Because I didn't see a thread on this already. Just a mention in the 2012 MMO thread.

Beta weekend 2 just finished up last weekend and I have to say that I'm seriously impressed. I had a blast. The changes in character classes, the way skills work, the entirely different type of questing, the dynamic world...it's a pretty different take on the whole MMO genre. And it all seems to work well together. Never mind the WvWvW matches on those HUGE maps. The fact that it doesn't charge you $15 a month is also a serious plus.

Anyone else in this or planning on getting it?

Also, if you're going to play, I want to throw a big shout-out to my guild - The Hammerfist Clan. It's an adult-only casual guild that's certainly large enough to tackle the content, but relaxed enough to cater to any play-style. The people have been great to play with. If you're looking for a guild, I'd suggest checking out these folks.

I'm not trying to be hyperbolic about this, but I'd urge ya'll to just go ahead and pre-purchase before the next beta weekend. It's really that good.

Waiting on reviews, but it's looking like I'll be picking this up. I didn't love the first as much as most, but I still had a lot of fun playing it.

One of my friends has been filling me in on the GW2 happenings. It sounds like they are doing a lot of good things.

One of the cool things I like is that I can be guilded with him and play with him on his server and if I want to hop over and play with FOFC on another server, I can do it without any issues. So, I get to play with the same toon with anyone I want to. I can go back and forth between guilds as long as the guilds don't revoke my membership.

It sounds very cool, but I am going to wait until the game is released before I play it. I don't want my first experience to be a beta.

I have thought about it. But I just feel like it would drag me in, then the weekend would end, and I'd sit salivating like a hungry dog.

I've read other players say, that while they loved it, it probably isn't close to showtime yet. Like, not close enough to get the July-August release like many are hoping. Agree, disagree?

*THIS IS A RUMOR*

My friend is on the Guild War (original version, mind) test crew. They keep bugging one of the developers about when will Guild Wars 2 be released. He would never say, but then gave them this: "I look forward to giving this to my kids around the holidays." It might be a good long while yet (say November/December).

Some Korean financial docs were discovered a couple of days ago that suggested the release was "before Thanksgiving". I'm betting late September.

And yes, I'm salivating like a hungry dog after the last beta weekend.

I really tried to get into the original Guild Wars, but was frustrated by a couple things. One was when you walked out of the starter town into an instance things almost immediately burrowed out of the ground and attacked, no matter what level you were (I think they always stayed level one). You couldn't just ignore them either. The instance would reset when you went back in the starter village. And the whole instance was like that, and while it sounds good on paper it really began to annoy me. Is GW2 any different?

Question for Blackadar

I watched the video on combat and it seems a bit like Diablo, would you classify the combat that way or is it closer to Rift or Wow style?

Question for Blackadar

I watched the video on combat and it seems a bit like Diablo, would you classify the combat that way or is it closer to Rift or Wow style?

I'm not sure if this is going to answer your question or not because I'm not sure what differences you're wanting to highlight. Combat in Diablo va RIFT is very, very different. At first it feels like WoW/RIFT, but then you begin to realize it's not like that at all. It's more dynamic than typical MMO combat because you can fire and move at the same time. Unlike WoW or RIFT, where you have to stay in place for anything beyond an insta-cast talent, you move and fire in GW2. So you're going to kite a lot of enemies...and if you're squishy, you're going to have to learn how to do so because 3 mobs of the same level will stomp someone into the ground if you just stand there. Projectiles/spells can be dodged as well. Just because someone lets loose with an arrow doesn't mean you can't get out of the way. It's tricky and only possible at longer distances, but it does add flavor to the combat.

Unlike RIFT or WoW, you don't have a bunch of talents at once. For most classes, there's a maximum of 9 (I think) - but 5 of those depend on the weapons you have equipped. You get 3 skills from the main weapon and 2 from the offhand weapon. If you have a two handed weapon, it gives you 5 skills. They're very different depending on the weapon. Let's take a Guardian, a melee class, for example:

I'll start out with a Staff (2h weapon). So my weapon skills are:

- Wave of Wrath - A shockwave AOE
- Orb of Light - Single target damage, blindness and burning skill
- Symbol of Swiftness - Grants a speed boost to nearby allies (including me) and damages foes (AOE)
- Line of Warding - Creates a line that foes cannot cross
- Martyr - Takes debuffs from allies, puts them on me and gives me a major boost to damage, regen, swiftness and other talents.

