You know who I'd never really heard before but now I've heard her new song a bunch thanks to my daughter, is Rihanna. She has one of those voices you know is bad because even autotuned and with all the studio tricks they apply, it sounds impossibly thin, airy, and like she can barely hit the high notes. I can't remember how it goes except that the chorus is just one line repeated 3 or 4 times.

Yeah, that's it. Man after sitting through that song and a couple others on Radio Disney on the way home from practice last night, I was happy to turn on Liquid Metal to catch Type O Negative's Black No. 1. I forced her to listen to almost the entire thing (turned it off before the "IT WAS LIKE FUCKIN' THE DEAD!" line which would have gotten me thrown out of the house by the wife). But it was enough to purify my soul.

One thing songs like this tell me is A: Pop music is still devolving and B: if I wanted to, I could use minimal effort to create a song with very similar qualities and try and cash in for a quick buck. I know enough girls with good enough looks and voices to replicate this, and its pretty easy to make a beat like this one given an hour or so with fruityloops..

Pitbulling has become a 'verb'. It means to have a song change tempo to Reggaeton mid-track, and then have Pittbull talk in a low, deep voice over the track, preferably throwing in a little Spanish here and there for good measure.

Having heard that new Justin Beiber song for the umpteenth time last night, it finally occurred to me why I can't stand him - how does someone like that have hip hop/street cred? His songs make no sense when you combine them with... him. There's this very obvious disjoinder, and I can't for the life of me understand why he's popular or how big names are so willing to associate with him.
That Boyfriend song is a perfect example. Dude raps, which is funny enough to think about on its own, and then in the middle of an otherwise serious song, he drops a BUZZ LIGHTYEAR reference. WTF? I suppose it's brilliant marketing to my kids (8 and 12), but it's not like his only audience is tweens. He seems pretty popular in general. I don't get it.

re: Beebs ... one of the crappier things about him is that he seems to be a decent kid. Pretty much every adult artist who has done anything with him comes away raving about him off-stage. With his latest deal -- taking the girl to the Billboard Awards after he realized he couldn't go to her prom after all -- he's either an actual good guy or he's got brilliant handlers.
edit to add: The reason I say being a good kid is crappy in this case is that it makes it harder for me to outright hate him. He's still a musical wasteland, but not necessarily a bad guy.

I'm not sure I hate him. I just don't understand him justaposed with his music, or the hype. It's the hip hop edge that makes no sense to me. It seems to me that nearly any other kid that age who looked like him who tried to pull that off would get laughed off stage and berated like he was Urkel at a porn convention or something.
I'm sure he's a nice kid and all, but frankly, that just makes the hip hop/rap thing even more ridiculous.

asian pop music in general seems to be about as bas as their game shows are insane ;) (thereīs some kickass female jazz artists though according to a friend whose been to china for a year ;) )
If you are interested in seeing lots of european pop songs you never heard before (only unreleased songs are allowed) and likely never will again (thereīs exceptions, f.e. ABBA and Celine Dion kickstarted their career there) : Tomorrow is the Eurovision Song Contest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest_2012) . The songs are often awful, sometimes good and sometimes even wildly entertaining. There are also skimpy outfits on display ! ;) ) Basically every country in Europe sent a contestant (some countries just sent their biggest star, the bigger ones often just some nobody or weird acts) and the "best" 28 play tomorrow getting votes and thus points from the public of all the countries (12, 10, 8, 7 down to 1). Most points in the end wins.
I guess most songs will be on youtube allready or will be the day after.
Also, itīs a nice lection in geography and politics: countries that like each other historically, are neighbours or have large immigrant numbers (like turks in germany) vote for each other and if you see a neighbouring country not get any points you know they hate their guts :)
Sadly, itīs become mostly one-size-fits all with regular pop songs, used to have truly "local" stuff (instruments from the country and stuff) and also often sent wildly entertaining crazy persons that made it interesting even for me. We germans have a proud tradition there, sending guys that were basically folk singers on crack or comedians making fun of the whole thing, hereīs 2 of those guys we somehow felt fit to represent us on a european stage :
<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7fgLrfi9JCI" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="420"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6Gl37zfO1Po" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>
(sort of like a german version of jimmy fallon)
also, unforgettable the winner of 2006 :
<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/gAh9NRGNhUU" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>
There, feel better yet ? :D (and yes, it mostly won because of kids having drinking parties and voting for the most ludicrous song out there ;) I think they changed the voting format the year after :D )

First time i saw a Justin Bieber video i thought it was a parody to sth, turns out it was cruel reality.
as for this call-me-Lady, i actually think sheīs kinda cute. The song is god awful though. Actually, calling it a song might be too much as itīs basically just 2 lines and the same tune repeated for 3 minutes. And i thought the early 00s were bad ...

ok, i just wasted 30 minutes browsing through the internet on this phenomenon and would call it 30 minutes well wasted ;)
One positive thing iīll have to say for all theese kids doing this type of music nowadays is that they sure as hell take themselves a lot less serious than their equivalents in the 90s or early 00s. Maybe itīs just me, but this makes it somewhat more easy to live with it.
And the fact that itīs led to so many people getting creative with it, that alone propably makes it a good thing. And honestly, videos like the Harvard one entertained me as well :)
I would sit through Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" on replay all day and night before I listened to this song again once. And this is from someone whose guiltiest secret pleasure of all is bubblegum female pop.

For the past 40+ years, we've had overproduced/overhyped young pop stars, so that part is no different. What is different, imo, that those of today simply cannot carry a tune. I listened to those massively popular youtube videos and in almost every case, the pop stars are singing off-key and embelish/shriek/rap way too much in order to hide the lack of singing ability. I guess we're not supposed to pay attention to the music but only the looks and moves.

I used to think that, but have since come to the conclusion that their target audience simply likes the "embellish/shriek/rap" and autotune sound more than a straight talented singer. So that's who succeeds and that's who's copied.
In other words. We are old.
