View Full Version : FOFC Crawl Comp #5-Octopode Venom Mage

Well I guess I'll start this since nobody else has. :) In honor of the new race being added to this version of Crawl, the Octopode, I've decided to use it for this Comp. The original idea was to use your choice of Elementalist for it, but I was looking back at the previous Comps, and saw we had already done an Ice Elementalist. Was going to go Wizard, then saw Venom Mage recommended as something that has an easy time early on. Given that some of us might be rusty (like me) with our Crawl skills or new to the game entirely, this seemed like a nice way to ease ourselves back into the game. I've not tested it though so may not turn out that great in the long run.

First off-make sure you have the latest version of Crawl, 10.2 because there are no Octopodes in previous versions. You can download the game here:

Downloads « Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/downloads)

I much prefer the graphical version. I would recommend doing a search for Crawl Comp in this forum and read through the first comp for sure and maybe the second as a lot of good advice and helpful tips were given there. You can also check out the link to the Tavern on the downloads page-its a forum with a ton of good info/help. Don't be shy if you haven't played before-the game comes with a tutorial mode you can try first-and as you'll see if you read the first comp, many of us will help you if you need it here. And a complete newcomer won one of the comps, so everyone has a shot of winning.

We'll go with High Score-you can post your morgue dumps here (you may need to kill your current character at the end to get a dump-can't remember if we found a workaround for that or not). Make sure you use code tags for sure and spoilers tag if you want as the dumps are quite large.

As with the first comps, please post regularly with your experiences-funny/embarassing/annoying deaths-great finds (and remember an Octopode can wear eight rings!), last second saves, ideas on how to use your spells, etc. Please post in here to let me know you are participating. Let's set an end date of July 1 at midnight EST since its a nice easy to remember end point.

:::waves his tentacles in greeting and celebration of the new comp:::

Welcome Zinto and Grover! One thing to remember is that it costs food to cast spells, so you can't just use them on every mob you meet. Save them for tougher mobs (hobgoblins and snakes for example on level 1) if you can and try to find alternate ways of fighting easier mobs (rats and bats for example on level 1)

Thomkal

One thing I'm noticing with the Octopod is its ability to constrict mobs-grab hold of them to prevent them from moving away and doing damage every round they are held. You start out with a decent amount of stealth-so it is possible to fight without a weapon early on if you want to save your Sting spell (which does a lot of damage starting out) for the more threatening mobs. Haven't found any rings yet with my Octowizzy, but I'm still on Level 1. :)

Made it to the second level of the dungeon with my guy without too much trouble but did have to rest a lot from damage taken and regen mana. Was hungry a lot towards the end of exploring level 1, thankfully had found a couple pieces of fruit and of course had corpses to eat.

I found my first piece of jewelry-an amulet-was hoping for gourmand to help with the food crisis, but alas it was an amulet of rage-which is pretty funny when you think about it, a berserker spell casting Octopode-but will actually be nice in a life or death situation. Made it to Character Level 3 and have picked up the mighty Mephitic Cloud spell-Just remember to make sure you are out of the radius when you cast it!

So how's everybody doing so far? Just found my first ring...and it was cursed of course. Thankfully had a scroll of remove curse. I'm now out of food, so may not last long with this guy. Which is why I'm not a big fan of the spells using up food part of Crawl. I like the idea behind it, but it makes me stay away from the pure spellcasting classes unless I pick a race that helps with food issues.

Moving down to level 3 of the dungeon now after exploring level 2, one of my favorite level layouts, five rows of small interconnected rooms. Food issues a little better found an apple and forgot I had a potion of porridge. No runed or glowing weapons found yet, no rings besides the cursed one, and no potions of curing/heal wounds ID'ed yet.

Moving down to level 2 of the dungeon. 17% from XL3. Found a +2 glowing elvish whip. Haven't had to expel any mana yet, which is nice. Have a pot of heal wounds and restore abilities.

After a couple of poor showings, I finally made it down to the third level of the dungeon only to run into some Orcs and was hit by a smite which ended that Octopode's life.

Just started Dungeon Level 3, and my guy found another amulet..this time it was the Amulet of the Gourmand though. :) I likely will die within five paces after posting this.