That's it? Nah. See, I can switch between two sets of weapons in a fight. So I can throw down my AOEs and buffs with that and then switch to a Sword and Board. Suddenly, I can do the following:

- Sword of Wrath - Basic sword attack
- Flashing Blade - Teleport to an enemy and blind nearby foes
- Zealot's Defense - Block projectiles, minor AOE damage
- Shield of Judgement - Major damage to nearby foes and protects nearby allies
- Shield of Absorption - Knockback and blocks projectiles

That doesn't count my other 4 skills, which stay consistent (or at least until I want to change them). So I can start off as support/AOE damage, then leap to the defense of someone getting overwhelmed, shield them to get them out of danger and kill their target(s).

Now consider I can equip:

Sword (1 handed, 3 skills)
Mace (1 handed)
Scepter (1 handed)
Great Sword (2 handed, has 5 skills)
Hammer (2 handed)
Staff (2 handed)

The offhands are a torch, focus (trinket) or a shield. Each of these gives two skills. That's a lot of combinations, even before we get to the 4 skills we can pick from various lists (around 15-20 total, unlocked as someone levels).

FYI, I'd probably start with a scepter/torch and swap to a 2h sword in many fights.

So combat is pretty dynamic and probably falls more in line with Diablo than WoW/RIFT, but it's really different than both. I hope that helps.

Great answer, thank you. I was hoping there was some strategy to it and not just mash buttons as fast as you can and it sounds like you have a lot to think about, while having a fast paced combat experience that requires strategic thinking.

Starting to draw me in and I am glad GW 2 is charging more for the game up front and not doing the monthly subscription, more likely to keep me playing since I have months during the year when I get a lot less free time than others.

The more I read about this game and check the videos, it is really looking like a breath of fresh air MMO wise, kind of surprised it is not getting more buzz here.

Combat was my big apprehesion and I have watched enough video now that I am actually looking forward to the new style.

Events and a more open quest section are also quite appealing.

Just wondering how many would be interested in starting a FOFC guild and of maybe the guild you are in would take us in Blackadar?

From a mod on the GMG forums.

Green Man Gaming Forums / Technical Support / Guild Wars 2 Confirmation was sent without the activation key! (http://forums.greenmangaming.com/topic/2328/)

Yes - just to repeat what has already been posted - everyone having the same issue please file a Support ticket (via the "Submit a Request" option on the Support Page [greenmangaming.zendesk.com]) - they will be able to sort this out for You.

Just as a heads up - while the Support usually responds within the same working day they don't always work on weekends, so don't worry if it takes them a bit longer to get back to You (as it's Friday night over there now) - I'm sure You'll all receive your keys either way.
-----
The 404 error means that the store page has been taken down. If they have run out of keys (while I haven't seen any official confirmation for this yet, it's quite probable that this is the reason they have taken down the store page), then yes - You will be provided with them as soon as they acquire the next batch from ArenaNet. As always - once You've made the purchase You are guaranteed to receive the game. As for when they will be able to restock - that information will have to come from a GMG staff member - if I see that info anywhere I'll make sure to post it in this thread.

Trying to avoid the Asura and plant people starting zones cause not sure my computer can handle that many people at once. Going to try a human Guardian now as that likely will be my main once the game goes live. Will be named Kallor (or Thomkal) if you want to hang out. There is a portal (Lion's Gate?) that lets you move to the starting zones of the other races so you can meet up with your buddies.

Edit: Kallor Brightblade, cause just Kallor was taken.

Played for an hour during lunch with a Human Ranger, have to say first impressions are good.

I had to play around with different key combinations to get my movement skils fluid in combat, though that is still a work in progress.

I really like the dynamic events and the quest system. Basically just fight, help, collect until the the job is done and the cooperative part is great. Much better than the standard collect 10 Troll toes or kill x amount of bandits. In an event you just fight until your side wins and the event succeeds or you lose and fail. Makes for a fast paced, fun experience and you can be as active as you like, but there is always something happening.

Just hit level 4 and found a precise short bow on a bandit, rapid shot is awesome. Still have 2 skills to unlock with that weapon, but I am thinking I am going to focus on ranged combat. The Axe is nice and Hunters call is pretty cool with the off hand warhorn, but I really like moving around and sniping.

Also had no lag at all and the game world is very well done. This could be a keeper.....especially with no monthly fee!

BYU 14

Played about 7 hours total so far and have to say I am really impressed with how smooth this is for a beta.

I have yet to see any lag, even in the big battles that have 30+ people taking on a boss. This was one issue I always had with Rift as it would often get laggy in these big battles and it was hard to keep track of your Character.

