I saw Simmons mention Handball, and why the heck we haven't dominated the sport, and I was wondering.. what athletes would have "natural talent" playing a sport other then their own..
So, this would be my Mount Rushmore of Athletes who likely would have success playing another sport. Mine is only for Handball, but you can do one for whatever sport oyu want:
Mine:
Olympic Team Handball Mount Rushmore:
LeBron James: Quick first step? Check. Explosive jumping ability? Check Body type that can take contact? Check. If Lebron played Handball instead of basketball, we certainly wouldn't have been crushed by 40 by Brazil at a recent Pan Am Games. Of course, Lebron would be about a billion dollars porrer, but eh. you win some you lose some..
Clint Dempsey Yes, he's a little undersized for the game, but he does have agility and speed and more then that, men's handball is CROWDED out there. you want someone who's willing to scrap, barge and work for every free inch they can get. Don't think Deuce would be good at it?
Ashton Eaton: Who? Yes, unless you've followed the Olympics you wouldn't know who he is. He's the gold medalist in the Decathalon. Strength? Speed? Stamina? Technique? You have to have it all to be the "Greatest Athlete in the World", so I'm thinking that, yeah, he could be a hell of a good player if he wanted to.
Hope Solo If she doesn't melt down (Handball goalies give up a hell of a lot more goals than soccer goalies do even with the smaller net).. she would be great. Quick on her feet, good with her hands.. Willing to take heat to defend her teammates even when they screw up? Works for me! Although I have a feeling that she'd be even more divisive a figure on a team with only seven on the floor, as opposed to 11 on the soccer pitch
