Adam Yauch, who performed under the stage name MCA, is dead after losing a long battle with cancer, according to reports from Global Grind and TMZ.

The 47-year-old member of the Beastie Boys announced he would be receiving treatment for a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland in July 2009, and that that as a result the group would cancel some future shows and push back the release of a new album.

In 2011 it had been reported that Yauch had beaten the disease, but reports were sadly exaggerated. On the band's website he wrote:

"Hello My Friends While I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated. I’m continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future."

Most recently, it appeared Yauch's health had taken a turn for the worst when it was announced that he was unable to attend the Beastie Boys' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on March 14sad

Saw the Beastie Boys on their License to Ill tour way back in 86 or 87. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Man, I'm really bummed about this news.

Same, Run DMC, Fishbone and Murphys Law were the other acts for me. Got to meet all of them after the show, great guys.

They were true Pioneers, still remember the first time I heard 'Fight for your right (to party)' Was working for Orkin and treating a Mrs. Fields Cookies at the Glendal Galleria early in the morning when it came on on the Radio one of the employees had on........At first I was like WTF, then 30 seconds in I made a note to pick up the cassette cause it was so fucking cool.

Funny how such small details stick with you on some things.

RIP MCA

I have the Zune Pass...just downloaded all their albums and have been listening to them.

Beastie Boys were one of my first concerts I went to and it was in Memphis, TN. Brass Monkey, they came out on stage with a cart full of Brass Monkey and kept shaking them up and spraying the crowd...Junior high student close to the front of the stage..it was crazy.

Yes! They had Run DMC, The Fat Boys, Whoodini & maybe one other act I'm just not remembering at the moment, when they came to San Diego way back then.

Nice!! I didn't get to meet them, that is freaking awesome.

Marcellus Wiley (former Bills & Chargers DE; does a local LA show now with boxing's Max Kellerman) was just reminiscing about this exact concert, talking about MCA. Said it was his first ever concert.

I remember Wiley quite well when he was on the Chargers. Oh man, small world indeed. It was a kick ass concert. I think I still have the poster that I got that night, somewhere in storage.

A couple of incredibly important albums in their discography from a music-history perspective. Never been a very big fan, but liked enough of their stuff.

Really bummed to hear this though... I will spinning their stuff all weekend.

Don't know what to say. Their first album is one of my favorites ever and they've had enough songs throughout the years to keep me a fan. Sad to see him go.

Yep...back and the day, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys would get a lot of play. It's crazy to think that they started this off as a joke and would later become a influential group for a slew of rappers.
'Paul Revere' and the later 'Sabotage' are probably my favorites.

Very sad...grew up listening to the Beastie Boys in the 80's...and they were a main-staple of my music library during the 90's as they reached Alternative Rock crowds.

RIP MCA.

Thats pretty cool. They did something similar when Amy Whinehouse died at a concert in Brazil. They sang "Fix You" with an extended intro of the line "They wanted to send me to rehab, but I said no, no, no." Was really nice and sadly appropriate for "Fix You."

I hadn't realized she had died but it probably was more a question of "when" than "if". Sad that I missed the rounds of "Yes, Yes, Yes" jokes about rehab. *sniff*
