We are days away from the 2012 World Series of Poker, so it's time to start our annual pool.

Rules:

Pick 10 Poker Players

1 of the poker players must be female
1 of the poker players must not have a bracelet.
1 of your picks can be made "Money Man" and they will score double points for you.
1 of your picks can be made "Main Event Champion". If they win the Main Event, you win the pool by default. (This has never happened, but we've had deep runs by Allen Cunningham, Phil Ivey, and Michael Mizrachi).

Scoring is based on cash won by your players. You get 1 point for every $1,000 your picks earn.

This will be the 9th year of the contest. Previous winners...

2011 - Quiksand
2010 - jbergey22
2009 - Comey
2008 - MollyMurphy
2007 - timmynausea
2006 - Barkeep49
2005 - Chubby
2004 - albionmoonlight

The first scoring event starts May 28th, so try to have your picks in by then. You can still enter after that, but will not get any points for events that have already started.

Some good action going on today:

In Event 17 ($10k Pot Limit HE) they are down to 11 people and Ivey has 4th highest stack.
In Event 18 ($2.5k Razz), they are down to 15. Hellmuth is chip leader and Greenstein is 8th.

Question?

Are we counting the million dollar buy in event? Seems like it could really skew the scoring.

The Poker Brat Refuses to Budge

Brandon Cantu, who is seated in the six seat, just asked Phil Hellmuth, who is in Seat 5, if he could scoot down a bit given the players in Seats 3 and 4 have been eliminated.

"No," said Hellmuth. "This is my lucky seat." Cantu seemed taken aback that such a simple request was denied and asked the floor if he'd request Hellmuth to move down a bit. "Even six inches," Cantu said.

The floor politely asked Hellmuth if he'd be willing to move down and again the "Poker Brat" refused. Cantu asked for a little help and the floor said he could check with his superiors, which prompted Hellmuth to say, "You better call Jack [Effel]."

Despite his unwillingness to budge, Hellmuth did say with sincerity, "I love Brandon Cantu." Hellmuth's stubbornness may just be a result of superstition, though it appears he has scooted down a bit.

haha, I love Hellmuth

The precedent has always been to count any event that has a regular Event #, which leaves out the Bracelet Bounty and the Doubles event, but not the $1m buy-in which is listed as Event #55. Since it's a bracelet event, I think it should be counted.

ok. I was just looking back at last years winner, he has about 4200 points. Whoever wins the million dollar event will likely score more than that. Given the players that will be in this event are pretty big name players who are likely to be on someones team seems like the rest of the competition is rendered obsolete.

Ok, so we have a few options here:

1) We could not count the event at all.
2) We could put a cap on possible amount earned for the event.
3) Just count it under the normal rules.
4) If we end up with different winners based on counting it or not, we will have co-champions. Then next year we can come up with a rule before the WSOP starts.

I'm not opposed to any of these scenarios, but I'm not comfortable changing the way it's been done in the past unless there's a consensus from the participants. So speak up guys. What do you want to do?

Lathum
06-10-2012, 10:47 PM
My vote is to just cancel it. Seems easiest. Or make the points count 1 per 100K since the buy in is 100X the main event buy in.

Here's the list of confirmed entrants so far: 30 Players Confirmed Big One for One Drop; Estimated $12,266,668 to Winner | PokerNews (http://www.pokernews.com/news/2012/04/30-players-confirmed-big-one-for-one-drop-12435.htm)

It could change of course, but it looks like Negreanu and Elky are the two potential game changers since they've been picked as Money Men. The other pros that were picked have been picked by most of the participants.

For what it is worth, I cross-referenced that list and certainly factored it into my picks. I would be more in favor of a cap on points than eliminating the event entirely, since my picks would almost certainly been different if we had a ruling on skipping the event.

Interesting article on the participants. Lots of dead money considering the buy in. Should be interesting. Surprised to see some of the names on there have that deep a roll, although I'm sure lots of them sold shares of themselves.

Yeah, I thought people had done this, which is why I don't think it's fair to eliminate it.

I'm fine with leaving this as is. If it makes the other events obsolete, then so be it. We'll learn and come up with a new rule next year before the WSOP starts.

I made some changes to the scoring, because I discovered I had missed some players who I was not looking for in the updates, such as Shawn Buchanan and Dan Kelly. The biggest change was Chris Bjorin whose 124 pt score in Event 4 vaults ntndeacon into 1st place.

Gus Hansen was the winner of the $25k mega satellite. The way it worked out, the winner got entry into the One Drop and 2nd place got $1 million. When it got to final 2, Shaun Deeb clearly threw the event to get the money instead of the ticket.

It's been a brutal day for our picked players. Mercier was just eliminated with KK against AA for Esfandiari (who nobody picked). That leaves the only remaining picked players as:

Sam Trickett (hoops)
Phil Hellmuth (Subby $$, rockboy $$, Quik, King, Ntn, hoops, Larry, Lathum)

And Hellmuth is useless for those that didn't make him Money Man, so it's down to Subby, rockboy, and hoops who stand to benefit from this tourney.

Trickett and Hellmuth both make it into the money. I think Trickett is the chip leader with 35 million or so after sending off the bubble boy (tough bubble, seven figues) and Hellmuth is somewhere in middle of pack around 10 million.

Love that Trickett answered the "who would you pick to play heads up" question and said "Hellmuth". I'm not sure if it is because he thinks Phil is weak, or if it is respect for his accomplishments, but just refreshing to see someone not stumble around trying to give a politically correct answer.

Picked players that are still alive with their chip counts and current rank:

6. Vanessa Selbst (hoops, Lathum) - $1,282,000
81. Daniel Negreanu (Quik $$, king $$, Lathum, rockboy, hoops, digamma) - $560,000
352. John Juanda (Quik, Larry)- $195,000

Assuming I'm not missing any remaining players, it looks like we only have one person with a chance left to unseat hoops and it's a very remote chance..

Quiksand - Has Negreanu as $$, but hoops has him as a regular pick so the difference wouldn't be enough even if Negreanu wins. But he could still win with Juanda as ME or if Negreanu and Juanda are 1-2. And he needs Selbst to implode soon.
