Crusader Kings 2 w/ Sword of Islam, The Kingdom of Aragon

I've been wanting to play CK2 for a long while, but something else has always gotten in the way. Today, we end that, and I get my first chance to play the sequel for my 4th favorite game of all time (according to my Top 30 Video Games Dynasty). Let's get my feet wet!

In 1035, Aragon was made into a kingdom after Sancho III of Navarre died, and his realm was split among his heirs. It's a very small parcel of land, but historically, it becomes very important. The Kingdom of Aragon expands militarily and dynastically. By its height, not only has it added jewels in Iberia such as Valencia and Barcelona to its Crown, but it also has land in Greece, half of Italy, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, the Balearic Isles, and other small holdings in the Great Sea. It's my hope to turn this small, young one province nation into a nation with a similar parabola, with conquest in Iberia against the Moors and later in the Mediterranean.

Our first and only province is Alto Aragon. We have 5 military, 9 economy and 11 culture in technology. Our Holdings include the Capital of Jaca, with a fort level of 4.5 and 6.5 taxes; the Barony of Loarre, with 4.5 fort level, and 6.5 gold in tax income; the Bishopric of Barbastro with 8.8 tax; and tthe City of Huesca, 13.4 tax and 0.4 fort. We have 913 troops in our levy. The holdings are new to e, ,and I just have to hope I can suss through them.

King Sancho is 24 and maried to 15 year old Isabel of Aragon. With no children, his heir is his sister. King Sancho is Cruel, Lustful, Gluttonous, Diligent and a Flamboyant Schemer. He has 7 Diplomacy, 7 Martial, 6 Stewardship, 12 Intrigue, and 7 Learning. Not bad scores at all. Queen Isabel has 5, 6, 6, 6, and 1, and since he gets half of those, shes not vey inspiring as either a wife or as the mother of my children.

King Sancho is King of Aragon, Duke of Aragon, Count of Alto Aragon and Baron of Loarre. The King title includes de jure the Duke of Barcelona, which is next to me and rocking four provinces. I am in the same house, House Jimena, as the King of Navarra, King of Castille, King of Leon and King of Galicia.

We have an Agnatic-Cognatic Gavelkind succesion. Limited Crown Authority, Free Invstiture, normal feudal levies, no feudal taxation, normal city levies, taxation, and church levies, with minimum church taxation. This all seems like a good place to be right now, and I am content to not switch anything around until I get my feet wet with the settings.

Several people have a claim on my throne, and most like me a lot. One is Princess Sancha of Aragon, who is in my court, and my sister. She liks me +56. Garcia, my Bishop of Barbastro is sitting at +19 and my brother. My half brother and Marshal is Sancho Ramirez, an he's just +9. Finally, my current heir, sister Urraca is the one who doesn't like me at -54. She's ambitious, and that accounts for a -50 on her record.

My current council is:

Chancellor Esteban de Ayerbe, 11 diplo
Marshal Sacho Ramirez, 13 martial
Steward Mayor Enrique of Heusca, 15 stewardship
Spymaster Prince Garcia of Aragon, and Bishop of Barbastro, 4 intrigue
Court Chaplain Muno de Alquezar, 4 learning

I need a bump with my spy and chaplain when I can.

I emphasize infantry melee weapons, trade practice, and noble customs

I can choose from four ambitions, have son, daughter, amass wealth or become exalted. I can also chooe the plot to slay my wife. I do have a poor choice as a wife, but I don't know the plot system yet, so I'm going to go with have a male heir as my ambition.

I'm sending my steward out to collect taxes, my spymaer and chaplian to work on tech. With all of the Iberian Kings liking me, I send my Chancellor to France to improve relations. I don't care about anyone else right at the momnt, since i expect to blast the Duke of Barcelona at some point in time when I'm strong enough and I already am on good terms with my other neighbors. Finally, I send my Marshal to train troops, because I expect to hit someone fast if possible. I always like to hit as quickly as possible, adn the one proince Zaragoza Infidels are right next door and looking like a solid expansion arget. I would love to free my fellow Catholics from the yoke of their Moslim masters, and begin my own personal Reconquista.