Continue to be impressed with the dynamic events, did one yesterday where we could not stop Skrit from stealing logging tools from a town. After this failed, another event started and we had to go to their hideout and recover the stolen tools, then after that was complete a third event was to escort a demolition expert to blow their hideout up. All flowed really well.

Have not died much in fact if anything a lost of the game seems a bit easy outside of the indivdual instances that have been related to my characters storyline, one of which took 4 tries to complete. I seen complaints that the difficulty is not what the first two betas where, so it appears they are still looking for the right balance between challenging and frustrating/easy. The good news is you complete an in game survey after each event/instance that lets you rate a number of things. I also took a game to date survey when I hit level 10 with my Ranger.

I am pretty confident they will have it balanced by release and I am impresssed with the way they are soliciting as much feedback as possible. You have to complete these surveys before you can move on.

Agree with Chinaski that it is like a lot of other MMO's in some areas, but the events really standout and I like the fact that you have to be a bit more strategic in combat. I think if they up the difficulty just a bit to where you feel threatened more or die if you do not fight smartly things will be fine.

Two thumbs up from me so far.

Since I'm the enabler who started this thread and who played GW2 and SWTOR in beta, I'll answer...

Simply put, I don't think you will. Or if you do, it won't be for the same reasons. When I played SWTOR in beta for a few hours, I blasted the game as derivative, stale and not very much fun. While the stories were decent, that wasn't enough to keep up with the limited exploration, the boring questing, the bland visuals and the general feeling of "been there, done that". I was blasted by a number of fanboys who were convinced that SWTOR was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I stuck to my guns.

Now I don't have quite the same expectations with GW2 as I did with SWTOR, but I was truly blown away with my time in beta. For me, it does move away from some stale MMO conventions. The lack of static questing was fresh, the "no kill stealing" encouraged cooperation and the way skills/talents were connected to weapons (which could be switched during combat) gave combat a dynamic that I've not encountered in a MMO. The game felt very new and very fresh.

Plus, with no sub fee, it's not like other MMOs. With this, you can walk away for a month and come back when you feel like it.

What I like so far (just by reading, listening to my friend drone on constantly, not by playing yet):

Lack of the Trinity: Genius idea. If you no longer have "must have" classes, then everyone can play who they want, and there should be no "wanting for a tank, healer, etc." for any dungeons. We'll see if that actually works out.

Open ended questing: Going to be interesting to see how this works, but seems like a good idea.

Skill levels adjusted by zone: Higher level characters are weakened when in lower level areas. So, you can easily help out someone of a lower level, without it being the higher level character squashing everything.

What I don't like:

Races suck: Don't like any of them besides humans. I maybe can see playing a Norn. The rest just seem stupid.

Story: Never liked Guild Wars mainly because I never liked the story. Maybe this game will surprise me and improve the story elements. But then, I'm not very hopeful.

Those are the three I'm looking at. Played a human thief today for about 3 hours. The game has a different feel. Much better than GW (but that's really not saying that much). Anyone knows how the pre-order (head-start) works? I pre-ordered GW2 from Amazon. How will I be able to play head-start or even release day if the game won't arrive until the Sept. 5th (I used the free shipper and 09/05 is the estimated delivery date)? I didn't see an option for a d/l version of the game on Amazon so I believe I'll just be receiving the hard copy of the game.

EDIT: Nevermind - I found the digital version on Amazon. I just cancelled my original pre-order and ordered the digital...

So what class are you guys going to start off with? I played an Engineer in beta (got to lvl 15 or 16) and I really enjoyed the class. Was thinking about trying a Guardian to start. I don't have the time to lvl up a main with multiple Alt's so I'm trying to decide which class to start with.

I'll be playing a Guardian for sure, but I can't ever just play one character class in MMO's, so I'll have a Ranger for sure, probably a Mesmer too. That leaves (I think) 2 character slots open to experiment with.....

Everyone who pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 will enjoy three full days of Headstart Access. The three-day Headstart Access will officially begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 25th. However, please note that in order to ensure we’re fully prepared for that fateful hour we may bring servers online up to 3 hours prior. The overflow isn't bad :) You can play the game just fine there, but (I think) friends can't travel to it to find and play with you. You eventually will be asked if you want to move to the real server when your turn in the queue comes up.

Was reading forums and such and yeah it does look like launch went well initially with many people able to play straight through for about 7 hours-then us Americans woke up ready to play and the servers weren't up to the load.

All races in the game-five of them, can play any class without restrictions. Each starts in a different area to begin the game, but there is a gate within the city each starts near that will take you to any other race's starting zone.

Each race does have its own racial skills that you can acquire during the course of the game.

