I'm excited for this game as always. One thing that has me worried is a preview I read on OS stating that franchise mode didn't get much attention in this iteration. I hope they are simming seasons and checking for somewhat decent free agent decisions (i.e. not having Pujols type players still sitting unsigned well into the season), finances (which often lead to the FA problem), decent trades, etc. Seems like something big comes up every year once you get a few seasons into a career. Still excited and have it preordered.

I'm on the fence. I honestly was unimpressed with the improvements last year and was hoping to see a bit more overhaul on either RTTS or franchise. We'll see if/when this is a purchase for me, but it's no longer a release day priority unfortunately.

That's not to say it's not a great game, I just question (really, more than any other game) if I need to update each year.

RTTS that is what i play the most seems almost the same with little changes besides improved manager AI for what i have been reading at OS.

I'm buying a Vita on release day and will get the show 12 for it... was going to pass on the ps3 version but... this year you can transfer files between the vita and the ps3 and continue your franchises and RTTS between both consoles, so i guess i'll end buying both versions just because that.

Franchise is the only thing this game needs improved upon! How disappointing... I hope that preview is inaccurate

Pretty much agreeing with you guys on the fence. Love the game more than any other sports game, but if all the improvements are better animations and new button controls then I don't know if I want to pay sixty bucks for that.

Here is a link to the preview I was referring to. Particular paragraph is shown below. Hopefully they will get it right.

With so much attention being paid to introducing new game controls and improving the presentation, Sony hasn’t added much new content to Franchise mode this year, opting instead to focus on improving the trade, line-up, and player generation logic. Changes to Road to Show mode are minimal, as well. Rather than starting out as a player who designated hits in a game or comes in for an inning of mop-up relief, your rookie is immediately a starter – “that hot shot rookie who doesn’t sit on the bench,” Villa adds.

What's a Vita?

The new PSP.

It's basically a portable PS3, will be released by the end of February and as it's almost as powerful as a ps3, most of games will be exactly like the PS3 ones and you will be able to transfer and continue your savegames between both consoles.

I played mlb a lot a with the psp because it's portability, but missed some of the Ps3 features and specially didn't like that i had to play different characters or different franchises in each console. Being able to move my RTTS from the PS3 to the Vita is huge for me.

MLB the show 12 in a VITA:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j1mEA5nC4yQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I have also seen FIFA12 in the Vita and it's exactly like the Ps3 version, maybe we should start a thread about the VITA.

One really good result that I see coming from the PS3-Vita integration is that you're going to see much better integration between the two development teams and their products. Ideally, that should lead to better logic bug catches when working with integrated products.

i'll probably skip this one...i have 11 and i don't see much reason for me to spend $60 on.Franchise and RTTS were my biggest hopes, but they havent really been touched. 11 is still a fun game, and i have some good games going on with it. I might pick it up if i can get it for the same price i got 11 (around $35)

Yeah - I never got deep enough into 11 to make 12 a release-day purchase...but I'll probably try to pick up a used/sale copy later in the year I think.

So it looks like I'm eating my words from this thread. I apparently won a PS Vita through the current Taco Bell promotion and, as part of the package, I'll also be receiving MLB The Show 12. Given the transfer support from the PS3 to the Vita, I'll now likely be picking this up so I can run the game on both systems.

This'll be my first handheld system since the original Gameboy so I'm not quite sure what to expect.

I played FIFA in a vita yesterday in a shopping center and was amazed on how big upgrade it is with the PSP, mainly because the two sticks, that was what i missed the most in the PSP to give the full PS3 handheld experience. The screen is gorgeous too.

Very true. I'll probably be bugging you though to see what games you like so I can load up for when I get it.

