With a current full roster of 53, would I have to drop someone prior to trying to sign a FA? Or can I try to sign a guy and then drop someone when/if he signs?

I would hate to drop a guy and have the FA not sign.

If you offer a contract, and then the next thing you do is release a guy, the game will ask you if you want to make the release contingent on the signing. So do that.