Yeah that annoys me too. I would like to know the reason why they chose this route and I'm guessing it has something to do with world v world balance. I just read on their site that they are going to have some kind of "guesting" available where you can play on a friend's server. I think eventually they will remove this restriction because a lot of people are going to complain about it.

Had that happen last night, but was able to transfer over a bit later, process is smooth, took like 45 seconds and I was on the new server. I think they will gradually increase world caps as they see the servers can handle it.

Only annoying thing for me thus far is the trading post issues.

Guild Wars 2 First Impressions:

Over the weekend I got to really jump into GW2 for the first time since Beta 2. It's been a while. Here's some off-the-cuff impressions of my journey to level 21:

Technical: Not bad for a launch. Not bad at all. They brought the servers up promptly at midnight, which was 3 hours early. They were slammed, but it worked well. I managed to create a few characters and while I didn't get all the names I wanted, I got most of the important ones. One thing about GW2 is that names are unique to the game and not the server. So there won't be 2 different "Blackadar" characters on two different servers. I think they need a random name generator, because good names are already scarce. The overflow server concept worked well. I found myself often in the overflow, but it didn't prevent me from logging in and having fun. Much, much better option than queues. The only grumble is that you can't queue up for WvWvW from an overflow server, so if you're kicked during a match, you have to log back in, get through the overflow server and then queue back up for WvWvW.

Saturday morning the game was down for an extended period - I tried getting on about 7AM and quit about 9:30 AM and never got on. But Saturday evening and most of the day Sunday I was able to play with no issues. I did get kicked out once on Sunday evening in a WvWvW match, but that was the only disconnect.

The Auction House was down all yesterday, so I can't comment on that.

Graphical: It runs like a champ on my less-than-optimal video card at high resolutions. I'm constantly getting 30-40FPS with high textures. The environments are gorgeous and so are the monsters. It's not afraid to show you how beautiful it is, either. When you find those overlook points, you get a slow, sweeping view of the entire area. Only then do you realize how amazing it looks. Most of the spell animations are pretty good, though some could use some work - my guardian spells are a bit bland. I'd like to see more visible shields and stuff like that. Some of the fire spells look great.

Even with major battles in WvWvW, the game ran fine. I had very little stutter or frame rate loss, even with a lot going on. It did get choppy in a couple of places, but that's to be expected with so much going on. I didn't notice much of a difference between high and medium textures, so dropping the textures is a way to boost the frame rate without sacrificing beauty.

Sound: I've always thought that sound was especially important in MMOs. Spells, battles and weapons all get more oomph from the sounds which go with those actions when there's good effects. Guild Wars 2 doesn't disappoint. Whistling arrows are especially neat and the impact of a two-handed hammer is different than the swoosh of a sword. Very well done. I don't really remember the music, which is probably a good thing. Usually memorable music in a MMO means I'm turning it off.

PvE Gameplay: It may be evolutionary and not revolutionary, but it's an improvement. Running around and working on dynamic events is vastly more enjoyable than "kill x ogres", even if a few events boil down to killing ogres. Some of the events/quests weren't great (one in particular about spraying blue stuff on some frog people was very confusing), but most were good if not great.

What is revolutionary is what the quests do to the community. Because there's no kill-stealing, node-stealing or XP loss for group kills, the community instinctively works together. In any other game, if you die, you might as well resurrect at the spawn point because people will just step over your body to get to the next mob. Here, people will take the time to resurrect you because you can help them as soon as you're up. It's an awesome dynamic and the game feels like it has the old EQ or start-of-WoW kind of community - cooperative, not competitive. There were only a couple of quests that I did where I felt I was competing against others.

When you get tired of event-driven questing, then you hit your story line. They're as good as a good SWTOR story and give your character a sense of purpose or help make you feel unique - a difficult thing in an MMO. I've enjoyed every one of my story quests greatly.

It says something that when I was PvPing last night and leveling, I was thinking about "out-leveling" the content and I was a bit concerned about that. Then I realized that with down ranking levels so they're appropriate for the content and so forth, I haven't missed a thing. I'm going back to PvE more and I don't care if I'm level 21, 25 or 30. I'll still go back and do some of those level 16 events. Why? Because they're fun and I still get credit. When the makers of GW2 talked about a different leveling experience for every character, I didn't believe that at first. Now I do. Because once you're level 10 or so, how you level and where you level is mainly up to you. Want to go explore the beginning Charr area as a level 20 Norn? Go do it. You'll get plenty of XP and have a blast doing it. For the first time, I don't have to go from zone to zone as dictated by my level. The only advantage to leveling up is that I can just go to more places (though the higher level places will have better gear/money rewards).

