In the AFC, I think the gap between the Pats strength (offense) and the Ravens strength (defense) is greater than the gap between their weakness (defense) and the Ravens weakness (offense). Basically, even if the Ravens are able to slow down the Pats today I don't see their offense lighting up the Pats.
In the NFC, the Bay Area has the same feel to it as it did during the SF Giants WS run where nobody thought they would beat ATL, PHI and TEX. I expect this game to go down to the final minutes with the front 7 on defense that performs better will lead their team to victory.

Watching the Pats win will just anger me, so I'm keeping busy until the night game. Can't wait for the one, that should be a great one. Hoping for a Harbaugh bowl in the Super Bowl. A lot of love for Jim in Indiana still.

Even I as a Pats fan was a huge fan of Jim during his Indi days. I'm loving the season he's having pretty much solely because of that.

I'm going to go with my gut and pick the Ravens and Giants. I guess I'm one of the (apparently) few who thinks the Ravens' offense isn't as inept as Houston made it look last week. And I'm not picking against a Giants team on a roll.

My gut says Ravens and Giants, my head says Pats and Niners....(so for the pick em game, I split the difference and picked for who I want to win. :) ).

As for Pats/Ravens.
Pats defense is not nearly as good as it looked against Denver and their offense has been more inconsistent than not all season. I can easily see Baltimore holding the Pats to 20 or less and Baltimore put up north of 20.
I'm really surprised people think the Pats are as good as they are, too be honest.

The Pats defense isn't the Texans defense.

Pats defense looks a little better than it did early in the year. Seems like they got a few players back and some others have settled in. It's not good, but I don't think it's as bad as people might think.
My problem with the Ravens is that they really didn't look that good against Houston. They were blown off the ball on both sides and a semi-competent QB would have had Houston winning that game last week. Their offense is also incredibly predictable. Not saying they won't make it a game, but I'd be taking New England especially with it being in Foxboro.

As I predicted before the season started, I think it'll be Giants/Patriots:
Front Office Football Central - View Single Post - NFL Predictions - 2011 (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showpost.php?p=2512967&postcount=2)
(Of course, I also predicted the Rams would "dominate" the NFC West, that the Bengals would go 1-15, and that the Packers would miss the playoffs - but hey, that super bowl pick is still looking pretty good - as was the pick that the Jets "miss the playoffs as the Rex Ryan act gets a little old").

As for the Giants I am a little worried because so many people seem to like them this week. However, this roll reminds me exactly of the superbowl run a few years back and I just don't trust Alex Smith yet.

Every time I see Gronkowski making that standard 14 yard play against totally overmatched safeties or linebackers, I wonder "how does anyone ever stop this team?" (admittedly, I feel the same thing for Jimmy Graham and a couple other guys to a lesser extent)
I love how football is a game of matchups and adjustments like that. But what manner of player do you invest in if you start facing these 6'6" 265-lb gazelles on a regular basis?

I'm going to guess that a strong 4-man pass rush will help and then some lighter speed LB's.

I think you'd have to start lining up guys to play underneath coverages and making them beat you deep. As far as player type... I have no idea.

But still. If you miss you only give the pats offense 7 yards and by going for it, you're essentially saying your defense will stop them if you don't make it on 4th down. You have to go for the tie IMO there with under 3 minutes left.

It was pretty bad. It almost looked like the offensive line was playing it like a trap to the left, but the run went to the right. That seemed like a strange spot to try a complex running play no matter what. Not exactly the time to get away from a good ol' power running game.

Smart play by Boldin. Instead of just stepping out of bounds, he took advantage of all the space in front of him. I've seen too many receivers thinking "just get out of bounds" instead of finishing the play strong.

What is the "football move"?
A receiver cannot fumble the ball unless they...
1. Make the catch and control the ball
2. Have two feet down
3. And then perform at least one "Football move" such as another step or reflex or something like that...actually, I have no idea how to explain it.
These rules also explain a completed catch as well, I believe.