Oct 1, 1066 - Barcelona has declared war on Zaraoza, so I have to strike quickly . I assemble my troops in my nation and declare a de jure war for Zaragoza. It looks like a Holy War wil bring in a bunch of Islamic allies on their sid,e and I don't want that. Let's play this smart. In march my troops. I am not calling on allies.

Oct 8 - Battle begins! Our 906 troops are fighting their 271 troops.

Oct 9 - They call in aid from an ally, Calatayud. They muster another 280 troops to join the battle.

Oct 20 - Navarra and Najera, an independant county here are now in war as well, and we are not the onl one loking to strike quickly.

Oct 29 - The allied troop join their forces in the Battle of Zaragoza.

With their army lagely destroyed by us, I decide to push and I declare de jure war on Calatayud. I reassamble my troops and order them in. My 674 troops move to their 125. 18 Aug - Sorry, they actually ere going in the opposite direction. I misread it

11 Sept - The Mayor of Heusca passed, and left my Steward position open. Replacing is a great guy, who has a 20 martial score! I appoint Garcia as my Steward, and I grant Caspe, the Bishopric in Zaragoza to my Marshal, who really liked me already. This clears up my Marshal for my new guy without hurting the feelings of my good marshal, who loses 20 happiness with me due to the remvoal of his marshal but gains 20 for the barony. I also get a very loyal vassal in the same place as my unloyal brother in law who has the city there.

March 30 - My son hs become 16 and an Elusive Shadow. This gives his a very powerful slae of some abiltiies. Here he iis:

Sancho II - Elusive Shadow, Gregarious, Cynical, Patient, Charitable, Honest,

Diplomacy - 17 - Amazing
Martial - 8 - Solid
Stewardship - 2 - Uh oh
Intrigue - 18 - Amazing
Learning - 3 - Wow

So, he ended up very two note. I need to marry him to somone with a very high stewardship to counter this. In the meantime I am making him my new Chancellor.

Let's find a wife. THis is our first opportunity to select someone to carry on the line. I want to make a perect choice

Ater looking and looking hard and finding nothing but one person who is hands and tails above the rest, I'm going to gamble.

Say hello to Alpais, a simple Courtier in Tulousse. Here she is, stats first!

Age 16
22, 6, 11, 11, 11

Grey Eminance, Genius, Kind, Just, and...

Homosexual

We'll gamble that the infertility hit with her won't be too bad. She's perfect otherwise

11 April - The marriage is agreed to, and I take some gold.

Their combination in diplomacy will be staggering. If they have a good Chancellor watch out!

Abe Sargent

Now, something interesting happened while we were waiting for our bride to arrive. The two province Islamic nation of LLeida has split into two and each has gone their seperate way. This gives me an opening to exploit.

15 April - We have taken Albarracin after they offer to become our liege.

Albarracin - Castillian, Catholic, Holdings - Albarracin - County Capital with 4.5 fort, 5.9 taxes; City of Temel, 21.6 tax, 1.2 fort; Mosque of Hijar, 1.3 tax, 1.5 fort

Our new vassal comes in with a 20 positive relationship with Sancho the Fat

Abe Sargent
08-20-2012, 02:49 PM
20 Apr - I move to medium crown authority, so I can revoke infidel titles - but I can't get it pased - it seems that those in teh de jure crown of Aragon can vote gainst it, such as the Duke of Barcelona.

24 May - I cancel it.

4 July - Galicia lost their Holy War a lot of land in teh east went to the Moors, and I gained a ton of courtiers flocking from the area. I take a look at the new blood. I have a 23 diplo guy I make my new Chancellor and I move my son to Spymaster.

Now that I have no wars, it's time to move my inheritance. I check, but i can;t I need a higher crown authority to move to primogeniture. Ah well.

5 October - This is a call to arms from Galicia, against Castille and a Sultan, for claims against Leon. I don't join them - the rest of Leon has been absorbed by Castille. I don't want to war against Castille.

I revoke the money plot and get one to revoke the Count of albarracin

I begin my plot, and gather allies - first I gather Bishop Julian of Caspe. Next I talk with Mayor of Huesca. Both join me.