PvP Gameplay: I only played WvWvW, so that's what I'm basing this off of. I am not a fan of PvP. I'm generally pretty bad at it, I get killed a bunch, pick squishy support classes that are no fun in PvP and so forth. And the first hour or so in WvWvW, I didn't have much fun. I ran out, got rolled, died, repeat. Then I started to figure it out a bit. What my role was. What was going on. And I'm about to pay GW2 a major compliment - this is what Warhammer Online should have been. Considering how much I loved WAR when it came out, that's high praise. There's just so much to do. The maps are huge. Want to help the team by securing some supplies? Get a small squad together and do it. Want to take some keeps? Get in with the zerg. Want to help the team and solo a bit? Go kill some of the monsters so that other monsters side with your team. Want to just run around and look at the vistas? Do it (though you need to avoid the zerg). Siege weapons work wonderfully and I had an absolute blast playing WvWvW last night. Yeah, some classes are more powerful than others, but this isn't a 1-on-1 game.

Technically, it worked great too. Even with dozens of players on my screen, I didn't have major problems with frame rate. I didn't get pulled through walls. I didn't fall through the earth. 3 Bright Wizards couldn't control the map. I was able to just have fun.

Crafting: I didn't do enough to really comment, though finding mats is a bit of a challenge. Looks interesting and people seem to be getting some decent stuff by crafting.

Overall: Now these are first impressions. I have no idea how the game holds up in 2 weeks or 2 months. But I've been burned out playing MMOs the last couple of years and with the Secret World and SWTOR, I was able to dismiss those during betas as not worthy of my time. GW2 feels different at this stage. I want to level...but for the first time ever in a MMO, I don't need to. I want to get better with my guardian, but I wouldn't mind taking a couple of other classes out for a test drive. I want to do some PvE instances, but there's so much to do in the world that I'm not in any hurry. Right now, I'm simply having fun. The endgame may suck. I don't know at this point. But I wouldn't mind leveling another character in this game, because it's such a great experience. And with no $15/mo fee, I can take a break and come back at my leisure. Right now, this game gets two huge thumbs-up from me.

Spot on review, There is enough variety to jump back and forth between PVE, PVP, WVW, Crafting and exploring and you can level doing them all, so it stays fresh....Plus you can take a month off and not worry about sub fees as you mentioned. Sounds like they have DLC set up for a few years to come as well. so this could really challenge WOW at some point down the road and if not, should at least be a solid, sustainable business model, which is good for the player.

Overflow queues are frustrating. I'd be OK with them as a solution to server overloads due to spikes in traffic. But their existence is a matter of course on a lowly populated server, on both initial join and any time you leave and re-enter the zone. I don't get it. Poor design.

Much like the being locked into 1 server issues, I expect this to get changed.

The game itself seems stellar.

1. I doubt your server is that lowly populated. All of 'em were pretty full over the weekend.

2. Remember that everyone is pretty much in the same handful of zones right now. So even if the server isn't full, if the Norn starting area is full of newbies, then you're going into the overflow server if you start a Norn.

Beats queues by a country mile in my book.

When I signed up it was 1 of 2 servers listed as low and I was dumped into a queue right off.

Beats queues by a country mile in my book.

I agree totally, I just wonder if they consider them such a better solution they rely on them too much. I've yet to play a game where I was in a queue 100% of the time like I am in this one.

Nice review there Black, generally agree with it. One thing I wanted to point out in regards to character names-you can give your character a last name while using a first name that has already been taken, so you can get around that restriction.

Technical: Well it didn't start out well for me as I first tried to play during the long period on Saturday morning period when the game was down. I had just one crash since then and got right back on. The Auction House being down apparently the whole headstart is not good. I heard/read about some problems with grouping and buying gems too. Other than the Auction House, a good launch generally.

The overflow servers are genius really. Would it be nice if you could pull your friend into the overflow server with you? Sure. Is it annoying to leave a zone you are on the regular server with, come back and find yourself on the overflow server-and likely separated from your friends again? Sure. But being able to play instead of sitting for minutes (hours?) looking at a queue screen? Just fantastic and worth the hassles it does cause.

Graphical-I'm playing on a old computer currently with Integrated graphics so as you can imagine my FPS are pretty low-usually in the teens. Hardly have had any lag even with large crowds around with all those particle effects flying around. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to play at all, so obviously I'm pretty happy here.

