This. It's funny he was always the Kid, even though he was an veteran by the time I really remember watching him. And I still connect him more with the Expos (since they were in the same division with the Braves, and the Mets weren't back then).

Another remembrance: Expos versus the Reds on the Game of the Week. I still remember how big a deal the announcers made of the two catchers (Bench/Carter). Not many times were baseball games then (even now) so focused around two catchers. But even then, you knew you were watching two future HOF'mers at work.

He seemed like he always enjoyed the game and gave it his best. In some ways, even though we like to make fun of or give guys a hard time if they hang around too long, I never minded seeing him playing for the Dodgers or Giants because he still hustled like he was a rookie.

God, I fucking *hated* Gary Carter. It seems like half of my worst baseball memories from childhood had Gary Carter in close proximity. It wasn't even a "respect hate" where he terrified me because he was so awesome. It morphed way beyond that into straight-up hatred for everything he stood for. I hated him, hated his kids, his wife, his dead grandma, the town he was born in, his high school, the car he drove, the beer he drank, the after shave he wore and the color of his socks.

RIP, Gary. You are gone too soon. For a kid in middle-of-nowhere Indiana, you made baseball worth watching.

Not sure if this interests anyone here, but Seth Everett, who has hosted shows on ESPN radio and I believe currently works as a broadcaster in Philly, hosted a Gary Carter tribute on a site called Spreecast last night. Apparently its a video streaming service that allows people to watch along live and join in. Back story, Seth has been a family friend since before I was born, and grew up with my brother, who was an even bigger Carter fan than I was. So my brother heard he was hosting this thing and tuned in, and Seth had him on to share his memories of Carter as well. He shows up around the 11 minute mark and apparently is on for about 40 minutes, with a couple other guys at times. I only watched about the first 15 minutes so far but it's entertaining if you're a Carter fan and have some time to kill.
