere, the remainder are a mix of recurrent (i.e. recent hits) and more obscure stuff that probably isn't going to cross your radar unless you're actively following the scene.
edit: The embedded version is the first song in the playlist but it appears to keep autoplaying after that. Probably want to click the little YT link in the bottom corner to get to the full playlist so you can browse & cherrypick.

I loved The Format and liked most of the first Fun. album, but I can't get into this album. There are about 3 or 4 songs that I like, We Are Young being one of them, the rest really disappoint me. Especially the fact that they decided to ruin one of the good songs by doing autotune on Nate's voice near the end of the song. I asked my wife what she thought and she hates the album.
Ksyrup
02-28-2012, 10:24 AM
Yeah, that autotune thing was strange, but I didn't mind it from the perspective that it seemed so over-the-top that it was being used as a sound unto itself, not as a tool to correct his vocal. I'm not sure I like it either way, but if it's going to be used, I'd rather hear it like that (in small doses) than as a barely perceptible fix of a bad vocal.
I've not heard the first Fun album. I'll have to check it out to compare. Some Nights definitely feels stylized for popularity. There are certain sounds/phrasings that I hear in these songs that remind me of some of the stuff my 12-year old listens to. But it's obviously got a bit more substance/musicality to it.

And now I've heard it, or at least the sample AMob posted on their FB.
I was ... less than thrilled. My first reaction is/was that it felt very forced, almost thrown together like "hey we still need Lzzy on a track, what haven't we laid down yet?". One of the weakest cuts I've heard under the A Mob monicker.
Then again, this is a different Mob. No more Rich Ward, new bass player, and given the way things played out (with no ex-members even on the record), I'm a little more cautious about them than I was before. Russell sounds very good on the samples, and I actually like "Undaunted", so I'm sure it'll be fine but I'm just not grooving quite as hard on them as I was when the EP was released.

Just finished listening to Shinedown's new album "Amaryllis".
I'm fine with bands doing what they choose to do at a moment in time, but they have to be fine with me choosing not to listen if they no longer entertain me. Quite disappointed with the new, much lighter direction they've gone here. Nickelback does the same stuff but they do it quite a bit better.
edit to add: And a Nickelback album typically several songs that actually have some energy with them. There's basically one, two if I'm generous, on this album, the rest are like the contemporary rock equivalent of listening to Air Supply.

Trivium did a smoking cover of Creeping Death f. Corey Taylor on vocals and Robb Flynn on guitar. A surprise that was worthy of last year's high standards. Looking forward to seeing that clip show up on YouTube.
Dee Snider w/ Black Veil Brides wasn't bad, I'm just not completely sold on BVB (and as they said moments ago "we don't really give a fuck what you think"). At their best they do deserve the bit of mascara torch passing that took place with that performance, I just don't believe they're consistent enough for that yet. Maybe, just maybe, someday.
That bit of credit given, handing their two guitarists the Guitarist of the Year award earlier in the night was an insulting fucking joke. I can't think they're even among the top 20-30, much less the best.

Okay, that was one of the biggest WTF moments I think I've ever seen on my television.
On guitar for Marilyn Manson tonight ... Johnny Depp.
Manson was awful btw. He looks arguably older than Alice Cooper, the bit with Taylor Momsen was (perhaps intentionally) just creepy, and he sounded fairly fucked up for most of the performance. Dude, you're headlining, lay off the absinthe, it's still early in L.A. you've got plenty of time to drink.
I've been pretty disappointed with anything Manson has done since Holy Wood. Golden Age was all right.
As for Johnny Depp, he is credited as the slide guitarist on Fade In-Out on Oasis' third album, Be Here Now. The story is that Noel was too coked out of his mind during the study sessions to play the part, so Depp did it.

