Religion would be the easiest way to control a plurality to a great extent. But media/advertising is a great way to control a majority to some extent.

I would say cutting off access to the outside world, banning religion, but then just replacing religion with yourself (as the government, or leader, or whoever's doing the controlling) That formula has worked pretty well historically.

That's getting a lot harder to do these days: there are so many different ways for the outside world to creep in.

Using Cognitive Dissonance is the best way to control people. Convince them to support something that is not in their best interest.

Media. Definitely.

If you disconnect yourself from the media for an extended period of time and make all of your judgments based solely on logic, you're likely to wind up in the extreme minority in most of your viewpoints.

My answer might change depending on the country. For example, the US Government has it's fingers so deep in the media that you could almost say they're the same entity. But, hey...none of that matters because we (along with 87 other countries) have freedom.