Well, according to GameStop, here's the full list of retail titles available for Vita through March 6:

Little Deviants
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Hot Shots Golf World Invitational
Wipeout 2048
ModNation Racers
F1 2011
FIFA Soccer
BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend
Lumines Electronic Symphony
Rayman Origins
Dungeon Hunter Alliance
Michael Jackson: the Experience
Asphalt: Injection
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
BEN 10 Galactic Racing
Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen
Touch My Katamari
Army Corps of Hell
Dynasty Warriors Next
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus
Lego Harry Potter 5-7
Unit 13
MLB 12: the Show

Of those, the ones that stand out to me besides MLB 12 as being more than just 'let's port this console game to the handheld' are Touch My Katamari, Wipeout (since you can play the Vita Wipeout online against owners of the PS3 Wipeout!), Lumines and Uncharted. Rayman may also be worth picking up just because it's that excellent.

Of the others, the only one I would actively say "don't bother" on is ModNation Racers. The PS3 and PSP versions were excellent. The Vita version removed online play. Of all the pointless...

Thanks for the list SackAttack!

My pack, which is the First Edition Bundle, I guess, has Little Deviants and MLB 12: The Show (I could've had Little Big Planet or Mod Nation instead).

I would like to get a decent first-person shooter for the Vita and the Dungeon Hunter Alliance game sounds interesting. Otherwise, I'll have to pick through that list to see what sounds good. It has totally changed my excitement level of The Show now though because I do see some decent value in playing on the hand held and then at home.

Honestly MLB 12 the Show was the best choice there. ModNation has no online play, as I said, which makes it the most pointless game ever.

LittleBIGPlanet is fun and all, and I'm curious to see how it plays on Vita, but between LBP and MLB 12, MLB 12 all the way.

If anyone has a PS Vita to go along with the PS3, Best Buy and I believe GameStop are selling both games together for $80 next week.

I traded in some old games at Best Buy today as they were doing an extra 50% credit on trade-in's towards The Show preorder. I got $80 even. Works for me.

I had been leaning heavily on just getting it for the Vita. That allows me to spend time with the wife when she's watching her shows. That said, $80 for both is a pretty good deal. Dropping $20 off the overall package is tempting to me.

after seeing the impressions and the videos, think i might preorder this today from Best Buy. They have a deal where you can trade in games toward it and get 50% more trade-in value if you put it toward a preorder of it. With the 3 games i'm going to trade in, it should only cost me $15. The deal ends today(3/3)

Unlikely. Many GameStops are mall locations, and those are tougher to do midnight events for. My guess is any GameStop that's a standalone location (can open independently without jeopardizing adjacent businesses) will probably be open. Indoor mall locations...probably not.

first game won 3-1. Hit a pinch-hit 3 run double with Thome in the 8th. I like the changes to to the presentation during the game, feels better. Also saw a bunch of hits i never saw before.

Also, the loading times are much better if you install with the 10gig option. So far so good!

edit: Only thing i didnt like was they seemed to have removed the box that shows all the pitchers in the at bat. It does show up after every pitch, but now i can't press L3 and have it show where all the pitches in the at bat were. I thought that was useful to show how he was pitching me and guessing where the next pitch would be.

Pulse pitching is the greatest pitching mechanism yet... wow.. lots of fun.

First game (on veteran since I'm a rookie) lost to the Braves 7-2 but it was great.

Had trouble picking up the ball in a bright, sunny, 91 degree day game in Busch.

Analog hitting is great too.. best looking sports game ever to grace a console with the new live broadcast, the camera angle shots are nothing short of watching a game on TV.

My daughter comes in and says, "Baseball started today?" and sat down.. took her about 3-4 mins to realize I was playing a game.. lol...

Update 1.01 out on the Vita version. I just uploaded a RTTS save to the Cloud. Going to install on PS3 to see how that goes. The upload was fast and easy. Also, load times on Vita for each game are WAY better than any of the PSP versions. Don't feel like it's too bad at all.

