Was really underwhelmed with the first episode. The fact that one of the more interesting characters is gone hurts too.
Chelsea will be easy to root for, Matt will be easy to root against.
The gay guy is the new Cochran, a pawn.

Not impressed with how it started out. The one that is gone may have ended up being my favorite if she stayed. She seemed down to earth and cute as hell.
That gay guy HAS to go. Does he even understand how moronic he sounds? He must be playing it up for air time. So what if you have the idol right now, that saves you for one vote. On the next vote you are gone.

dola: If you wrote a script that had a gay guy that acts like he did there would be complaints about stereotyping. I know several men who are gay and not one of them run like that.

BTW VERY VERY happy that there is NO Redemption Island, NO past contestants, NO ONE from the freakin Hantz family.
I usually am against hidden immunity idols too but that's usually because they make the whole game about idols.
It'll be great to see Coulton actually use one the right way. (If he gets to)
But getting rid of one of the big guys will keep him 3 more days and that could really change things for him. Yeah I know EF you think he's gone the following council. Well maybe not. In 3 days anything can happen. And maybe by that point he'll be able to make an alliance with the older guys and the little guy.

Colton's only hope is that they mix the tribes up right away. Which, based on what happened with previous seasons, is actually a pretty good bet.

I was actually both surprised and impressed that Jeff stopped the action in the challenge immediately once he saw Courtney was really hurt. Past seasons seemed to show a more violent trend in challenges with them just letting people get hurt and tough through it, especially in the more obviously dangerous ones.

true. :) But never underestimate the complete joy of taking someone down with you as you go.
you're probably right that he's going to get led to the slaughter quickly especially if any of the commercials are true about his isolating himself from the group, which is why this'll be fun to see him drag Matt with him right before he gets ousted. (Unless they somehow split their votes so much that his vote is cancelled out (which they aren't going to do at this point) or else just a total randomness of the male vote across the board.) It also depends on if he blabs that he has the idol stupidly or if sab blabs. I think Coulton is too smart to do that. Sab however, I would think she is too but it just might come up. Wait no, if she tells anyone, they'll get all pissed at her for not revealing it to the group to let them decide.

I thought it was an OK opening episode. I too am sad the tattoo girl went home early, I liked her.
I thought it weas really dumb to give the idol to the gay guy when she could have given it to someone who was likely going to be there a while and she could have something to build on come merge time.

*shrug* Coulton's only problem is that he's a kid. He's just an insecure kid who wants to hang out. That actually describes about 90% of the youngins that have been on that show.
I thought it was very smart that he realized right away that they were going to vote him out so he may as well try and hook up with the girls and it actually worked. He got the idol from them. Then he outstayed his welcome. And this is what ELSE I think the girls did wrong. You have this insecure kid who WANTS to be your friend and tell you everything and you tell him to go away? Shit no! You don't do that . YOu say "Sure Coulton! Stay and be our friend and tell us everything about your tribe and help us beat them". And then they would ahve had some leverage and then get rid of him later. THey had a willing puppet and they just sent it away.
I actually really liked Coulton's conversation with Troyzan and the other 2 (forget who) . He absolutely recognized the right people to tell about the idol. My worry is something will go wrong but I do hope he gets to play his idol. I've never actually seen someone out and out use the idol like this before.
He does need to stop treating this like camp though...and I think he might be waking up in that regard.

How did they possibly lose that challenge with such a huge lead? The women were lost on that course.
The tribal once again showed that Coulton doesn't have the concept of strategy quite there yet. "My friends at home are all girls"

Colton is incredibly annoying and totally lucked into the idol, but he made the right moves in setting up the alliance, bringing one of the frat boys on board, and bouncing Matt instead of Bill. Very different than the girls who made a dopey alliance on the walk to camp and stuck with it even though it would have made more sense to bounce Cat and keep the cop.

