Sounds like most of those games are factory sealed, so I think this was just an obsessive pursuit.

If the transaction goes through, eBay makes 100K.

"I perfected some full sets by getting every title of them factory sealed, just for the challenge of it," he said. "Some titles are extremely hard to come by brand new when they're 25 years old. Now that the mission is complete, maybe it's time to move on."

This reminds me of an Adam Savage TED Talk where he describes his pursuit in making a perfect replica of the Maltese Falcon and something else (forgot what it was). The message of the talk was that the end result wasn't the point of these pursuits, but the pursuit itself was.