9 Oct My son joins my plot.

13 Oct - Prince Garcia joins me

I send an Ultimatium to the Count with a letter.

24 Nov - My youngest daughter is a genius, and she has become trusting.

2 Dec - Urgell declared independace. It's currently in war with Barcelona. I order my Chncellor to Najera to sow dissent there.

17 January, 1087 - Sancho the Fat has passed away at the age of 44.

Sancho II has taken over. This means a couple of changes are in place. First of all, his brother takes over as Count of Zaragoza, since the titles split. Secondly, the war is over and Albarracin is back in the fold like nothing happened. I was hoping I could force them out faster thi way than revking the title, but I see that's not likely.

The old Marshal is no longer in our court since he was in Zaragoza, so we need a new one an a 17 marshal is found - Alonzo. We need a new Spymaster, and go with Pedro, who ha an ambition to become a spymaster and is at 13.

Our new ambition is to have a daughter, since the oldone was fulfilled to have a title.

Abe Sargent
08-21-2012, 02:14 PM

10 May - Meet our daughter, Rosa - ambition fulfilled

I decide on a Revoke Albarracin title, but I try to actually revoke it to see what happens. no actual plot or anything. It woked, we get the county to us, and gained one permanent point of intrigue. Now I send a couple of gifts to disappointed vassals.

I order a City Bazaar in Teruel in Albarracin

I chose the prestige ambition

13 Sept, I give my youngest sister to my mother to raise.

18 Oct - The marriage occurs

20 Feb, 1090 - Lleida is captured by Barcelona, which is not good news, because I wanted it first before I attacked Barcelona

I need to grab Taragona before anyone else does - it's the last small Islamic state near us.

27 March - I have combined my forces from Alto and Alba... into one army of 1500 and move it into Tarra to fight the 400 defenders.

Iberia in January 25, 1091

While our personal Reconquista is going along fine, the rest of Catholic Iberia is suffering badly. My original plan was to get to six and the challenge Barcelona at four provinces and slowly take it's lands. Now we are each at 5, so a battle is not as likely to stick. The Duke of Asturias, to the east of Castille is the remannts of the Leon/Galicia Kingdom that was just smashed. Theres been too much war by the Catholics. Their men are in smaller and smaller armies as they wage war too muh, and then you add in the devastating wars between each other, and they can't hold off the Moors. My issue is what happens when the Moslims stop chewing through most o Iberia and smash into me. Even if I'm sitting at 8 or 9 provinces after successfully gobbling much of Barcelona's Duchy, I'm still having an issue with manpower. I need holy orders or mercenaries or something. think I'm going to save some coin for emergency mercenaries.

So, 25 years in, and we need to get some more expansion to protect us long term.

Abe Sargent

30 Apr - I appoint Muno, my Court Chaplain, Bishop of the new Bishopric in Tarragona.

I also send him to convert that populace

Toledo has declred war on Barcelona and I don't think they can stand if Toldo smashes them hard. I check my armies. While Barcelona's forces are out, I may want to hit and take Barcelona.

8 June - THe Mayor of Tortosa in Tarragona converts to Catholic.

8 Sept - Barcelona is hammered by Toledo (The Dhunnunids). I DOW THem for Barcelona.

8 Oct Our King gains Brave

11 Oct - Siege of Barcelona begnas

Dec 22 - Toledo capture Lleida

4 Feb, 1092 - Wife pregnant

11 Mar - I will be my son's guardian

14 Mar - Urgll falls

25 July - Son gains Pride

29 - July - Barcelona fall to us

3 Sept - We begin the siege of Rosello

12 October - Meet my second son, Ernesto

29 April, 1093 - Rosell falls to us

14 My - I will raise Rosa myself

2 June - After being freed by Castillean allies, we begin to siege Urgell

13 Aug - A quick siege and assault captures a place sieged and captured twice already in the past year.

Barcelona - Catalan, Catholic, Barcelona - County Capital, 5.9 bse tax, 4.5 fort; Barony of Osona, 5.9 base tax, 4.5 fort; Bishopric of Vic, 8.4 base tax, 1.0 fort; Barony of Manresa, 5.9 base tax, 4.5 fort;

I order a Castle Town in Barcelona proper

The provinces we had are freed, so their war score drops with teh Moors, and Castillian army of 2200 is currently beseging LLeida to free it.