I love to explore and look at the scenery in MMO's and have had some wow moments like seeing most of the home cities for each race-and I checked out Lion's Arch for the first time yesterday-just popped my head in, can't wait to look around there-the cities are just huge too-you can lose yourself quite easily for a couple hours if you need a change of scenery/activity. I love the Sylvari home city and starting area the most so far. Don't want to spoil it, but go there and take an elevator down a level or two-it is a very unique experience.

Sound: Great music and sounds-I catch myself listening to the music from time to time, and I like the NPC villagers talking as you go by-most is just fluff-some you need to pay attention to as it may lead to a dynamic event-watch out too for the NPC's who run up to you and hail you-they will then tell you about a heart quest or dynamic event-or something start a dynamic event right there.

PVE Gameplay: Agree with much of what Bucc says, but have to say that dynamic events and hearts "quests" tend to get a bit boring quickly once I've done them the first time. But the first time you do them for the first part is sweet. It's nice with heart quests that they give you multiple ways you can contribute to them-some violent, others not. I find the Asura ones the least successful for me-maybe because the feel isn't right for me-technology in a fantasy world.

And yeah no kill-stealing, node-stealing, or XP loss for group kills is wonderful, as is the level scaling. They need more nodes though in the starting areas.

PvP gameplay: I don't do PvP normally, but am actually intrigued to try it with World v World, so that's a first for me in any MMO.

Crafting: I like to craft, but I'm not a hardcore crafter-I'd rather be out questing. I didn't craft in the beta just took a quick look, but I'm trying several of them now with my alts. I love the idea behind the discovery mode, but so far I've only found one recipe that way. I'm unsure if I need to craft components and then try to discover with what I have or I need to buy materials at the vendor in the crafting areas and then use discovery rather than just use what I get from mobs to discover. They need to pump up the amount of certain drops from mobs like vials of weak blood-seems to be needed in many recipes and I've found just 2 so far.

Personal Story-So far I like them, but I haven't gone far in any of them. Good variety, but I wonder how different each say human stories are from each other. I'm enjoying the story with my human guardian-I chose the raised by nobles route, and the first part involved him going to his house and getting a hero's welcome-could talk to all the guests at the party, see the outside of my house and surrounding grounds before all the action takes place. Not as interesting initially was my sylvani ranger's story of dreaming of a green knight but picks up after you meet him (trying not to spoil) and you go meet someone to tell you more of his story-that is if you survive what happens there :) I would suggest that unless you are well-geared and have learned a lot of your chosen weapon's skills, you wait till you are a level higher than the suggested level to start each stage of your story.

Overall: I like it a lot-they've really rejuvenated the genre for me which was getting pretty stale. I worry that it will get boring at mid-upper levels if I need to repeat dynamic events/hearts quests several times, but we will see. The game will likely look and play a lot differently in a year than it does now but for now its a good debut and I would recommend it anyone who likes MMO's.

Thomkal,

You and your group can join each other on overflow servers. If you right-click their portrait in the group window, there is an option to join them.

I don't know how this works, completely though. I do know that last night when my guild was doing the jumping puzzle, we were all on the same overflow using the method I described above. When it came time to transfer over, we all declined to make sure we stayed together.

When I signed up it was 1 of 2 servers listed as low and I was dumped into a queue right off.

I agree totally, I just wonder if they consider them such a better solution they rely on them too much. I've yet to play a game where I was in a queue 100% of the time like I am in this one.

Yep, I imagine your server (or those areas) were quite busy. Reading Thom's link above, Guild Wars 2 had 400,000 people playing online at the same time over the weekend.

Get on with a group of us Hammerfist Clan folks on TC. TC may be getting stomped lately, but I'm not bragging when I say we've accomplished some things when we've gotten together.

Monday night I got a group of about 12-15 HFC together for Eternal. From a server standpoint, we were getting stomped and in last place. An hour and a half later, we had taken back the lumbermill, 3 keeps, the ogre area and were actually thinking about assaulting a main base before they shut down the WvW area. We were just about to take over 2nd place when they shut us down.

Everyone tends to follow the crowd and since there were enough of us, we had a bunch of folks just tagging along.

At one point, someone asked, "where do we go now?"
Someone replied, "follow the zerg."
I retorted, "we are the zerg."

Sure enough, our group of 12-15 had turned into a force of about 30-40. It was an awesome evening of PvP...so get in with us!

I also play on the Tarnished Coast server. I am not in the Hammerfist Clan.

Only up to level 17, and just got done playing a bit of WvWvW for about an hour in Eternal. I am a terrible PvP, but I had fun. Even managed to pick up 5 PKs by using one of those arrow shooters on top of a keep. We managed to take two forts and two supply camps while I was playing and also the Hylek camp. When I left we were back down to one fort and the Hylek camp.