Add me to the 49ers side. If I have no team left, might as well root for the coach that was a former Colt. Plus, I think they have a real shot at beating the Pats, which is extremely important to me now.

Yeah, seriously, it's not healthy and puzzling too since there's not that much difference between any teams (lots of good guys, lots of bad guys) because it's still the NFL. Yeah, I don't see another dynasty talk about the Pats. Brady's nearing the tail end of his career. This isn't a great defense. Plus, the AFC is the weaker of the two conferences. NFC is much tougher now. That said, the Pats could be prime again next year because which team will make the moves to push them over the top? The AFC contenders are all seriously flawed.

Happy there's one more game to the season. Especially after Brady played the way he did (in his own words: "Like crap."). Gotta have faith that he'll bounce back in 2 weeks.

A healthy Steelers team is always in play. The Texans might continue to build on what they have. Baltimore maybe playing at home this time, and let's be honest, they aren't in the Super Bowl partly due to missing a chip shot of a FG. Those are the only ones I really see happening.

Steelers needs an injection of youth. The Texans are a possibility. A healthy Schaub, and that Ravens games goes the other way. They have the team that has the proper balance to beat the Pats...good offense and defense. So do the Steelers if healthy. They just weren't.
Pats have a HUGE advantage at home and that's in part because their division isn't that great. Pitt and Baltimore have to contend with each other. The Jets, for all their yapping, haven't lived up to that great rival to challenge New England supremacy. Won't happen with Sanchez either...unless you can believe rumors coming from Indy media that if Manning is gone, the leading candidate would be the Jets. That would be interesting. I think Brady is a great QB, don't get me wrong. But he did land in the perfect situation. Belichick, regardless of what I think of him, can coach. If Brady has an asterisk, and it's a small one, but it's the 2008 season when Belichick still got them to 11-5. The Colts organization just couldn't do the same thing (though I don't think Dungy would have waited so long to yank Painter).
Manning may have his random days of suckitude, but you can't blame the Giants up and down year on him. Lack of running game and injuries on D forced him to do a lot more than he wanted at times.

I don't agree. what if that instant was the only thousandth of a second that the ball was in his bands and it passed through? You have to have some sort of criteria for maintaining the possession of the ball after it hits the hands to count as a catch. The football move business is an attempt to do that. I hate the wording of the rule and the associated subjectivity, but I'm honestly not sure what would be better.

Yeah, I'm talking about Peyton. Can't complain about Eli's situation. There's a reason the Polians were ousted after one bad season. It had been a long time coming. Some great picks over the years, but far too many bad ones. Our over reliance on UFAs caught up to them once Manning went down. I guess I just get annoyed when media tries to play up that Brady is significantly better than Manning. I understand there's a personal preference, and I think regardless they have both been great QBs. Maybe I like to play the what if card of what if Manning had better defenses through the years, better rushing attacks after James left, and in some cases, better coaching. It'll just be the GOAT talk that will get to me. I just don't agree with it (and no, I don't think Manning is either).
As for Manning, if he goes, I will always appreciate what he did for football in Indy in general. Before Brady, the Pats at least had some success. The Indy version of the Colts were horrible, save for Captain Comeback's one great year. Without Manning there is no Lucas Oil Stadium and perhaps, no Colts in Indy at all. I'll take the one Super Bowl win and the memories of a second trip. I just hope that my last image of him isn't him throwing his hands up in disgust as Caldwell calls that TO against the Jets. Sadly, I think we have.
FWIW - Any Pats fan that I can think of respects...no...fears Peyton. Dude is absolutely nails. They got in his head there for a while...yeah...but he's scary.
I don't know any actual football fans (as you said, aside from the media who are constantly trying to manufacture stories/controversy to keep their jobs) who argue that Brady is significantly better than Peyton.

It still pisses me off that the Lambeau Leap was grandfathered in. Like...why should the Packers get special treatment? Every team should have 1 grandfathered in celebration. Make it fair. Otherwise it's fucking bullshit.

