View Full Version : Men's Watch Recommendations?

Yes, I am asking about both a grill and a men's watch. The watch is for me.
I have never been a "bling" wearer and I never will (comfortably at least), but a watch seems to be a fairly useful accessory that can also be a good addition style wise for special occasions.
I have the plastic/rubber digitals (i.e. normal athletic wear watches); that's not what I am looking for.
I am looking for a nice looking watch, the kind you'll wear with a suit or a dress up night. It really is to be more of a show piece. I don't generally wear watches and I use my phone to see what time it is. So the important thing is that it look nice, and at least will tell me the time when I look at it. I don't need GPS transponders or heart rate monitors or anything like that.
So if I am looking for a watch for under, let's say $100 (and let me know if that's too limiting, Lord I hope not), what brand would you all recommend? What style or type? Anything else I need to consider?
Thanks!

Oh, and I would go with traditional timekeeping, hands on a clock face--no digital, although if I am missing the boat doing that, someone let me know.

you aren't going to wow the rolex watch fetishist world in the $100 range for sure, but I have a ~$100 fossil watch that will serve the purpose you're looking for 90% of the time. Plus they replaced a busted metal band... with a new watch free, sans receipt about 5 years after purchase. So, the good customer service earns them some props alone. You defintely don't want digital for a dress watch.

Fossil is the way to go in that price range.

I'm a big fan of the Timex Weekender series, which is available at Target for around $40 and looks great.

Invicta watches are my favorites...and you can get some for decent pricing on http://www.invictashark.com or http://www.chronoshark.com
You also have to know that there are basically two subsets of Invicta watches. Cheap ones made in Mexico and the ones made in Switzerland...obviously the sub $100 and $200 ones are typically the ones made in Mexico. I have had a few problems with 2 watches I picked up in that price range, but they cost me a whopping $10 to fix (Band issues)

Skagen Denmark - Men Watches (http://www.skagen.com/en-US/products/Men/Watch/All/1.fx)
If you look hard enough you can find Skagen watches on sale for under $100. Can't speak for the long-term quality of them since I've only owned mine for a few months but they seem solidly built and get plenty of good reviews

I've had a Citizen Eco-Drive for the last 3-4 years that has done well for me. It's a square-faced, stainless steel model and has gotten compliments from people over the years.
The price may be over $100. Don't remember what I paid for this one, but it was in that area.

Do NOT get the titanium mesh band. They unravel, and you're left with a bunch of tiny little stabby points of metal on your wrist.
The first one I had started doing that to me within like 3 weeks, got it replaced, and the second did the same thing (took a little longer, but same deal).
I like the watches, but just stay the hell away from that particular band.

I picked one up when I was in China a little over a year ago, a "replica" Patek Phillipe. It is still going strong, and has fooled quite a few people.

I bought a knock off Omega from Canal St in NY, cost me $65, it fooled a couple of the jeweler's here in Buffalo, but when I finally got to one that knew it, he said it was the best replica he has ever seen and he would have offered me a ton of money for the watch, if it wasn't for the one minor slip up (pattern on the back of the watch).

New Egg also has a large selection as well. I picked up a Bulova watch that I liked for just under a $100 and the Invicta's that Macro pointed out are right in that same vein that I would shoot for too.

On the other hand, I love the mesh bands. I've had my Skagen for 5 years and my wife is on her second in around 15 years. They're lightweight, unlike pretty much any other guy's watch out there. My wrist was starting to hurt with heavier and larger watches but this works great.
I have the standard black face with titanium band but I'm considering this one eventually:

I have no idea what the prices are like in the US, but I have always liked Tissot's lower end watches.
My dressy watch is an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, but the watch I wear at work is usually a Tissot PR50.
You should find out what size of face you need. Most mens watches are getting bigger and bigger, but as I have fairly small wrists my Tissot is 36mm and the Omega 38mm. Anything larger than 40mm is too large for my wrist.
