3. For each draft pick, you must specify the creator of the character. The creator can only be used once per player and once per main category.
4. For the date categories (21st, 20th, 19th, Pre-19th), we are using the time that the character was originally created.
5. For Literary, Film, TV, etc. categories, you can draft a character that did not initially debut in that format if you feel they are more notable for a different format.
6. You can draft real people. In this case, the creator should be designated as "Real" and this is subject to the same limitations as above.
7. You can draft characters created by unknown people. In this case, the creator should be designated as "Unknown" and is subject to same limitations as above.
8. Please bold your selections and use the following format - "1.1 Your Mom, Muscle, Pre-18th Century (Real)"
9. I will be lenient on enforcing time limits as long as we are making good progress each day. If you are not going to be available during normal daytime hours, please try to submit lists.
10. At the end of the draft, I will post a voting thread including everyone's picks. FOFC members will vote on the best Super Team.

It's amazing how difficult a choice this was. Not only am I not all that well-versed in the comic book superhero world (from which I figure a number of characters will be used in this draft), but just the wealth of characters and information was immense and very hard to navigate.
I had many considerations. Do I go with the most powerful character I can think of, thinking of team versus team conflict? Do I go with the most popular character I can think of, because in the end this draft will come down to a popularity contest? Do I go with the character who is the best choice in a scarce category, like drafting a C or a SS higher in a baseball draft? What category do I select if my choice applies to many?
I ended up going with the popularity option. Batman is generally considered the 2nd most popular comic book character of all time, from what I have found anyway. Combine with the coming movie in the very popular series by Nolan, I thought he was the best fit, going popular.
Batman is not even technically a superhero in that he has no innate superpowers. He is instead just a guy with a lot of money and intelligence and drive. Because of his knowledge of science and his heavy use of gadgetry, I am hopeful I am not stretching him too much by placing him in the Science/Gadgets section. I felt that would be a more difficult category to fill.
I could have put Batman in a number of different source categories, and went with Comic Book, for the reason that that is his original source and because I felt that for me it is a pretty limiting category, as I don't really read comic books. I realize for those that do, the Comic Book category will be a wealthy source material.
I don't know which between the artist and writer is most responsible for creating Batman so I have included both. As I have heard of neither (no doubt they are both well accomplished in the comic book realm, but of that I am ignorant), I wasn't too concerned about having them unavailable to me going forward.

Good choice by hoops. Superman was the superhero generally placed at the top of the most popular lists, and only one I found consistently ahead of Batman.

The creator limitation for drafter and category was in there from the beginning. I wanted to have some strategic limitations, but didn't want to completely cancel out too many people, so I decided against a creator being eliminated for the entire draft.
However, the creators are not limited by the subcategories. So for example Seigel is now eliminated for Protector, but not for 20th Century.

One Above All - I read a ton of Marvel comics in 80s/90s and know some of the stuff I saw in the Wikipedia entry, but I didn't recognize the name. I think this might be a tough one to sell to the voters, relative to other picks that could have been had in that spot.

I had to Google your other pick, but once I saw it I said, "oh, the Dragonball guy" and it made sense ... or at least relative to the other 1st round pick I had to Google.
I think both of us have made picks so far on categories that we thought were top-heavy. But I've definitely shifted my feelings on the depth of a couple of categories this evening as I actually sat down and put some work into compiling more detailed lists/classifications rather than just the free-form association I did when seeing I had pick 1.2 this morning.

Right, there was no way I wasn't ending up with Superman/Batman to start the draft - just depended on where CR went. But after that it was time to start thinking about categories more than stuff like my personal favorite (as in, semi-obscure and underrated) comic book characters.
Anyway, I've watched enough of these in the past to have ideas about what I wanted to do but it is fun/different to actually be making the picks and worrying about the "Shia LaBeouf" moment.

I took it more to mean.. "resourceful". Not so much a straight-up fighter, trained, etc - but finds ways to make stuff happen. Wins fights you wouldn't necessarily expect, etc.
Maybe "unconventional" would be another good word.

In fact, I feel pretty strongly about that. As an example, if someone switched say Hulk from Muscle to something so he could pick another stan lee in muscle because no one else was allowed ot pick anyone there the whole draft. It just doesnt work to swap your categories unless it was right after.

As someone who has read along, I've seen the moderators be pretty flexible on allowing a change in category in the case of Sun Tzu (oops, invalid pick for category due to previous pick blocking it) but not so much 4 rounds later to give more flexibility in later picks.
I'm fine with whatever larry wants to enforce, but I figured I would chime in on the topic since I'm around.

A category cannot be changed once other picks have been made. It wouldn't be fair to allow that since people that drafted after you were blocked from picking that creator in the original category and they may have drafted different accordingly.

Agreed. Moderators are flexible on switching things if they violate the rules, I guess. But overall, no, you can't just go switching. Especially based on what Danny said, you have blocked someone for a couple dozen picks and now suddenly that spot is free and someone may have selected differently because of it.

From the original thread:
With the original rule, I felt that everyone would simply use their female pick for Love Interest. When I changed it from Female to Female Hero, I realized people would just pick a powerful female hero in the Love Interest category, going against the intent of that category which was meant to include characters whose main function was as a love interest.
So what I'm going to do is just stipulate that the Love Interest category will not be a fighting member of the super team, so if you pick a powerful character in that category, it will be a waste and voters should count that against you. I'll also change Female Hero back to Female, just in case someone wants to use their Female pick on an Arch Nemesis.
So yes, the female subcategory should be a hero or Arch Villain.

My reading of your statement above was that we could use a female as love interest, they just wouldn't be a "fighter".

My explanation was more convoluted than necessary. What I meant was when I renamed the category to "Female Hero", I thought people would take advantage by picking say Wonder Woman as Love Interest, going against the intent. So to counteract that I stated that the female would not be a fighting member of the team. As I said in the convoluted statement, I changed female hero back to female only so you could pick an archvillain in that category. I should've just said that "love interest, female" was not a valid combo, but then I was worried that people would think you couldn't pick a female love interest. Everyone should pick one female outside of the love interest category.. Sorry this got so complicated and hope it doesn't screw anyone up.

Clarification on the female issue due to an inquiry I received:
You may use the Love Interest, Female combo as long as you draft a female somewhere else.
The simplest way to put the rule: You should have at least one female outside of the Love Interest category.