Yes. Did it last night. Was really easy to do. They have a 'load' and 'load from cloud' option on each system where you just bring up your save and you're ready to go. Only thing needed to set up the cloud system is to redeem the online pass codes on both versions of the game. Very simple after that.

ok, i officially suck at hitting at this game. I have it on All-Star using Zone with pitch speed to 0...and i still can't hit. Well i can get singles here and there, but i strike out too much and never get the big hit. I find getting the hitting-difficulty right to be by far my biggest problem with the last 2 versions of this game, and the thing that stops me from playing long careers and makes me hesitate to purchase.

It's either too hard and I am like Qrusher, or it's too easy and I'm bombing balls out too frequently.

yeah, last year i played on Veteran, but wanted to try it out on All-Star. I think i gotta change the view(i'm on Catcher), cause i can't seem to recognize low changes or high fastballs lol. And then when i get a hanger, i'm on late on it.

I also ran into a bug when Chase Utley got injured after swinging and i had to bring in a replacement. After i did, i lost the commentary for the rest of the game. It was kind of eerie playing without it lol

Analog hitting - you do not need to press any buttons to swing power/contact/normal, at least I can't find anything in the controls or in the tutorial that says anything about that.. which is great, btw.

Played another game tonight vs Anaheim and let me just say this game is baseball nirvana. I practiced with analog hitting and along with Pulse Pitching, it's like you have total control over your actions and it pairs that with the abilities of the players.

Final
STL - 4R 11H 1E
LAA - 2R 5H 1E

From start to finish, there was nothing and I mean nothing that had me say anything except for, "Did that just happen?". I hit my first HR against CJ Wilson with Berkman and took a 2 run lead in the first inning. Carpenter was his normal self, giving up 2 runs in the bottom of the first innning and then went on to pitch 8 innings, striking out 8 Angles. Brought Motte in to close the game out and with pulse pitching, you can tell the difference with a tired Carpenter vs a rested Motte.

This game plays a game of baseball better than anything ever programmed, nothing even comes close. Bunting is even a blast with analog hitting. Hitting variety, ball physics? I saw singles, doubles, a triple, 2 HR's, a nubber down the line for a single, a wicked opposite hit that tailed away into the corner. I still think I haven't seen the same hit twice.

I found some options I turned on to see foul balls and HR celebrations, so I can't wait to see one of those after a big HR (I found that setting after my 2 HR's).

It's just a complete package, nothing feels added in just for adding it in.. and the game is beautiful in 1080p. Just the way the views change during the game on broadcast is a thing of beauty and playing a night game as the sun sets in Anaheim was surreal.

Pujols was 1-3 with a walk and I was stressing out everytime he came up to bat. :)

So far, veteran feels perfect.. but I assume as I play more the next step will be all star.

Just played a great game. I had Roy Halladay going against the padres and he pitched good until the 7th. John Mayberry hit a big 3-run double that gave us a 3-1 lead in the 6th.

I left in Halladay for too long and he gave up a lead off walk in the 7th followed a single. The next guy bunted it back to Halladay who promptly threw it into the stands. After the error, it was now a 4-2 game(in my favor) with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no out.

I brought in Brian Sanchez who got the next guy to pop out, but then let up a single to make it a 4-3 game with runners on first and 3rd. Then Jason Bartlett does a suicide squeeze and they tie the game at 4 :(

In the 8th, Utley gets on and then Jimmy Rollins brings him home with a RBI double to take the lead. I bring in Papelbon in the 9th, but he walks the first hitter(Orlando Hudson). Then with 2 out and Hudson at 2nd, Maybin lines a single to center and...

I really want to try and enjoy this game but I just can't win a game if I tried.

I can't bat, can't pitch, can't field.

The game may be realistic but it's learning curve is through the roof. Giving 2k12 a go this year me thinks.

From a Show n00b, I think pulse pitching, analog hitting and fielding are very easy to learn. :) Hitting is tough though.. but very rewarding!

I changed the camera view to Catcher-Classic and have had much better success.