Zinto

Well started on my next guy and pushed through the first level of the dungeon without using any spells. Got to level two and is really close to level three. Also found a ring of magical power which will be helpful going forward.

Zinto
06-13-2012, 04:25 PM
And then I flew through the second level of the dungeon. It was smaller level and there was not any exciting items. The coolest thing was one of my favorite rooms I have seen with a bunch of dead minotaurs and some beef jerkey. I leveled up twice and learned Mephitic Cloud. My food situation is looking pretty good right now too since I have two loafs of bread on three sticks of beef jerkey.

Zinto
06-13-2012, 04:33 PM
Well, on level three everything was looking pretty good. I found a ring of wizardry and was sitting on three loafs of bread, two sticks of beef jerky, and an apple. Unfortunately I ran into the ghost of dungeon crawlers past and was easily handled by him as I tried to run away.

Ooof that was looking pretty sweet for you with the Wizardry/Magical Power 1-2 punch. I hate player ghosts-oh they are cool and all, but always seem way overpowered for the level that you encounter them on. I would have tried to run away too.

Just hit character level 6 while on Dungeon Level 4. Been running for my life a bit-avoiding named mobs-Duvessa and her lover on this level, which is mostly open. Nearly died to a worker ant, but my constriction saved me just in time.

I can't stop playing Football Manager, but once I do, I'm on this. I suck at spellcasters even more than the usual fare, so I'm sure it'll be quick and tragic.

Sorry to hear that Izulde. You might ask at The Tavern in their Technical Support forum to see if anybody can help.

I've made it Character Level 7 after taking out Jessica and getting lucky taking out Sigmund and a few orcs hanging out around the Temple. Sif Muna altar was not in the Temple so went with Vehumet instead.

Successfully avoided D&D on that level and another worker ant after the last one nearly killed me-have to leave Dungeon Level 4 a bit unexplored to stay away from them, but I'd rather live than risk it on them.

Sadly have to report the death of the original Octowizzy here. Had successfully snuck around an ogre on dungeon level 5 but then woke him up. Had him poisoned, but it wasn't killing him quickly and three hits of his giant club did me in. Had an Un-ID'ed wand of fireballs that I forgot to try out, might have saved me, but had no healing an an Un-Id'ed Scroll of Teleportation.

Shame though had just got Vehumet's power of getting mana back with each kill, and needed one more level to learn Venom Bolt spell. Will probably start Octowizzy2 later today. How is everyone else doing?

Lose out on +4 scale mail because its armor our octopode friend here can't wear :( But I do find an mace of crushing in that same group of orcs. Going to test it out but will probably stay with the dagger of protection due to the AC boost. I have to bypass my first portal, the sewers, because just about everything there resists poison. And I only have one food item-most everything in the sewers is poisonous to eat.

I've found the portal to the Orcish Mines on Level 7 of the Dungeon and that makes for an interesting dilemma. Most of the time the Lair is the easier branch, but in reading the wiki it recommends Venom Mages in particular take on the Mines first since the only poison resistant mob there are wargs. Since I took out the guards around the enterance, including an Orc Warrior, pretty easily with Mephitic Cloud, so I'll likely head there after clearing the level.

Cue death post in 3...2...1 :)

okay the fact that you can join a religion and get benefits from it is just awesome.

So far Septopus V has made it the furthest in the family. Had a ring, got an enchanted tentacle and was looking good, but then on level 2 ran into some asshat thief named Sigmund who stole from him then pelted him with fire from afar.

can /should you eat corpses in this game?

You absolutely should eat corpses. Many spells cost Food to cast and so you will go hungry fairly quickly. You'll find a lot of regular food in the dungeon, but eating corpses are a necessity as well.

But eat the right ones-some will make you sick and weak, or poison you amongst other things. the 'v' key will let you examine things-and doing that on a corpse will tell you if its safe to eat or not.

You have to wait until you are hungry to eat corpses, as an act of last resort. Many races are like this, a few can eat them anytime. A magic item or two will as well (amulet of gourmand is often found early on). The strategy here is to save your "real" food till you have no other choice but to eat them, so stock up on cut up corpses-they will rot quickly and don't provide as much food as most food items, but they will keep you from dying from starvation unless you are very unlucky.