Project Cinco party 2012 - Project 9-6-1 (http://www.project961.com/pages/cinco2012/)
I may be getting too old for all day shows with temps near 90 and t-storms likely ... but I'm not too old for
9:30 Shinedown
8:00 Five Finger Death Punch
7:30 The Beatoffs (idiiot morning DJ's "band")
6:30 Chevelle
5:30 Hellyeah
4:30 Volbeat
3:45 Adelita's Way
3:00 Art of Dying
My expectations? Eagerly awaiting Volbeat. Hellyeah will rock the damned universe again (almost shockingly good live when we saw them a cpl years ago). 5FDP I'm almost uneasy about, the potential to be bad live seems to be there. Shinedown has me worried, I simply don't like the new album & it's heavily featured in their set list, but I'm hoping that the high points will make up for the lulls. Sound of Madness is, after all, a personal theme song.
Chevelle will likely once again prove to me that I'm really just not that into them.
The others I'm just unsure what to expect.

I say good for him, if that is what will make him happy. Personally (read: selfishly), I'm sad because Against Me! is one of my favorite bands, and his voice is so unique and I will miss them.
Here's the lyrics for anyone curious:
Your tells are so obvious.
Shoulders too broad for a girl
Keeps you reminded
Helps you remember where you come from
You want them to notice
The ragged ends of your summer dress
You want them to see you like they see every other girl.
They just see a faggot. They hold their breath not to catch the sick
Washed up on the coast, I wish we could've spent the whole day alone
With you
You've got no cunt in your strut
You've got no hips to shake
You know it's obvious, but we can't choose how we're made

Decided to take a crack at this (since YouTube has been randomly scrambling the order on my playlists lately), not sure whether I'll be able to maintain it or not but time will tell.
40 tracks, all current Active/Hard rock songs. Obviously limited to what's available on Spotify (for my first crack at this there were 7 songs that would have been included that were not on Spotify yet)
And, by way of explanation, this is based significantly but not entirely around the latest Active Rock/Rock charts in both the U.S. and Canada, as well as very occasional entries from the Alternative chart. Basically it's the Top 40 from those, minus the suck :)
For those who follow the genre closely there won't be much here that you haven't heard. Those who follow occasionally (or are just feeling adventurous) might find some things they like that they hadn't come across yet.
My Spotify Top 40 by Jon Loveless on Spotify (http://open.spotify.com/user/1222717671/playlist/675tSNUpWr2gbRP0dhygGq)
edit to add: The 7 missing songs, just for the heck of it ...
Days Gone By - The Offspring
Soldiers - Otherwise
Unspoken - Red Line Chemistry
Let the Sparks Fly - Thousand Foot Krutch
Stone Faith - Colin James
Last Thing - Tupelo Honey
Analog Man - Joe Walsh

The middle to back-half of the year looks pretty strong if you're an indie fan. The Walkmen, Japandroids, Edward Sharpe, Passion Pit, Yeasayer, Dirty Projectors, Sigur Ros, Animal Collective, Beach House, Liars, Hot Chip, Metric, and The Gaslight Anthem.
And these are only the known bands I can think of off the top of my head. Thank God for Spotify, although I'll probably completely forget these bands came out with new albums after like a week, since I'll be completely overwhelmed.
Is it just me, or do you find yourself not following up as much on albums now that you have millions of them at your fingertips?

I think it's more age and too much other stuff to do, but I used to keep up with all that kind of stuff for quite a few artists, and now I just go find stuff when I can - sometimes months after a release since I've simply forgotten about it. There are certain artists I am waiting on a release from, but most - even if I'm interested in hearing it - I simply forget until the next time I decide to sit down and try to find something new to listen to.

I definitely listen to far more full albums, but I find I rarely follow up on ones I like. There's just too much stuff. I also find myself forgetting if I've listened to random albums that I'm pretty sure I've listened to in the past.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'm listening to far more music, but I don't know if I'm as attached to the music I'm listening to as I was in the past. I guess its turned into a quality v. quantity thing for me.

The bigger change in my listening pattern -- not necessarily related to Spotify -- seems to be becoming more & more track oriented vs album oriented. That's more of an iTunes et al influenced thing for me I think,(as well as budgetary concerns) plus digging for new material on YouTube (where individual tracks are obviously much more common than full albums).