I usually concentrate on healing downed allies when with a group, or using ranged attacks. Also, I will sometimes go off on my own and run into a group of enemies. Then I try an lead them on a chase away from the main action. I figure if I can distract 4-5 opponents for awhile then I am helping a bit. Diving under water is great when I got a group following me, I can usually keep them busy for about 5 minutes before my death. :)

Gotta agree with this. And with no monthly subscription, you can play at your own pace. So you just need to budget or lay out the initial purchase. I bought my digital copy thru Amazon. They were offering a $5 credit for a future game purchase. That was the "cheapest" I could find it.

How's the Elementalist dps? is it a burst type dps or dot type ?

Like most of Guild Wars 2 professions, dps varies. You have four different elements to choose from two of which you start the game with (fire, water), the other two you get pretty quickly (air, earth). Each have their own characteristics-fire has many burning dot, water and air more burst. Earth has more of a mix. Each element also has a secondary function-fire has more area of effect attacks, water has some chilling and vulnerable attacks-slow movement and take more damage with future attacks. Some air attacks can blind-next attack misses, some earth attacks cause bleeding dot-some cause immobility. All depends on how you want to play the profession.

Wow and I thought the Diablo 3 AH Interface was lacking... I just tried this out to try to buy some low level armor for my warrior. The level restriction didn't work, so no way to limit the search to my level or below, no way to limit the search to just heavy armor, or max cost, or any sort of stats... I've had bad luck with heavy armor dropping and I'm dying kinda quick, but I didn't have the patience to try to sift through that shit to buy anything.

Is there any mention of this being a priority to improve perhaps?

For those who aren't anal completionists like me: "completing" each zone is highly recommended. Once you find all of the points of interest, waypoints, vistas and earn the skill points in a zone, you get a reward chest with a bunch of really nice stuff in it.

I usually clear out the zone except for the damn Vistas. I can't stand trying to locate and actually getting to the damn things. I think I've died more times trying to "jump" to the Vistas ;)

Vince, Pt. II

I've definitely died more going for vistas than in actual gameplay, that's for sure. I gotta say though, the vistas may be my favorite part of the game. There's just something cool about the developers saying "hey, we created this world and it's awesome. Stop a moment and enjoy it."

Just remember there's already a great, casual guild on TC - The Hammerfist Clan - that has a few FOFC members already in it. I've been a member for a while and I'm continually impressed with the membership and their willingness to help folks.

Hammerfist Gaming | A mature gaming community. (www.hammerfistclan.com)

Just be prepared to answer fun/dumb/interesting questions during your application process.

Get in before next Monday (the app process does take a few days due to the repeated questions) and I'm leading a WvW guild run at 8 PM EST. Everyone in the guild is invited - we're just going to have a good time and take over a couple of keeps if we can.

I'm approved and ready to contribute ;)

No joke. And some of the jump puzzles are annoyingly difficult. Anyone done the one in Lion's Arch for the chest? Grrrrr...

The vistas are easy. I don't think I have died trying to get any of them.

The jumping puzzles on the other hand....

So far I've got completion on the Asura home city, Sylvari home city and first Sylvari zone. The hardest jump puzzle I've done to date is the one at the Spiral in the Sylvari starter zone.

Anyone know what gets guild influence? Any xp I get does that transfer over to influence for the guild?

I think mostly dynamic events. WvW activity does. The guild gets 10 points per character logged in on any day as well. And anything you do with a guild member in a group increases the influence given. We received 140 points on finishing AC story-mode for example.

I went into WvWvW briefly last night, I had just hit 19 and only had level 20+ quests available. I followed the crowd, killed a couple NPCs, beat down a door and helped take a keep. I couldn't quite figure out the big picture while trying to just keep up with people running around the map, but my first impression is that it seems like it may be pretty well laid out as long as things happen to generate actual player conflict (as opposed to just trading keeps back and forth without ever seeing an enemy) pretty frequently. I got my level, saw one big fight starting but felt way out of my league, and left after a couple deaths.

Anyway, my question here... as a melee, is there a /stick command or something like that to try to help you lock on to an opponent who is trying to strafe/dodge a lot? In a crowded fight a couple times I felt like the guy I was trying to kill could just take 2 steps back, my character stops attacking, and with all of the action going on I don't recognize this very quickly and am at a severe disadvantage.

I rolled a melee type last night and wondered the same thing. it is very hard to tell who your target is in the chaos of the zerg during a PvE event.

Vince, Pt. II
09-07-2012, 05:11 PM
I think they need to improve the indicator for your target a little. I have the same problem in some world events in PvE, and I've got a ton of bleeding edge raid experience as melee in WoW.

