So I'm looking for a job. Desperately, actually...

I get an email about a position today that wanted me to fill out an online form. Done.

At the end, I get this:

Davies & Brown work nationwide, as such, followups may be conducted over the phone, and not in person. It is therefore required that we verify your identity and valid citizenship/residency, in order to achieve this we require a valid credit check report. There is no charge for this credit check and it will not negatively influence your credit, your score will NOT be used for determining suitability. When you complete the credit check below you will be given a customer number / reference, please retain this number as verification of completing the credit check. You should NOT send us your actual score or report, just the customer identification/reference number, your personal details will NOT be available to Davies & Brown or any employers as they are confidentially handled by the reporting agency.

Smells like bullshit to me.

Supposed to be a recruiter. It's for a "Customer Care Agent" position.

This is their site: Davies & Brown (http://www.daviesandbrown.com/)

Looks good...until I see the copyright date is 2010.

They have an address listed!

This is the google street view: 136 W ARIZONA ST. DETROIT, 48203 - Google Maps (http://g.co/maps/5uatr)

What makes this even worse is that since I started applying for almost EVERY job, this is the only reply I have received..

Every day it looks more & more like I should:

a. Never have left NYC.

b. Not bought this condo.

Cover letters may help. I'm looking right now. Nothing yet after 4 weeks but I've had a bunch of interviews (phone and in person). Still in running for 3 or so. I do individual cover letters for each job application. Your mileage may vary. Good luck man. It's no fun - that's for sure.

Oh and for your question - totally sounds like a scam.

Yep, when I was looking for a job and came across something like this I moved right along. It would be one thing if they asked for this after several interviews or something and you met in person, but this looks like a bunch of bunk.

I've been applying for nearly everything for the last month. Not even one callback. Been applying for things that looked good since the I moved back. Got one part time gig I'm still at (1 day/week with no hope for anything more... unless you count my boss offering me 2 - 2.5 hours/day 5 days a week) and I had a seasonal gig that died with the season.

It is called a "CPA" offer. You apply for the free credit report and they get paid a couple dollars from the credit report agency. The credit report agency the will spam the crap out of you, or if you give them your CC# you might see some charges popping up on your Credit card.

heh... I got an email from Simpson Management (http://www.simpsonmanagement.com/)

Funny that when I got to step 3 of the application process it was this:

IMPORTANT

Step 3 of 3

Because you may be working in a professional environment dealing with sensitive information, we prefer all applicants to obtain a standard credit check.

There is no charge for this credit check and it will not negatively influence your credit. The credit check is done through a 3rd party and we will not have access to it without your permission. When you complete the credit check below you will be given a reference number. Keep this handy, you may need this during an interview as verification of completing the credit check.

If you have not pulled your score within the last 2 months, you can get it instantly by Clicking Here.

After you have completed your credit check, please send an email to [email protected]
Please title your email 'Application/Credit Check Complete' and simply include your name in body of the email. We will forward your application to the HR Manager as soon as the verification has been completed.

funny that the second "company" to contact me wants me to do a credit check too...

They appear to be getting ready for the Soap Box Derby. I think Spanky & Our Gang have competition this year!

Ever think of starting your own business?

Need money to do that...

I just had my first interview this year (are we really in June???)

Supposed to hear tomorrow. I am nervous as hell...

I actually interviewed for two openings at an apartment building, one an office assistant, the other a doorman. I think the interview went alright... it doesn't feel like I smashed the ball out of the park or anything & the guy that was interviewing after me was already waiting when I got there (on time.)

She asked what I thought my biggest problem would be. I said that it would just be a matter of learning all the particulars of the position and getting up to speed, which i don't see a problem with. She then told me that a woman she interviewed yesterday told her "I can do this job with my eyes closed." She then asked her what the job entailed & the woman admitted she didn't know anything about what she would be doing.

I had 2 phone interviews this week, another 2 more scheduled next week. By then, I will have had 15 phone interviews and 7 face to face interviews. I am still waiting to hear back about 2 positions. Each of those 2 positions have been a 4-8 week wait (following the face to face interview)...so far, yet as of this very week, each say I am still a candidate. The waiting sucks. It really does.

Well, fuck me. Of the two positions I interviewed for, one is relisted online today. I called yesterday to see about an update, as she said she would let me know on Friday but my phone never rang. Just got the standard "she's not available." Today I called & she answered... The office assistant position has been filled. I informed her I would still be interested in the doorman position. She said they are still looking into the doorman position. I brought up that they have it relisted online. She just repeated that they are "still looking into the position, ok?"

What do you have to do to get a fucking job?

That totally blows man. Look at it on the bright side though, if they can't even pay you the common courtesy of letting you know that they didn't select you, just imagine how they treat the people that actually work for them.

Not trying to be a smart ass here and I know things are sometimes easier said than done, but, to answer your question...I don't think being in Detroit is helping.

Don't get me wrong, I understand having obligations that keep you there, but, Detroit (for years) has been a black hole for employment from my understanding. Maybe it's time to leave?

M GO BLUE!!!
06-19-2012, 06:34 PM
Maybe it's time to leave?

I'm thinking about it. I hate to do it, as my heart is in this city and this condo I'm rebuilding is coming out SWEET. I'd really like to get it done & enjoy it.

But if I can't pay the bills it will either be hitting the market in a couple months or in the spring. Then it would be back to NYC & making calls to my old employers to see if I could get back part time. :(

Detroit really is a fascinating story. Take a midsize city. Turn it into one of the top four in the nation. Then watch as federal policies promoting sprawl destroy it.

It definitely would be a tough thing to do, especially having that condo of yours. Sometimes the best laid plans just don't work out, unfortunately.

My only advice if you are thinking about moving back NYC, I'd start putting out feelers now. I'd also look into a different part of the country where employment is going up. Believe it or not, there are some areas that are doing that.

I think Detroit has been on its steady decline to suckyness, since the early 80s. If 30 years hasn't been enough time to turn that city around, I'm not sure it ever will.

My next question is, what are you trained to do? 99% of my job contacts are in California, but, I do have some friends further east that may know of some jobs closer to Detroit or NYC. Again though, just depends on what kind of work you do.

Tell Lowes that you could bench press one of their trucks.

I have 20 years in radio. One of my bosses in NYC told be when I left that if it didn't work to call him. The other one didn't say so outright, but thanked me for my time there & told me "you were always solid for us." If I were looking seriously at that road I would call him. It was $20/hour & when I left I had just been told it was about time for a raise..

Sounds like (no pun intended) it's time to get the Morning Zoo Crew going again. :)

Not sure what you did, if you were on-air or more on the producing side, but, if you got the voice, you ever think about voice over work?

Voice over can be even more difficult to get in than radio. Was both on-air and behind the scenes. The only problem I have on-air now would be that I have got to a point where I have a lot more difficulty faking that I give a rats ass about some idiot that can't sing who happens to have a hit record.

If I get a job that allows me a little stability and I'm to the point where my place isn't requiring a lot of work, I was thinking about doing a podcast. (Despite the fact that "podcasts" seem like what people do when they have no talent and just want to pretend they are in the business)

Ok cool. I was going to say if you were more on the technical side of things I'd look for openings at Skywalker Sound. (I just looked, all they have is a grand total of two administrative jobs). Plus it's California and the bay area is not the cheapest of places to live.

Ah yes, a lot of podcasts are pretty abysmal. Hopefully something will come along soon man. I was out of work for 2 years back in the mid 90s, so I know how much it sucks.
