View Full Version : Countdown to Dec 21, 2012 - End of the World

Watching CNBC special on preppers and got me thinking. Anyone sweating this Dec 2012?
I don't believe it but the build up to it will get me thinking about replenishing my emergency supplies anyway.
BTW - I finally watched "The Road" as Fry's had it on special. Depressing as hell. If it was me, I would have let go.
2012 — History.com Articles, Video, Pictures and Facts (http://www.history.com/topics/2012)
There has long been speculation that on December 21, 2012, the world as we know it will end. Some predict that we'll be wiped out by a natural disaster like a giant tidal wave, an Earth-wide earthquake or a tremendous volcanic eruption. Others believe that on that day in December, the Earth will collide with a mysterious "Planet X," causing magnetic pole shifts, gravitational reversals or a black hole so big that our solar system will simply disappear. What's more, believers say that this news is not really news at all; on the contrary, they argue, we have known about the coming apocalypse since the ancient Maya predicted and recorded it on their Long Count calendar more than 2,200 years ago.

If the world is going to end there isn't much point in emergency supplies.

I've wondered. There seems to have been a lot of natural disasters within the last last couple of years. Winter was mild and we're seeing lots of hot, record breaking weather.
If the world is going to end, there's nothing we can fucking do about it.

There's been some odd natural events and weather - it was a poor summer in Australia and it's been a colder and wetter than normal winter - but at the same time, we just forget about the bad runs different eras have had previously.
Interestingly enough before this thread I'd never heard about this:

i forget where i read it but it was some conversation between rfk and secret service during the cuban missile crisis asking him if he wanted his wife and kids moved to a gov't bunker. he said, 'no. that's not a world worth living in.'

Perhaps the Mayans weren't very good at spelling, and confused Global Warning with Global Warming?
Odd, though, the appeal of various numeralogies. I'm not sure why anyone even pretending to understand science would see relevance in numbers of turns around the sun. Did the Mayans even think the Earth had an orbit? What are the Adventists up to these days?

Is this supposed to go down at 11:11? Which time zone is that? I need to make sure I don't have any meetings on my calendar. I have a holiday luncheon thing at 11:30 CST. I would hate to go out during that.
I'm going with MDT (Mayan Daylight Time).

Dec. 21 has arrived for some parts of the world, but some people would rather not be too complacent. Others believe the exact hour of the Mayan calendar end of the world prediction reconciles with the time of the December solstice, which is at 11:12 UTC.

Sudden onset of a migraine last night and the sound of howling winds. Saw it was just after midnight and thought "hmm". Then a little bit later there is an explosion outside (my guess is transformer) and tarted to wonder "wtf". Series of really screwed up coincidences.
The day isn't over yet. My biggest fear is that some psycho believes the hype and want to go out in a blaze of glory. Especially with the bar for depravity being set last week.

Wake County Wind Advisory (http://www.wral.com/weather/page/1010362/?id=11279-NCZ041)
1036 am EST Fri Dec 21 2012
...Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this evening...
* location...all of central North Carolina.
* Winds...west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
* Timing...through this afternoon with the strongest winds likely
during the mid to late afternoon.
* Impacts...lightweight objects left outdoors could be blown
around and some tree limbs may be knocked down. Driving high
profile vehicles may become difficult.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Wind Advisory means that frequent wind gusts at or above 40 mph
are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult...
especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Be
mindful if outdoors and near trees.
Expires:220000 gmt
I guess that's a sorta-win for the Mayans. Good job, there.

This was a heart stopper for a bit. My youngest daughter's school was in lock down for an hour and a half as police went room to room checking the school.
A parent saw someone outside the school with a gun. As it turns out it was a counselor for the school and this parent had never met him. There are some counselors within the school that apparently are given a permit to carry as a line of defense. This is actually the first that I have heard of that.

I imagine it wouldn't be a big deal. I would think they would be just as happy as everyone. My guess is they would just know the bunker and supplies will still be there when "they really need it". Until then, carry on happily.