Is there a "cut up corpse" option?

Thomkal

okay the fact that you can join a religion and get benefits from it is just awesome.

So far Septopus V has made it the furthest in the family. Had a ring, got an enchanted tentacle and was looking good, but then on level 2 ran into some asshat thief named Sigmund who stole from him then pelted him with fire from afar.

Sif Muna and Vehumet are the two main gods for magic users-Vehumet probably is the better god for a venom mage. Yeah what Sloppy said about Sigmund-you don't want anything to do with him until you have Mephitic Cloud. If you are new to the game, its probably best to try to avoid all of the named mobs just to be safe.

Nice trick. :) With scrolls I usually wait till I get two or more of one then read one. If you get an item list to use the scroll on, you use the scroll and get some kind of message about it not working on that item, its likely a scroll of remove curse if you find it early on. There are scrolls of detect curse out there too. I usually stockpile a bunch of un'ID'ed items then read a scroll of detect curse on them to get the most benefit from them.

It took me a long time to come around to this strategy-but use your initial identify scrolls on potions. there's quite a few that can save your life and not just healing ones. So try to get them ID'ed as soon as possible.

Septopus VI was mauled to death by a pack of jackals. :P

Dying often and dying early are the expected results for a new player. :) Jackals can be tough if found on the first level of the dungeon. When you get a pack like that, the idea is to try to lead them into a corridor so you can take them on one at a time. Once you get your Mephitic Cloud spell jackals won't be much of a problem anymore.

But man I keep getting screwed on level 2 or 3 by room situations. And I haven't ever gotten cure poison of cloud to work. It usually helps to kill me when i cast those :(

what about weapons. I'm really liking the tenatcle thing and the constriction. IS there a time when I should eventually use a weapon?

The good thing is even with a weapon in hand...er tentacle, you will still be able to constrict something with the other tentacles. So you should try to find a weapon. Look for something that adds damage to the normal weapon-like flame, cold, or venom. Creatures that are vulnerable to that will take extra damage. And comes in handy when facing poison resistant creatures. Probably shouldn't use a weapon of chaos till your more comfortable with what it can do. Be looking for artifact weapons (and other kinds) too. They are bright white when you see one so you will know its an artifact right away.

By all means get some kind of missile weapon. Darts and stones are found in great numbers usually early on. hit the = key to "reletter" your items. Put your missile weapon as b, your hand to hand weapon in c. Then hit the ' key to cycle between weapons. This will only let you switch between your tentacles and your missile weapon, so you will have to hit the w button to wield the hand to hand weapon. Slings, bows, and crossbows will be found, usually slings first. Be on the lookout for javelins and spears you can throw too. You can change what's in your quiver with the q or Shift-q key can't remember which right now. So you can have say darts in one of your other tentacles when carrying a hand to hand weapon or using your tentacles to attack with so you have a distance weapon until they get close enough to attack hand to hand.

This character isn't easy

That was my initial strategy when I first started playing but there are some nasty and potentially nasty potions out there that will poison you, drop your stats, or give you a mutation that can be pretty nasty. And you really don't want to drink a potion of paralyzation and have something come up you didn't see come up and beat the crap out of you either. :)

For improving your spell chance of successfully being cast, raise your INT when you get the choice to raise one of your stats starting at level 3. Also training your spellcasting skill will help here and raising both will help with spell hunger from casting so many of them. the m key is the skills key. Hit the letter of the spellcasting spell until it is highlited in white to train it more than your other skills. Turn off things like traps and doors training by hitting the letter until they turn black. Poison Magic obviously should be highlighted too.

Just be patient-the more you get to know the game, the better you will be able to handle situations on level 2 and 3 and beyond. And get Mephitic Cloud as soon as possible-you won't believe how much it makes life easier for you. Running away is always an option you should consider when faced with an unfamilar foe(s) till you either get in a better position to attack them or to avoid what you think might be a difficult encounter.

Wow starting next to a worm zombie? I wouldn't have thought that possible. The strategy with the worms to remember? You are faster than them. By the time you usually encounter then, your Sting spell should be strong enough to handle them. Get them poisoned, then take a step away and poison/ranged weapon them/repeat-get low on hit points? run away from them entirely.

