View Full Version : A Solecismic Kickstarter?

I'm sure most everyone here is familiar with Kickstarter.

I know it was brought up in the video game thread, but yesterday a developer raised over $1-million in ONE DAY to fund their next game. Which obviously made me think about FOF.

In no way do I want to pressure Jim to make a new game. It would be pretty shitty to fund something that Jim has no desire to do.

But is there any doubt that people on this site would gladly contribute to a Solecismic Kickstarter? Does anyone diplomatically want to broach the subject with Jim?

Again, not trying to pressure him. But it seems to me like it's worth discussing amongst ourselves here. A system to donate to the cause is clearly in place, if he wants it.

If he needed the money, we'd have had a new game by now, wouldn't we? Or was it mentioned somewhere that he's working full-time again and I missed it? I didn't think cash was the reason we didn't have a new FOF, updated TCY, baseball game, or curling sim.

lets not be naive. most things are about money. if he doesn't want to make the game, that's one thing. but if this site raises, say, a few hundred thousand, plus sales of the game...you never know what people are looking for in business.

My running assumption is that Jim bet the right side of the housing bubble and made several hundred percent ROI.

How long has it been since the last product by Jim?

If he wanted to make another game, he would have by now.

Jim is busy working on a tennis sim where every serve gets returned.

I heard he was working on a sim based on youth sports today. There is no keeping score and everyone gets a trophy in the end.

I heard he was working on text simulation of text simmer. You design your text sim player, decide which text sims they play, and see if they can create a dynasty that will win a Golden Scribe.

The beauty of Kickstarter is that it's people who are passionate about their craft seeking out contributors to make that dream happen.

I think too many components of that are missing here to make this a viable possibility.

Even if Jim isn't interested in doing something like Kickstarter, you can bet there are tons of small developers watching what went on the other day and hurrying to launch their own games the same way. And why not? It's a great way to fund a project as long as the interest is there.

This thread just makes me sad...

I would give a lot of money for a TCY2... a lot. Probably more than I should.

I heard Jim was making a sim of a football simulation game forum. Basically you sim and then read posts about when the sim simulations when the next sim game is going to be created.

Anyone still in contact with Jim at all, Ben?

Right, I hope one of them makes a text sim that we can support and play. That was my point.

He still posts here regularly. I saw one from him the other day in the Summer Glau thread.

Oh ok.. well I guess he's content right now. :)

Maybe he's hard at work on another sim?

Perhaps instead of kickstarting Jim we can raise money to buy the game's code from him. Then we can release the source code to the community and have a dozen folks working on mods/updates to FOF2k7.

What's your price, Jim?

Raise me a million dollars, and I'll happily sit down and figure out how to build you all a new football simulator ;)