After some reading I learned that if you stop moving you'll auto-face your target, so that will help with strafing and sideways dodging a good bit, but as far as a DAOC style /stick command if your target simply goes backwards, it doesn't seem like there's anything. I'm sure it'll be fine with practice, seems like a bit of a disadvantage though.

In most of the big zerg stuff though, it looks like melee will just be fodder, so I'll be using rifle/bow a ton on my warrior and look for spots to melee in smaller skirmishes.

This. Only the guardian is really stuck in melee for the most part (maybe the thief). This game really encourages weapons switching with range/melee combo. And one should be heavy AOE versus one more a single target focus.

I'm wondering does this game do this a lot? I hope so as it reminded me of Morrowind. :)

To ALL: If you apply to Hammerfist Clan, you're going to get questions back. Some will be game related. Some will be entirely random. Some won't even make much sense. They're testing your humor, your attitude and your desire to actually be a part of a closer-than-normal guild. It's up to you to keep checking the application and respond back to what's been asked. Have fun with it, because the app process can be and is supposed to be pretty comical.

OK, I put in an app for the guild and will be moving to TC is accepted, as well as leaving my current guild. Good folks in my current guild, but it seems to be cliquish, not in a bad way, just small groups of folks who player other games together and don't quite come together as a whole guild.

Plus will be nice to play with folks from FOFC if accepted.

I managed to get through Ascolonian Catacombs last night. It was cool to get into a dungeon, but I don't think it was anything special.

One of the difference I see from other MMOs is that there was less trash, but the trash was was harder to kill and it took longer to kill them.

I do like that I can die, rez at a waypoint and get back to the action quickly. My group didn't wipe at all.

Having an anvil at the beginning of the dungeon was a good idea for repairing after you've died a few times.

I don't know, I haven't played my thief too much (which is weird, because that's ALWAYS the archetype I play in these games). Most places I've read about builds use Sword/dagger with a short bow weapon swap. For Thieves.

Dola -

So I've finished learning all my weapon skills for my Elementalist, and my enthusiasm for the game has taken a huge hit. I'm not ready to write it off (the game is still beautiful and fun to explore), but I'm not as gung-ho about simply playing the game as I was before while trying to learn all my skills.

This - the traits are what make each Ele class different (support, healing, ect.) I have unlocked my elite traits a while ago but @ lvl 44 I have yet to open any of my 30 point traits yet. I'm working on it ;)

What I love about the Ele class is switching from a damage (fire), to air/earth (support) and healing (air) role all in the same battle. Makes for the most unique class I have ever played in a RPG. Good times ;)

I look forward to playing WvWvW with the HF guild tonight!

I AM looking forward to getting into groups and really flashing the flexibility, but it seems as though the traits are (for the most part) the same as any other MMO. That is, grind levels to unlock and slowly power up your character. Don't get me wrong, character building (and specifically customizable, multi-option systems) is a main reason I enjoy this type of game. After weapon skills are unlocked, the game has lost some uniqueness for me though.

I'm also rather peeved that I can't swap weapons in battle.

You can equip 2 sets of weapons and switch between them during battle with the key that is next to the 1 key at the top of the keyboard.

Check out your character pane ('H') and look on the bottom left. There are 2 spots for weapons.

I've been playing my Norn Engineer in the Lornar's Pass zone - 25-40. Have to say this is the coolest zone I've seen yet - gorgeous high mountains and so much cool stuff I couldn't describe it all in one post. Has me really excited to adventure again after getting a bit tired of endless Sons of Svanir in earlier Norn zones.

By the way, welcome to the guild!

If any of ya'll need me, my main is Heinrich Harrer. Yeah, the big, dumb ranger who dies a lot.

Don't forget to sign up for the instance runs on Saturday nights and the WvW stuff has been moved to Friday. Our Monday group did all it could, but we just didn't have enough to make a difference. We should have a larger turnout on Fridays (there won't be one this Friday - it starts again next week).

I haven't been posting about GW2 much simply because I love the game (who wants to hear a fanboy raving?) and because every time I do, I just want to go play more GW2.

This has been one entertaining game.

I have one warrior who has done 100% map completion and I still see something or learn something new each day. Today I learned a feature of the trading post that I can't believe I did not know.

I learned that when you go to the 'My Transaction' tab, you can click at the top on "items I'm selling" and change it. And if you change it to "items I'm buying", you can cancel all those buy orders that you put in a long time ago that never got completed. Then go to the 'pick up' tab and collect all that money.