Yeah Grinder is a bastard. I was playing another character, a troll barbarian who was just ruling the dungeon, met up with him, he was carrying a weapon of displacement-those weapons have a chance of sending a person/mob to the Abyss-someplace you do not want to go and it was shortly game over. You just have to kind of shrug when you die to a mob you've never faced before and accept it as a learning experience.

Speaking of spears, Septopus XXI found a spear of venom. Stupidly he picked it up and carried it around. THen he put it down just in time.

what's wrong with using a spear of venom? especially because (I think) you can attack from one extra square away with it and other polearm weapons. Use the v key (i think) to evoke it to attack from that extra square. It can save your mana if you poison something with your spear first.

I would have cautioned you not to choose that god had I known. :) His thing is decks of cards-its a very different way to play the game and not for the beginner. :) And some of the cards can be nasty. Took the opportunity and paid for it with Octowizzy2's life. :( Was doing quite well actually and then the bad boys started showing up-orc warlords and knights-I kept them confused with the cloud, but couldn't seem to do enough damage with the poison to put them away then got semi surrounded when I didn't move up to fill the empty space before a corridor and that was it. But it was worth it to see what was in the bailey for future characters.

So I start Octowizzy3 and after picking up a short sword of venom on level 1 of the dungeon, I find a spellbook, which would be the first I've found in this challenge. I take a few steps closer and boom there's an altar of Trog. He hates magic and loves to destroy spellbooks. Including this one. :(

Well the pain doesn't last long. I move quickly down to level 3 and soon find gnolls and Ijyb or however he spells it. I try dragging a gnoll up the stairs, and he hits me twice...with a cursed 0/-3 halberd and I'm dead. :(

ah too bad. I almost think the difficulty of player ghosts need to be tweaked a bit-they seem tougher than named mobs most of the time.

Indeed they were.

Octodysseus IV makes it to the fifth floor before getting sniped by a centaur archer. Had a nice +3+2 Trident of Distortion, and a Ring of Wizardry.

He's my highest score so far at... 586 (embarrassing)

Yeah its Xom, the crazy insane god, so of course his altar is going to be crazy and insane too. :) There were some weird looking walls or whatever around the altars? Make sure you check for traps next to them cause he likes to laugh at things like that.

Centaurs are nasty-but a Mephitic Cloud spell should have confused him long enough to get close for hand...er tentacle to hand combat or to run away/get into a better position to distance attack.

good luck with the next version.

Ooof that just horrible luck-what happened with the spell exploding around you? Did you accidently cast it on yourself or did it hit a wall in front of you that you didn't see? Usually you get a warning if the spell is going to bounce off something in front of you and hit you.

I hit f...where it targetted the jackal across the room. The second time I doublechecked because I forgot about that. But no I was SURE I did it right. And the cure spell failling 5 times. That is NOT bad luck. SOmething caused that. Something shitty. I wonder if something I had did it. Do shields and things cause spells to fail?

Because spell failure was what happened. The really bad kind. Cause the cure poison spells they actually made me sick each time.

Okay a lot of possibilities from looking at the morgue file and from what you said, but I don't know enough about some thing I'm going to talk about to know for sure.

1-You've got a cursed large shield on which may be effecting your spell failure rates-look at your failure rates on your three spells-all very high including mephitic cloud at 100% failure.

2-I think you correctly targetted with mephitic cloud but you failed to cast it-I'm assuming you were at the 100% failure rate when you cast it, but can't tell for sure from the morgue file. The first level of miscast failure (there are three for each school of spell) casts the cloud on you instead. However the morgue file does not show you as confused as you would be if hit by the cloud-that would mean you could not cast spells at all. You also take poison damage.

3-You are glowing. that means you are magically contaminated. That comes from miscasting too many spells as well as other means. It says in the morgue file that you are only slightly contaminated, so it shouldn't be having too much effect on you-do you remember what color the word glow was during this final battle-because there are levels of contamination and the higher levels are very bad-mutations and damage to you. I am too unfamiliar with contamination to know how much of an effect it might have had on you here. Maybe someone with more experience with this can chime in here? If you get contaminated from miscasting a spell, its always a good idea to rest until it goes away if you can.