It seems like a few seasons ago, somebody in casting flipped the switch on casting genuinely malignant assholes versus the roguish jackass fun villain types we used to see (i.e. Boston Rob, Jerri, etc). - A cranky old man who wants everyone to stop saying there's such a thing as racism? check
- Colton? check (sorry, he's become a category of his own)
- Entire thing builds up to a suspenesful vote that turns out not to be suspenseful at all? check

Of course, sometimes you also get a Russel situation where it means that you're just going to be the main character for every week of the entire season. God help us.

The editors' attitudes when starting to put this season together could have been amongst these:
(1) This guy is the most horribly nightmarish racist prick that's ever been on the show. We like villains but we way overreached with this idiot. Fortunately he has a glorious, massive come-uppance blindside fairly early on, so let's just get all his shit on the table in the first few episodes to set it up.
(2) This guy is great TV! People will love to hate him! Let's make him this season's star!
(3) This guy wins, so we need to hide his racist prickishness as much as possible so the public doesn't burn CBS down after the finale.
Option 3 is obviously out. I'm just hoping like hell they're not so clueless than it's option 2.

I don't see why you think this is coming. Alicia is a total bitch who has a rod stuck up her butt against CHristina when she SHOULD be working WITH her. I totally expected an all out war between ALicia and Coulton. Very surprising that all alicia did was kiss his ass and badmouth everyone else.
Jonas is playing the sandra like game of "as long as it's not me" so I don't expect him to do anything. Lief....jeez. They JUST threatened to vote him off and he's still submissive. He's just scared now and won't seem to do anything. Tarzan is...ugh.
Christina is so fucked. However with Alicia telling COlton how much she hates C, Coulton knows that keeping Christina is better than keeping Alicia alliancewise. It certainly seems like he is content with getting rid of the girls and keeping his alliance especially now that they are following his lead.

halfway thru I was dreading another Russel-like season. Remember Russell's first season? When the OTHER Russell was evaced. THere was a commercial before the ep about someone leaving and you heard "Russell can you hear me?" I SOOOO hoped Hantz was leaving the game at that point. Not since then have I felt so happy for someone I thought was leaving.
This show is just stocked full of morons.
Tarzan is the poster child for why old people should get voted off first. What was his deal? He was being as nasty as Alicia and Colton. He enjoys people that are horrible?

I loved that. That meant Alicia doesn't get it. She of course immediately turned on him "Spoiled brat". Her and Tarzan are at this point the worst people to have an alliance with.
Really I totally am a big Christina fan now. She fricking saved that kid's life. If he was left in the middle of the woods, he might have died. The cameraman wouldn't have done a thing about it either.

Yay! Jonas gets balls AND a brain! Pleasepleaseplease Leif! Start thinking for yourself! See that Jonas is a good ally and you should actually stay with him and Christina. Really it is odd what's going to happen now. The alliance of Kim-Alicia-Jay-Troyzan need to find a fifth IMMEDIATELY.
I love it that people are sick of Tarzan's BS. Their original alliance is down to 4 people that can't think for themselves. Jonas-Leif-Tarzan-Troyzan. That's totally weak and I think Troyzan is definitely going to stay with the girls. They MIGHT bring Mike in. They MIGHT bring um...Sabrina or JOnas in. Alicia is going to run back to the girls. I hope Christina spills the beans about her and the ousting of MOnica.

Saw a "Secret Scene" from last night's episode wherein Colton and Alicia are privately mocking Christina with "slanty eyes" and laughing.

Didn't Jeff say at one point they were gonna get the Idol? Or maybe he just asked about the idol. I dunno. In any event, I'm surprised that when they showed up to tribal and saw the Colton was gone, nobody from the other team asked who beat the crap out of him.
The reason it's hard for me to enjoy this season is not just Colton, but that nobody has stood up to him, and worse, they seem to be making excuses for or following him blindly. They've all seen the way he treats people and not one of those fuckers stood up to him. No matter what happens from this point out, they wont redeem themselves to me.
I guess my rooting interests are down to the asian or the black girl but not so much so that I'm excited to watch or root for them. I kind of wish they would all get appendicitis actually.
And for fans of Survivor who are glad the asshole is gone, enjoy the rest of the season, cause I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts he's back next year in some sort of blank vs blank or specialty game.