Abe Sargent
08-21-2012, 10:33 PM
24 August - Sancho III is now Patient.

13 October - LLeida freed and battle is about to ensue between their two big armies.

11 Dec - Castille loses but brings the Moslem nation to 2000

6 August, 1094 - Successful Crusade in Sicily.

3 September - The Barcelona war is just give and take. A land is capture, and then freed.

9 December, 1095 - After a quiet year in which the only news was about my daughter, the Catholics have pushed back the Dhunnunids (Toledo) from Barcelona. This creates an interesting possibiity. Assuming that they push into the Toledo area to start capturing provinces, I am in an interesting place. If Castille, Barcelona and myself all attack Toledo and grab a province or two - We're going to be in a good place. I have more than 650 gold for mercs if I need them. So if I go to war against them and a quick peace ensues and I am isolated, I still have a chance for victory. I can buy a few thousand troops to keep the fight on. Meanwhile, with the complete failure of Catholics in the west against the Moors, by joining the war against Toledo, I also help to distract and plit up the forces of them, and hopefully to allow Barcelona or Castille, especially Castille, to take some land.

I want to consolidate my holdings, but I am also an opportunist. Plus, every province captured thus far is in the King of Aragon de jure, so there've een no major issues, no rebels, nothing.

I want to consolidate my holdings, but I am also an opportunist. Plus, every province captured thus far is in the King of Aragon de jure, so there've een no major issues, no rebels, nothing.

Since my main army did a few sieges and an assault, it's down to about 870 soldiers. Those from my other provinces will be about 1k in troops total.

Abe Sargent

Jan 1, 1096 - A large army of troops from Provence comes to assist us against the Muslims. I declare Holy War against Valencia, because I can take more than one province that way.

Hopefully, this is our Catholic push to reclaim momentum.

17 April - We win a major battle and slay 1200 of their foes in Cueca, and I order my troops to follow their army remnants to La Mancha.

12 May - We win in La Mancha and I order my mercs to Valnecia to follow their army while I split off the rest of my forces to join he siege in Molina.

6 May - I begin a small siege of Molina, with a small amry of 480 people, to keep the pressue on our foes -

29 May - Peace is made and now I am soloing a war with Toledo. I'm glad I have those mercs already here.

Denia - The farthestmost province in the three province Duchy of Valencia, Andalusian and Sunni, Holdings - Captial is Denia, base tax f 4.2, fort of 4; Elx Bishopric, 8 base tax; Alacant CIty, 14.9 base tax, 1.2 fort. This province is south of Valenica, northeast of Murcia, and east of Almasa, right on the water.

Valenica - The eye of the area, Aldalusian, Sunni, holdings - Valenica Capital - 4.2 base tax, 4 fort; City of Gandia, 17.9 base tax, 1.2 fort; Bishopric of Xativa, 8 base tax; Barony of Alacus, 4.2 base tax and 4 fort.

Castellon - Andalusian, Sunni, Castello Captial - 4. bse tax, 4.5 ort; Nules Bisphoric, 8 base tax; City of Alpuente, 17.9 base tax, 1.2 fort

20 May - I ransom some prisoners for credits.

I give Denia to one of my courtiers, Vela Vermudez. I am giving him the County and all lower titles as well . That pulls several off my radar.

I give my Marshal the City of Gandia, in Valencia. The City of Alpunte in Casellon is given to an older courtier. I hand Nules, the Bishopric from V to an old courtier who is very loyal to me already, and I appoint a new Marshal with a 19 martial skill, and I grant him th Bishric of Xativa as wel.. This dropped me to 9 holdings in my desmesne, and I have nine max.

You can see several major changes to the area after the Catholics fought back. We are now at the farthest extent that Aragon expanded into the Moors in Iberia. Add the rest of Barcelona and the Balearic Isles to our and, and we have everything Aragon had, and that's everything Aragon has in its Kingdom - save for one province of Barcelona in France.