Yet another reason I stay away from pure spellcasters-using up your food to cast spells and then things like contaminations and miscasts. :)

dzilla77

Actually the large shield would be affecting spell failure rates significantly (regardless of the fact that it is cursed).

So saving it for a named dude.

btw, I ewnt downstairs and found a named person that cast magic again. I ran like hell upstairs and they followed me. What saved my like? My scroll of blinking! I was then able to cure up and then run BACK downstairs down a different stiar. Whew!

Highlights. Tewrence chased me around and I ran and ran and ran and just gave up and went downstairs. I employed that tactics twice. So glad there are easy monsters on ALL the levels.

Got chased back UP by Eustice or whatever blinking aroundl

Got lotsa hitpoints and spells then went back up and SCREW YOU TERRENCE! SUCK CLOUD!

Orc Wizard/Orc Priest Orc Wrrior group. Clouded to the max. They stumbled over each other droping their weapons and I stung them while confused then threw things at them.

Skybeast was interesting. Glad I took it from afar.

Centaur...this was scary. I poisonauraed him in a corridor which poisoned me. Then when he madvanced and hit me I read a scroll of fear to drive him away! then hit him again with spells

Hill Giant. ...Luckily I was far away from him when I noticed him and it was open (unlike the centaur). I clouded him many times and Stung him. He approached once I hit him BAM but he toko me to half. SCROLL OF FEAR again. Then Clouded again. threw things but once he got to red I just went up and hit him.

My short sword of draining was awesome oh yes I got that off of DEAD MOFO TERRENCE!

I went downstairs and almost immediately found a Jelly. EEK! I really thought I was dead as I was out of fear scrolls. It didn't seem to take much damage from poison spells and it did acid damgae. I ran. ranrnaran up a corridor. At the other end was a water moccasin who sandwiched me in. I stopped and thought. I was already under half. I then read a teleportation scroll. Drank my last cure potion while both were swinging and missing. Then I radiated posion too
I then teleported finally into an empty big room with scrolls.

Well...it wasn't empty. A phantom appeared. I hit him and he double hit back so I ran like hell for stairs.

Next I met a Necrophage. hahahahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHA...I was wearing an amulet of protection from corrosion! so it didn't harm me.
It would have been nasty otherwise.

Then I met ANOTHER Phantom. I CLOUDED him galore and kept running. He blinked a lot and advanced and when he did I hit him and drained him and poison auraed which would cause him to blink away. So I stung him and threw things. eventually he went down.

My last story is entitled "3 Orc Priests, 2 Orc Warrior, and a cockroach...in a narrow corridor".

Was hilarious. I was up top shooting clouds into an intersection and they kept blocking each other and falling over. Reappted sting and cloud spells. Then the best part I threw a net on top of the one in the center of the corridor. They couldn't do ANYTHING while confused. They all sat in the corridor and died....except for 2 priests. I ran out of spells.

And of course the game cheated at that point.
Instead of casting a balanced spell at me they called forth God power and took me to 5 HP in one call. Gee...okay when the game is losing it cheats....got it.
It's so nice that _I_ can do something like that when _I_ need...wait no I can't.

BTW I found shops FINALLY! but hadn't enough money.
Is there any way to sell things? I saw nothing saying I could :(

Anyway Septopus LXIII turns in my first real performance with 1825 points at 8th level

Is there anyway to destroy statues in the way?

CrimsonFox
06-26-2012, 08:45 AM
I will note that there was one misfit in the ancestry. Septopus the LIV broke ranks as he found it troubling that all the previous Venom Mages died a horrible death. So he went Summoner. It was a challenging run in itself. The first level I think was a little easier as the monsters would mostly kill everything and then only required one stab if that while the summoned creatures then go poof. Endless supply of them. Got the Imp too. 2nd level kinda changed that. Level 2 just seems to always have one big bunch of monsters in it that mages just get Malachi crunched in.

Congrats on making it to the Temple level CF! That's the first sign that you are really starting to understand the game, so well done. I can't believe you didn't go in and find a Nemelex altar. :)

You can destroy granite statues with a couple spells you aren't likely to have as a venom mage and a wand of disintegration will work as well. Be careful of non-granite statues though as they might animate and attack you.