It's a stone cold lock. I envision Colton's tearful remorse at the reunion show, which will actually be calculated to ensure casting on a future season for a "redemption arc."
As has been noted several times on Rob Cesternino's podcast, this is exactly the sort of thing Russell needs to make a serious run at it in a future season. A few seasons need to go by, another few notorious assholes pass through the game, and you put the Coltons of the world on a tribe with Russell and suddenly nobody's going to even be paying attention to Russell.

Speaking of editing. When Christina was rubbing his temples during his headache/stomache ache, he was giving voxpops in a clean green shirt somewhere in the jugnle and he looked chipper as could be. And again when he was on the ground they intercut with talking heads of him. Makes me think that ALL of those were filmed in LA on a "Jungle" set. Wow a split, then a merge at the top 12. That certainly IS a twist and I'm surprised they haven't done it sooner. Like it a lot. For sure makes the ousting of Bill an even stupider move.
I'm thinking back before the split. Alicia was going to possibly be voted off by her own alliance for her attitude. Jonas already doesn't like her and obviously Christina doesn't either. 'm just really hoping that she becomes a man without a planet. Obviously she won't stop badmouthing people and lying about them. Just hate it when people make this game that personal. Tarzan is also starting to do that. Talking badly about someone just because they aren't in your alliance.
I'm probably in the minority but I don't think they would have Colton back given the backlash about him.
Even is he does come back in a reuinon show I think people who have played before won't put up with him and he would be gone quickly.
I totally agree. They haven't really ever invited someone back that left that early, especially if they left for medical reasons. Mike Skupin (season 2 falling in the fire), Ed (intestinal blockage season ?), Jonathan (Fans vs Favs, hole in leg...well that was already an allstar show), The "Other Russell" (Exhaustion and passing out) Is that it? Didn't someone break a bone at one point?

Fairplay's Allstar appearance was absolutely boring. Pfff! He wasn't evil at all. That was the problem. He actually told the others in camp and in tribal to go ahead and vote him off because he didn't care about the game anymore since he and his wife just had a baby. I thought it might be some kind of weird scheme but no...they all voted him off and he was happy to go. Just like that. So boring in fact was his appearance that Burnett hasn't brought him back since especially for the "Heroes vs villains" season.
As far as his first appearance....really I d id not find him evil at all. In fact he was one of the few people that season to actually be PLAYING. I found Rupert so boring and childish yet everyone loved him. It was actually cool that he managed to vote him off. Yeah I do agree that he was kind of playing a character. I agree with you 100% there. All of his evil moments were off camera, he was leading all the contestants to believe one thing, and then in his interviews he'd be laughing and letting us know that he was playing them all.

There are so many more threats/dislakable people they want to vote off ahead of him.
They had no hope for a guys alliance anymore. Jay and MIke can't stand the rest. I have no idea why Troyzan was telling Jonas/Tarzan/Leif stuff. Perhaps leaving his options open. I dislike the idea of an all-girl thing.

Doesn't make sense to vote Jonas off there. I know there isn't a guys alliance, but the guys making the call there needed to realize they have to keep numbers in their favor. I agree with the last part, but disagree somewhat with the first part. Colton did get the immunity idol from Sabrina. He also manipulated his whole tribe into going into tribal council when they won. While I detest the sight of him, his bias towards others, and the general piece of shit that he is, I also have to say that from an unbiased point of view, he made shit happen that he wanted to happen. If that's not a mastermind (albeit with weak players), then I don't know what is.