Excellent point. True Colts fans say the same about Brady. The guy just scares you. Only Brees commands that type of respect from our fan base. And I'll never forget a conversation I had with fellow Colts fans in 2008. We actually missed Brady. No of us were happy when he got hurt that year, even if we don't like them.
Yeah, it's the media that ticks me off. Call me a Midwest homer something the media can never be called.

cuervo, for me, it usually comes down to a player (or two) and/or a coach or owner and thus, not a long term thing.

If a runner breaks the plane of the goal line, he already has possession and he is already a runner. It is an absolutely, completely, utterly different scenario than a player trying to establish possession in the end zone.

Well, it's not like only the Packers are allowed to do it. Any team can. Dunking the ball over the goalpost was grandfathered in, too.
I do, however, think that they should have grandfathered in the Cleveland Browns celebration of dropping to the ground and crying in disbelief that they actually reached the end zone for a change. Sadly, going to the ground in the end zone to celebrate is a penalty. :(

Same with me and Manning this year. It just doesn't feel...right without him out there on the other side of the field. Like it's a hollow win, ya know?
I try to just ignore all the media bullshit...it's so fucking contrived all the time...I just roll my eyes at the shit they say.

I'd agree with this. That goes with likes and dislikes. Liked the Dolphins when Marino was there, couldn't care less about them now. Huge Fouts fan growing up, can't stand Rivers. Heck, I liked Steve Grogan, not a fan of Brady. Some teams are universal. Never liked the Steelers, always kind of liked the Bengals.
CRUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZ. Another example. He saved my fantasy season, so I'm a fan of his!

I'm glad to have witnessed some of the great QBs in the 70s; Montana/Marino/Elway in the 80s-90s; and Brady/Peyton/Brees in the 00s.

I agree. Glad my dad took me to games in that era and I got to see Montana, Marino, and Elway play. Montana was the most impressive, and Marino was the one you just didn't know what was going to happen.

I guess I don't know. I've not totally figured out how to respond to folks hating my own teams or fan bases (like, what is even behind Bucc's hatred of the Eagles or Phillies? They've traditionally never won anything.)
I hear ya, it's tricky how to deal with that, and I know I haven't always responded the perfect way, but I still think the #1 douchebag move in sports fandom is immediately trying to take a fan down after their team wins a big game. That is rampant on FOFC, it does remind me of old times when the Pats were winning, and there was a few prime examples of it here (not from you). When I'm at a party and I meet a Yankee fan, or a Colts fan, it's always a great time, there's good back-and-forth (I confess my fears of Manning, and Jeter, or whoever), I just don't care for it when it gets all mean-spirited like it can here and people are immediately trying to bring you down.

I find it amusing the media talking about Brady's terrible day when he went 22 of 36 for 239 yards and with 2 INTs. I think it's a nod to Tom's greatness when that would be terrible in the days of 6 for 21, 121 yds QBs.

Vernon Davis. Insanely talented, dumb as shit.
Brady himself said he "really sucked" today on the field in an interview that the entire stadium could hear. The crowd chuckled. I don't know if he did that badly, but he at least thought so.

In the 6 seasons prior to this, we've had the f'n Steelers and the Colts in the SB twice and the Pats only once. Thankfully we hadn't had the Jets.
Yeah, I was really hoping to see the Ravens make it this year... and I agree with the Jets not making it.. thank goodness for that!

His two INT's were bad. The first one he shouldn't have thrown against that secondary...and the second was just utterly stupid.
Other than that I thought he was fine frankly. 22/36 isn't steller, but it's not "sucky."
I also think he's pissed they had to settle for all those FGs and didn't punch it in more often on some of those.

Also a dead ball penalty AFTER a first down. Did that used to be first and twenty five, or was that college ball?

I don't mind the Giants' unis outside the super-stretchiness of them, which I think would make anything look like crap.
The Ravens...yeah, I'm not fond of those. The purple jerseys I can take, but the all-black pants aren't good (same goes for the Saints when they wear them).