That was a sweet crossbow artifact find for a venom mage. Too bad you didn't have bolts for it. And if you want to call forth god power yourself, play a Half-Orc Priest of Beogh-then you can Smite to your heart's content...and gain orc followers that would otherwise attack you and they can level themselves. Playing one now, pretty fun.

Jellies aren't affected by fear and other mind-related attacks, because they don't have one! Skybeasts are not fun-don't stand in water while attacking them, and don't eat any meat they leave behind unless you really want a mutation.

Only took me 63 tries ;)

Oh yeah and I can't believe I forgot about the temple. I came upon it, but then went around the outskirts of it and fled. There was something I forget what that scared me away and wanted to circumvent it. THen there was a lot of going down and upstairs business and I really completely forgot about it. Didn't even see it again accidentally to remind myself :(

Granted the Nemelex guy is the only one I've ever gotten anything from. I've tried the fire evil god, the snail slow god, and a couple others. I guessed that the good gods won't like us.

well keep telling me things you think I might need.

Granted I still play level one basically never letting up on the keys.
I run down corridors and go "oh look I just killed something I think."
I'm so bored with it. If I die fine I just start again. This game is like gambling unfortunately. I can't stop.

I think the first or second game I played I found Sif Muna and was that. Since then I have NOT found those 2 altars at ALL ANYWHERE!!!!!! :)

Always the other crazy ones. I find the fire one and the snail one a LOT. HAd a stint of finding Nemenex a lot in the 40s and 50s.

Is this for a Trog worshipper? if so, its a for abilities, then whatever letter that ability is (hit ? or *) to see which. Just don't stand on it when you do it. :) Otherwise, I can't remember-why do you want to destroy it?

And the winner is...ME! :) This looked to be a tough one for all of us-even with my winning entry I don't think I got as far down as we did in the other comps. Was this too tough for us, not very likeable/interesting, etc.?

I have some ideas for another comp, but I'd like to see more active participation if we are going to run another. Who's up for another comp and what would you like to see baring in mind our other comps (Troll Berserker, Deep Elf Ice Elementalist, Demonspawn Chaos Knight, Spriggan Stalker, Octopode Venom Mage)?

So I got a PM from CrimsonFox asking for general help with Crawl, and I thought I'd post it here (sorry if you didn't want it posted!) since he asked a lot of questions. Get advice here from those who have played it more, and for future advice for those like CF who are new to it or will give the game a try in the future.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

at this game and badly need help. Some kind of instruction and tips. I can't make any headway.

Maybe if I told you different points and you tell me how to handle these situations...

What should I be doing and how to progress through the various character levels...?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9...

What specific tactics should I be aware of on each dungeon level (as I've seen that even though things are random they are usually the same variations...)

How do I deal with...
-Named characters: Jessica, Igyl, VIncent (that fighter guy that confuses I think that's his name?), Grinder, other casters, The guy that leads the slaves,...
-The orc groups (of priest/wizard/warriors)
- poison monsters
-range throwing monsters
-monsters that blink around
-monsters that deal a ton of damage (worms, ogres, etc)

Tactics with rings, potions, scrolls, wands...how do I use a wand :(

Eating...what can and can't I eat? Should I not use spells unless I have to because of it?
I'm thinking basically ancorpse in orange or green I cannot eat because they will make me sick/poison me. White corpses are fine?

Weapon use
what weapons to use and when?
special hidden tactics I don't know about...
I have been wielding a club or short sword as soon as I can then switching to mace or flail or long sword if I find one of those. For range I throw everything I can at some things but don't use slings/bows much. actually i've never seen a bow.

Well that's a start. I'm just useless at this thing. I know that the game is random and some games are easier than others to get through but I'm just dying all the time. Haven't come close to that one good game I had. Well twice I was close to doing that and both times I got severely screwd by something.

So HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I gave CF a couple basic things until I had time to post this here and comment on it.

1-Play the tutorial mode and hints mode-it really does ease you into the game as much as you can be eased with "easier" character choices and the helpful information you get as you go along.