Agree here. Coulton seemed to just have a lot of Charisma and the ability to make a decision and make up his mind and talk people forcefully into it. aka a bully.
He never had a master plan. If he did he wouldn't have been stupid enough to weaken the guys an extra member. Although he kept saying he was going to jump in with the girls during the merge but that never would have worked. A totally foolish idea.
It is sad that people aren't making good decisions even when they know what's happening. Christina definitely could have called Alicia out to Jonas AND Sabrina for jumping in with the guys and playing both sides. Alicia is still a broken record of getting rid of Christina when she really doesn't have an alliance. Tarzan is selfishly playing his own game. Somehow Coulton cast a spell on him to follow his orders even after his death in the game. He absolutely thinks the best of Coulton and ALicia, even when they are on the surface horrible people.

I disagree that Tarzan or Alicia would have been better targets this round. Neither of those younger guys on the stronger mixed tribe had any allegiance to the other guys (aside from maybe Troyzan). I was hoping that Troyzan would have come to his senses once Jay told him about the women wanting to vote out Mike. That should have made him realize that the women are voting off the men. Now even if the men stick togther (and who knows what Tarzan will ever do) the best they can get is a tie if the pull Christina.
Someone really needs to make Christina feel like she is in a safe alliance with them and make a move. I don't think that anyone left is smart enough to do that.

I think that was a dumb move by the Kim, Chelsea, and Sabrina alliance. It was a couple of votes to early to vote out Mike. You voted out someone who felt he was in their alliance which would be okay except it probably burned their bridges with both Troyzan and Jay. Leif and Tarzan have no loyalties to that 3 girl group. Then you add in Christina who knows she the 6th girl (who could probably jump to third in that alliance) and suddenly it's a 5-5 game with an idol Kim and company don't have accounted for. It may not burn them but it was a dumb move because the longer the alliances were blurred the better for them. They aren't blurred anymore and there are still ten people left. They were in control of the game and now everyone should know it.

I mean Jay c'mon Chelsea stupidly tells the women of the other tribe that she wants to vote out Mike right in front of you, and you still vote for him when you needed to keep him around more than ever? Yeah Troyzan I'm looking at you for just blindly believing Kim without even thinking she might be pulling one over on you?
Kim deserves to win right now-first for coming up with the idea of voting out Mike and organizing it, but stepping in right when Jay was going to tell him about it and getting them to vote Christina.

Like I said before, the guys need to get Alicia out instead of Jonas. Christina would have worked as well. Both are women that they could have easily gotten support needed to vote out. There's enough dead weight weight left in the game that getting rid of one of those two to keep the numbers in their favor would have been worth it. Now because of that mistake plus the stupidity in last nights episode they're left scrambling.

I mean hey Jay, how much more of a sign do you need that you can't trust the girls!
Devil's advocate: It seems like he does know that, but what can he do? They already have the numbers, and if he makes himself a threat then he's next. By meekly going along, at least he might buy himself an extra vote or two to wait for a crack to form.
(And it's six women... if course a crack will form.)

Smart gameplay that makes for bad TV, I can live with. But dumb gameplay that also makes for bad TV... egh.
I don't know what's happened in the last few seasons, but 5th/6th placers seem to have completely lost their ability to figure out they're at the bottom of their alliance. It wasn't always this way. Survivor gameplay seems to have regressed to the first 2-3 seasons. Or maybe alliance leaders have just gotten really good at lying? Basically, Neleh and Paschal flipped back in season 4 Marquesas, which started a good 15+ seasons of mostly alliance stragglers being self-aware about their status and realizing they needed to do something. Seems like Boston Rob's iron-fisted control of his alliance in S22 started a regression trend.
Of course, I say all this assuming Troy promised final 3 spots to Christina and Alicia as part of the pitch. We weren't shown that. But if he didn't make any promises beyond final 5, I can see why they wouldn't have sufficient reason to move.