I have the setting on all star - zone hitting, but was really struggling with identifying balls/strikes. Classic view gave me almost instant improvements. YMMV

Lower pitch speed to zero so you have more time to read pitches and don't think that is cheating big time, it's still fast and challenging enough.

I'll consider that. I put up runs, just not a bunch. I simmed most of a season with the Reds and have played all of the post season. Beat the Phillies 3-1, and am tied with the Marlins 1-1. Beat big time Roy twice.

Although, that is mostly due to pitching. Threw a 1 hit shutout once with Latos, a 5 hit shutout with him (both against Halladay). I got 2 and 1 run(s) respectively on Halladay. I then put up seven against the Marlins and Nolasco.

I think I'm starting to find my grove with a good balance between realism/fun. I MAY make pitching a little bit more difficult for myself. Although, I do strike out quite a bit. When I'm facing an elite pitcher I will probably strike out 10+ against that pitcher, and 50/50 it will end up being 15+ by the end of the game. I may just give hitting more time and practice before I make any changes, though.

Played my first RttS game on Vita last night. Definitely an improvement, so far, over RttS in MLB 10.

I think the game might have some difficulty determining hit types. I hit a double in the 3rd that the game apparently decided was a two-base error, even though nobody touched it before it hit the ground (so at worst it should have been a single and an error). The data overlay decided it was a flyout my next time up, and the hitting report at the end of the game decided it was an error. Conflict resolution is your friend, guys.

yeah its wierd, i went back to MVP 2005 today and i could read the pitches much better...don't know why, i could just time them better. It could be because the ball is bigger than in the Show.

I play with Zone hitting on, but might try Analog.

I'm a veteran of this game and one thing that has REALLY helped me a lot this year in reading pitches is not using any of the guess pitches or guess zones features. It's forced me to be more patient at the plate and watch for speed and break more. Good pitchers still give me fits, but I'm far better at reading speed and timing better. I don't use any of the zone hitting mechanics. I guess I'm too old, but it's just not fun for me to move both hands all over the place to hit a ball. Just let me hit the x button and time it right. Let the game use the players stats as the guide for how well the ball is hit and I'm ok.

I've now played five games. Analog plus zone is just too much for me to hit. At 35, my better days might be gone. So I stick with analog hitting. I never try and guess location. Strictly guess pitches.

Pitching wise, I think pulse pitching is a great concept but I suck at it. I played a bit to start and trailed 14-0 despite having only given up six hits.

It's a great game but I'm starting to wonder if I might finally be too old for video games. I play it and enjoy it but it's not something I feel calling to me non-stop.

well, i think i've given up on this game for the time being, i can't hit at all. I just lost a 19 inning game, striking out 21 times. Also, I had one HR called a double even though replays showed it went over the wall and then another HR caught where the CPU climbed way over the fence and caught it. Then i let up a 2-run single to the pitcher to lose it. It's just not fun anymore. I'll go back to MVP 2005. It's just no fun always losing.

Interesting. I've purchased every MLB the Show since '08 and I've been most successful in this version drawing walks and being able to hit without touching any sliders. Typically, I need to see pitch speed all the way to zero but haven't had to do anything at all and I'm still able to hit the ball.

Lost to Detroit, 6-2 but it was a fun game. There are so many nice little touches in this game. Saw the Tigers relief pitcher drop his glove when he reached the mound, had to bend over while the manager was trying to talk to him to pick it up. :)

Here's my concern, which I wasn't able to tell from the demo.

In the past 2 versions, I've been a "One button hit" and analog pitch guy. I feel like I can pitch realistically with analog, and hit realistically with one-button. However, even with the one-button hit the past two years I've found that in order to get line-drive base-hits I've had to use only the power-swing button, which means I can't check swing at all.

Has this been fixed at all? Can I one-button hit using the normal swing button and get actual solid enough contact to get balls out of the infield that aren't weak pop-flies (and no I don't mean HRs).