2-Read up on the game as much as you can-go to the Crawl Wiki at: CrawlWiki (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=CrawlWiki) There's a lot of helpful info there including a walkthrough and a strategy guide. Also check the Crawl official forums at the Tavern: Index page • The Tavern (https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/) The first three sections of the Tavern part of the board can be very useful to read as newbies and vets alike post there looking for help and a large group of people willing to help.

thanks thomkal. Yeah I was going to post it here but you saved me the hassle of doing it. I do very well but I always find something that absolutely screws me on levels 2-3 usually. Usually it's hordes of stuff and casters. Oh and food. The last great attempt I made I was doing terrific but died...BECAUSE I STARVED to death of all things. I found ZERO permanent food and the only monsters that seemed to drop carcasses were poisonous.

Altho I did follow your initial advice and played on hints mode and read the tips guide. One thing I picked up was running around corners to avoid range attacking mobs. ALthough this had the problem of getting killed by a falcion user with reach :P

Hints mode really didn't have anything strategy wise useful to say tho. At least not before I died.

I tried playing an Orc Fighter just to give myself a break. I got down to the temple level on the first try. Go figure. So I guess it's just extra hard playing the combo we were using.

A couple of thoughts from CF's post above:

1-patience and more patience. Part of the appeal of the game is that you really have to think how you are going to handle certain situations/mobs. Early on you will die...a lot. But as you begin to figure out stuff you'll quickly move through the first few dungeon levels with most characters unless you are unlucky with what you encounter. And your reward for that?...even more mobs and new areas to explore (and die horribly in)-the various portals. And you will learn from your deaths too so next time you face that named mobs you have the upperhand.

2. Running away is always a very good option and the best option in some cases. I recently had a level with two named mobs-one of which summoned all sorts of devils and undead in a pretty open dungeon level, a player ghost, and something else nasty I'm forgetting right now. I explored as much of the level as I could safely...and then went down the stairs. Some levels just aren't worth exploring fully.

3. Wands are evoked using the Capital "v" key.

4. My strategy for dealing with each dungeon level is this. Sit on the stairs after I've completed each level and look through my inventory. There's a ton of stuff in this game and you'll end up carrying a bunch of it. And you likely will forget that you are carrying certain things. If I'm playing a spell-using type, I look through my spells if I have a lot just to keep them fresh in my mind.

5. Looks like you are about to die? Check your inventory one last time. Haven't identified healing potions yet, and have some Un'ID'ed ones? Start drinking-maybe you will get a healing one or something like might which could carry the day for you...or maybe you will get paralyzed and die, but its not fun to look through your morgue file after dying and find out that you could have used something to save yourself. Check your scrolls too especially if you don't have teleport or blink yet. In the info I gave above about the devil/undead summoner, a lucky read of an un'ID'ed teleport scroll kept me alive until I could get off the level.

Well that's enough for now-please Crawl vets chime in here and help CF (and other newbies) with these issues.

Too bad there isn't a cook class which let's you cook and depoison sentient food.

well you can always play a race that can eat such foods (like trolls, ogres, and ghouls) and a non-spellcasting race so food is not such much an immediate issue.

I thi k that's why octovenom mage was so challenging. Absolutely NO armor. If they catch you you're dead. And your constant magic reliance made food a problem...plus your spells weren't instant gratification. You had to wait for things to die.

Actually playing a monster would be extremely fun.

Mummy/Vampire/Ogre/TRoll kinda thing but again without the allspellcasting problem. I like the stomach of iron idea.

thesloppy
07-02-2012, 07:03 PM
Note that the stomach of iron usually comes at some other cost. Trolls gotta eat a lot more, and vampires have to suck blood. The food mechanic can't really be avoided so much as it can be modified.

Interesting - I rarely ever have any issues with starvation. Maybe its just good luck that I always find permafood.

I seem to have problems with ghosts - most of my good characters are killed by my good character ghosts - usually because they are confusing me (and immune to my confusion spells).

One note, confusion is a very powerful condition in the game at low levels because there is not any resistance to it. I use it whenever I am confronted with spell casters or mobs.

Now, if I could just figure out how to kill ghosts. . .

Berserker, don't care what race!

Thanks for the suggestion, but the first comp we did here was a berserker, so won't be doing that one again for a while. If we wanted to do an all-combat type, I was thinking hunter, but I could be swayed to do assassin if people are into it more.

I also have a couple "out there" ideas, but given how tough this one was, likely will save them for another day.
