View Full Version : FOFC Re-boot/Re-Make Challenge: Draft Full!

Been wanting to do another movie draft but was struggling for an idea. I know we've done a few "Hollywood" type drafts so I wanted a new spin. Earlier this week I read that they're making "Raging Bull 2" and a "The Shining" prequel. Yechhhh. But given the current trend I thought...
FOFC Ultimate Re-Make Challenge
You're an Executive Producer. A Studio Head comes to you and says he wants you to remake ANY film you want. What you must find is:
1. Film to be Re-Made
2. Producer
3. Director
4. Lead Actor/Actress
5. Lead Actor/Actress
6. Supp. Actor/Actress
7. Supp. Actor/Actress
8. Wild Card/Special Element
9. Score/Soundtrack
10. Budget
notes:
-- The film is scheduled for a 2014 release. Meaning you are limited to people who are alive and working NOW (I couldn't find a set of sub-categories I liked and this seemed the most fun/made the most sense to me)
-- The Studio Head says you can select any film from the history of the world
-- Wild Card/Special Element can literally be anything. Maybe you want your movie to be 3D or IMAX. Maybe you want another supporting actor. Maybe you want a certain writer, cinematographer or special effects guy. Maybe you want access to the 'Rolling Stones" discography. You get the idea.
-- I thought BUDGET would be a fun addition. Here's my idea:
1st Rd. = Big Budget/Blockbuster (250+mil)
2nd & 3rd Rd. = Median Budget (~130 mil)
4/5/6 = Small Budget (less than 60 mil)
7-10 = Indie budget (less than 30 mil)
The thought here is to put pressure on the people selecting first. If you want unlimited money you may have to sacrifice your first choice(s) If you want to make your passion project you may have to do so under a more constricted budget. I think it adds a level of real world relevance.
Of course the only real restriction here is in the minds of the voters as Budget is strictly a factor to be considered during the voting process.
thoughts/discussion:
-none of this is set in stone. If anyone has any ideas/improvements I'm all ears.
-I'm not in love with PRODUCER. It seems like just a name to attach to your movie. Would it be better to have another Supporting Actor/Actress?
-also, sign up thread for those interested

Instead of drafting the movie to be made, I would suggest drafting the genre and then naming your re-made movie at the end. This way you leave the option open of building your cast/crew and then tailoring the actual movie as your cast develops. It would also make the "reveal" (the post where everyone shows off their team) more interesting, IMO.
I also see issues with the budget component. Would you be judging based on the "reasonableness" of assembling the talent with that budget?

the problem with that would be if one person takes fantasy and another takes sci-fi and they both want to re-make buck rodgers. (it's sci-fi btw) I'd rather have them clearly defined. And you could build your cast first and then pick a movie that fits them later in the draft.
and budget is strictly a voting element. you wanna re-make "Billy Madison" on an indie budget? sounds reasonable to me. you wanna re-make "Gone with the Wind" on a small budget? Yeesh, that might be tough.

Are we using real pay rates for this? Like Will Smith is probably 25m plus.
Where is screenwriter?

Maybe make the Lead categories as Actor/Actress also? Not every film has a male lead or a female lead.

I need 2 female leads so I can remake Brokeback Mountain with Blake Lively and ScarJo

nope. even big stars take indie roles. budget is more of a factor on things like scale. war epic with a shitload of effects/extras? probably need big budget. comedy or drama? probably won't need much of a budget.
again, this isn't a restriction only something to be factored in by voters. you wanna remake "Spartacus" on an indie budget go for it. but you wouldn't fare well in my eyes.
Where is screenwriter?
i debated producer or screenwriter. problem is i couldn't name 5 screenwriters if you asked me. if people prefer it i'm open to adding/changing something.
as it is if you really wanted a screenwriter you could add it under the wild card slot

I'm not sure I like the genre rule as i see potential trouble with it. Your own example puts Wizard of Oz as musical, when it really fits better as fantasy (that's where it is #1 on the AFI 10 at 10). I foresee major controversy over this in the draft.

But how specific will the genres need to be? If someone drafts a comedy, can someone else draft a romantic comedy? If someone drafts a drama, can someone draft a war film? Not trying to be difficult, just want to make sure we don't run into trouble during the draft.

I'm with you.
The genre picking is the one thing that has made me hesitant on joining.

Al lot of movies fall into a couple genres. I dont see an issue with WoO being a musical and a fantasy. It is both. Bull Durham is a comedy and sports movie.
EDIT: I think drafting a movie would be better then drafting a genre. I have a movie in mind and really want to do it. The movie is the whole reason I signed up.
NorvTurnerOverdrive
08-03-2012, 05:55 PM
ok, i'm gonna do away with the genre-thing. i'd rather people have fun and make the movie they wanna make than adhere to some silly arbitrary rule

don't worry. "Howard the Duck" will still be there when you pick.

In lieu of "budget", what if the round you developed the intellectual property determined the budget of the movie.
Separate "Wild card" and "special element" into different

Like I can remake "Tron" by picking it in round 10, but my budget sucks

some topics for consideration:
Can I take the Actor/Director/SoundGuy from the original?
(I don't see why not. I would call you a very boring person though)
If someone takes Police Academy 3 can I take Police Academy 6?
(Again, I don't see why not. If you feel that 6 was the seminal film of the series)
If someone takes 3D from the WildCard slot is it off the board?
(I would say yes)
Anything else you can think of? Last chance for rules discussion. Speak now or forever hold your piss