Any thoughts?

I've never had that problem. I've always used one button hitting and have went exclusive to the normal "x" 95% of the time. (I will only go power if I'm ahead in the count and get a heater down the middle, I'll only go contact if it's 2 strikes and a critical situation where I have to make contact. Both very rare)

Right now I'm playing as a power hitting 1B. All Star, one button hitting. I'm leading my Double A league in HR and doubles and hitting over .300. I have yet to use power or contact only swings in the game. (my contact is still low in RTTS mode, if your contact is low, you aren't using the power button unless you want pop ups.)

Last game I hit a 430 foot bomb to RF (as a LH hitter) using only the standard button.

Some things to check:

1) make sure the settings are right. If you have zone on at all, you'll get plenty of weak contact just by hitting the standard button.

2) Press the button all the way through the swing. Sounds stupid, but sometimes I get in the habit of taking my finger off too soon, it screws up the swing. (kind of like a check swing)

Hitting is on Rookie difficulty and timing. I am that bad indeed. Maybe I just need to jack my "human contact" wayyyyyy up or something?

Actually...seem to be getting better contact by holding the button down longer. Maybe I was releasing it too early or something.

That's been my experience as well. I've gone a whole season without using the power button and hit 30 HR's. Not sure I could have hit many more using the power button just because the accuracy decreases and I often make much worse hits than if I just would have stuck with the normal swing button.

In past years, there was some RTTS or franchise bugs that detracted from the experience depending on which one you play. I've seen the occasional gameplay glitch (SackAttack sent me a message about a couple he saw), but I haven't seen the big bugs that have hindered the last couple of iterations.

I will say that the option to move the career mode between the Vita and the PS3 is a HUGE addition for me. I use it all the time and the transfer is very easy to use. I think it's also good because it requires lots of interaction between the console and portable development teams, which I would think assists in catching more issues. Really hopeful that some other sports franchises do the same thing, but I won't hold my breath.

Opening day.. vs the Marlins.

Cool to see the new stadium hopping.. fish tank behind home is pretty neat. Had "Opening Day" on the field, nice touch.

Josh Johnson was not nice, pitching a 1 hitter. The only hit I had was a double by Holliday, although I only struck out 8 times http://forums.digitalsportspage.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif Carp was great except for one inning when he allowed 3 runs in the 4th. The other run came on an error and Reyes stole third and I was so caught off guard, I threw the ball to 1st base. DOH!

I had to look at the Cardinals real schedule, I didn't know they played Miami for just one game and then off to Milwaukee. We get Zach Greinke next, UGH!

This is also the first game where the crowd really reacts realistically, they were on their feet for the last out and really loud. I also love to go into a replay and just take a look at all the working scoreboards and what not.

I picked up Ross Gload to backup Berkman at first base and will give the CPU a few weeks to pick from FA before I see if I have any more needs. Playing on AS defaults for everything is going to either land me in last place or allow me to learn the game. The only walk I drew was with Carpenter batting, but I wasn't swinging at anything. http://forums.digitalsportspage.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

The only thing about pitching from the broadcast camera or any camera behind the pitcher is on balls hit to the IF, I get a late start even on "assist" and have never been able to dive for a ball, although I'm hitting the right stick down.

Seems like this game is all I'm going to need for the next few months - in no way am I even remotely bored, in fact I might play another game later tonight.

just started playing this and the franchise mode.

The gameplay is awesome and much better than mlb2k12.

Issues - that its very hard to trade and it doesn't have "trade finder" or "player finder". Fiddling with the 40 man roster isn't that fluid or easy to finagle. Also, I find that the talent influx is kinda lacking. I simmed 11 years before even playing around with the game. Alot of good/great players retired early and then middle-talented players stuck around too long. I was just hard pressed to find enough talent to fill out by 25 man roster.

But the gameplay is awesome.

Maybe there's a way around some of my issues? This was only the first night I really played.