Thanks Grover, totally forgot about that album (Heaven) and after hearing it today i think it is positively amazing once more :) Maybe some people will whine about it not being as edgy and angry or as dark as "Lisbon", but i think after an album like that itīs only logical to go that route a little bit and it hasnīt hurt the songs in the least.
Iīve also been meaning to post a song here for ages but allways forgotz, a little gem of a song called "King and Lionheart" by the band Of Monsters And Men
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5AiSrCPvpco" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I dunno, itīs just one of those songs i absolutely canīt stop listening to, literally spent dozens of hours listening to it all year and half an hour just yesterday sitting at the lake and daydreaming to it running on replay.
I also have no clue how the album got to No6 in the US (and no4 over here), almost as inexplicable as Mumford and Sons a while back. I mean, itīs a band from freaking Iceland making basically folk music. Not that itīs not brilliant, it just really surprised me when i read about that.

Of Monsters And Men is one of the few acts on the radio that I have enjoyed. They definitely remind me of some other artists I like as well.
I don't buy near the albums I use to, but I thought Mumford and Sons's last album was legitimately one of the best albums of that year and one of the best albums I have from start to finish with no real throw away parts. I have no idea what potential they have long term but that record was amazing.

I liked a few of the synth songs on the Drive soundtrack and one of the "if you liked this, you might like this" recommendations was the Naked And Famous CD "Passive Me, Aggresive You". What's up with the sudden surge of rock cover tunes?
Godsmack has a big hit with Rocky Mountain Way and Charm City Devils have their breakthrough with Man of Constant Sorrow but there's also:
Love & Death - Whip It
Candlelight Red - She's Got the Look
Eve to Adam - School's Out
XFactor1 - The Stroke *not the single but it provided their Rock chart debut this week anyway
That's a lot of covers in a very short time frame, at least to my recollection of what's usually out there

So, I dunno if this is a common thing or it's a just me thing
The other day Amazon had a ton of albums for .99. At that price point I buy fairly everything I might have a bit of interest in. Then you listen to the tracks and realize "hey, that sounds familiar". And realize the song is the theme song to some commercial(in this case, Bing).
Anyways, this Lumineers album feels like it was worth a dollar.

Father John Misty. This dude was part of Fleet Foxes and when you hear it, that'll make sense. It's so good though. I can't stop listening to it. Seems it's going to supplant Fiona Apple from my "press play and just play all day and all night" album spot.

Had an itch for some Gregory Brothers this afternoon, which led to the discovery of Walk Off The Earth...

Which in turn led to the discovery of Sarah Blackwood...

Which also led to Creepshow...

Today was a good day :)
Walk of the Earth is huge on YouTube - check out their cover of "Somebody that I used to know". I saw them in concert two weeks ago and they were pretty damn good.

That was their breakout video. One of the best straight up covers I have heard.

So tempted to get it early. It's totally holding up to the hype from what I can see.
I'm resisting the urge to spend full price as of now. Seems like most stuff will get a good sale if you wait.

I decided to pick up Channel Orange. Trying to get into the album, which is a bit difficult IMO. Will be interesting to see how it continues to sell over the next few weeks given the lack of a hit single(top song is about 60th on iTunes).

Well the top single is "Thinkin About You" but that song has been out so long that it's come and gone from the charts.
I think the best song is probably "Super Rich Kids" with Earl Sweatshirt. Pink Matter with Andre 3000 is pretty good, too. "Forrest Gump" is "If I weren't already out as bi, it'd be very apparent after this song." but not bad. "Sweet Life" is solid too.
Those are the ones I keep coming back to, especially Super Rich Kids though. One of my tumblr followers (who lives in Nashville) called it "Benny and the Jets for the 21st century." I totally thought that when I heard it the first time too.

Currently downloading Frank Ocean's album as we speak, it's out on iTunes a week early.
"Sweet Life" sounded amazing.
An absolutely amazing album!! Man, "Pyramids" is just jaw dropping.

'Lost' most certainly has an Erotic City type vibe to it.

Grantland did a negative review of it. I can't say the one single I listened to, 45, did much for me.