Question: Are these last three seasons just random chance or do we have a trend here? Kim is playing a masterful game, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I might have if we weren't coming off two consecutive seasons of the dominant core alliance skating all the way to the end unopposed -- with that alliance's fringes failing to figure out they were on the bottom, week after week after week.
I'm concerned that the idea of flipping alliances is being phased out (the one time it happened recently, Cochran last season, was met with massive derision and scorn, and he was booted ASAP). Somewhere along the line, the conventional wisdom became that original tribal lines are sacred, flipping is tantamount to going against your family, will make you a pariah, and make it impossible to win over an enraged jury. It seems like everyone is now totally petrified to play anything other than ultra-conservative games.
The problem, of course, is that people flipping alliances is the most entertaining part of the show. If the thing that makes the show entertaining is now deemed to be a sure-fire losing strategy, it would seem to be poison for the show's quality. They tried to address that by having everyone live on the same beach and then later mixing up the tribes, but the fact that even that failed is troubling. In the past, mixing tribes usually did the trick.

I think the root of the problem starts with Russel's first season. That was the season where backstabbing suddenly became a taboo thing that can lose you the game because the butthurt people on the jury just won't vote for you.
Combine that with Rob's most recent season where he quickly eliminated anyone that even appeared to waver and we've seen the game slowly evolve into what it is now. Ultra-conservative and boring. I'm not 100% sure if it's failure to identify where you sit in your alliance or people are just happy to make it to the final 3 and hope there's a Natalie or Sandra vote where they win simply because they offended the least number of people. Whatever the reasons, villains seem to be getting phased out. You can't win playing a true villain game anymore and it has made for bad TV.

If that was the lesson taken from Russell, it was the wrong one. Russell came out of a minority, outnumbered alliance. He needed other flippers to get him to the end. The lesson from Russell is that being a giant tool, even when you don't have to be, makes people unwilling to give you a million bucks.
I wonder if Survivor's current "terrified to flip" malaise couldn't be solved by giving everyone a flat appearance fee regardless of order of placement, with only the winner getting prize money. As it stands now, the longer you stay in the game, the more you make, up to $100,000 for the second place finisher. The difference between finishing 8th and finishing 5th is not an unsubstantial amount of money. That is extra motivation to not make waves and be content to finish fifth. If you make waves and it blows up on you, it actually does cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000-20,000.
I was already shocked that Alicia was was a special ed teacher given her attitude, but her comments in the last episode comparing Christina to one of her students were appalling. I hope she loses her job for that.

I'm actually wondering if she really is a special ed teacher; or if she was placed there because she had tenure and a poor attitude (so the rest of the parents didn't want her near their kids). This is the part of Survivor that is frustrating. Everyone is angling to be in a final 3 with Kim. None seem to realize she's going to run away with the vote if that happens. They really should be working to get her out, which would more or less level the playing field. won't happen though.

I liked the 2nd half of the last episode, but I'm always surprised Survivor can find so many grown adults that lose their shit when they see their parents/siblings/cousins. I love my parents and siblings and everything but damn, I'm an adult, I don't live with them or even see them more than once or twice a year anymore. And even when I lived closer, I don't think I'd be a emotional wreck being away from them for a month. Maybe it's exciting to see them on the island in that context. Or maybe I'm just a cold hearted bastard. Wives/husbands/girlfriends/ boyfriends/kids that you live with and see every day for years, I get freaking out leaving them for a month. If I were on that show and my brother showed up I'd be all, "hey, man, how's the kids? Great"

Waaay back on season 1 of Survivor, while family members did not show up in person, there was a "video from home" that everybody got to see. Nobody cried except for Jenna, who had two little girls at home and didn't get a video. I get that. But the CRAZY excessive ugly crying ever since then, you really gotta wonder.
I guess they're not faking it, but I wonder if some of them just let themselves go in the interest of not being seen by everyone else as cold? How else to explain everyone being pretty cool about it ONLY in season 1 before the show was established?
I get that it's stressful, et cetera, but damn. I feel like I'm extremely confident I would not break down. I'm very close with my family and I see them all the time, but geez...

Talk about clingy with Tarzan's wife. She was talking like she couldn't make toast without Tarzan helping her. Dislike people like that. Have a life (and brain) of your own please. THe other side of it though. She can play it at final 5, so she's guaranteed of final 4. She might have to win that final 4 immunity if they wise up and try to take her out.