Expansion so far has been easy with the de jure claims against various foes. But to take additional land we nly have Holy War cb, and that brins in a lot of other Sunni enemies. as you can see, we have sevearl future expansion opportunites in Marrakech and along the coast the south west.

On western Iberia, you an see where France came in and too a province, and another province falls to the Catholics as well, and the powerful Islamic state broke up and is fighting a war against its daddy. This is exactly what we need to see. As of right now, with these three provinces, we are undoubtedly the strongest Catholic power in Iberia. Castille has been invloved, but it hasn' been expanding massively or anything.

I ned to consolidate my holdings, convert some provinces to Catholic, and so forth. This will only happen with time. I don't have the forces to fight others, so I need to focus on upgrading and growing. These lands taken were done due to opportunity no and an eye towards weakening the Moors for later.

31 - March - Sancho III gains Brave

1 April - Rosllo falls to Genoa. Castille has joined Holy War against Toledo a few months ago and are being besiegd in Soria by troops counting 3200. 1 September - We have rebuilt my forces from previous escapades, and I am mulling over some nice targets. The Isles? Barcelona? I don't want to expand eastward until I have all of my ducks in a row with the Duke of Barcelona.

I have a way of doing that. I have a 50 year old courtier with a claim on the Duke of Barcelona title. I can press his claim, take Barcelona in one stroke, and gain three provinces. I can't wait on him fo much longer, as he ould die anytime. I was waiting until the war with the Balearic Islaes was over, but that does not look like its happening.

15 Sept - I push his claim for the Duke title against his brother, Duke of Barcelona

I do not call on any allies

I send 1300 troop into Urgell from Alto Aragon. I will move my 1600 troops from Tarragona and Barcelona into Lleida.

23 Sept - I join a war between Galicia and a Sultanate on teh east side of the Peninsula.

11 Oct - We defeat them in LLeida and initiate a siege after capturing and ransoming two prisoners.

1 June, 1105 - After a quiet year of besieging, my Chaplain has converted Castellon, and I send him to Valencia

I also give the County of Castellon t my son.

8 Oct - LLeida falls to us - I order my troops to Empuries

22 Nov - I create som additional armies in Zaragoza and Albarracin to support our forces in the field

13 Feb, 1106 - We capture Urgell

17 Nov - We capure most of Empuries and they offer peace. We install Duke Berenguer Ramon as Duke of Barelona, and he gets teh three proinces from the Duchy

Urgell - Adjacent to Alto Aragon, this Catalan Catholic province is Urgell Proper, a castle with base tax of 5.9 and 4 fort; City of Pallars with base tax of 17.9 and 08 fort; Barony of Puigerda, 5.5 base tax and 3 fort

Empuries - Captial is Empuries with 7.9 base tax and 4.5 fort; City of Girona rocking 20.4 base tax, 0.8 fort; Barony o Cerdanya, base tax of just 4 and 3 fort. Catalan and Catholic

Lleida - Also Catalan and Catholic, Lleia is captial with 5.7 base tax and 4 fort; Cervera, city with 12.4 base, 1.2 fort; Bishopric of Solsona with 8.2 tax and 0.5 fort.

We finish the war with 509 coins.

We do have a claim on Rosello in case we want to make it later. The Duke is happy right now, but really wants both Tarragona and Barcelona, which we currently have to oursleves. That will displease him later.

24 July - Stole some more tech with my Spymaster in Moorish Lands

What I'm doing now is preparing for the big push later. I want to grab the stuff I need to now, so that later, I have nothing to flank me, surpise me, or anything else.

I just finished selling some more ransoms after the battle we captured, and i puchase a new Holding in Alto Aragon. We order a new city built.

13 October - I request and am granted Guardianship of my grandson, Fadrique

Genoa has delcared Holy War versus Minorca, the last province out here in the Balearic Isles. I'm tempted to break the truce to get it first. I have to war with Genoa for Rosello later, so I don't want to do one, then wait, then do the other. If I break the truce, I lose 20 relations with Moslim leaders and 100 prestige. That's not that much.

Let's do it

25 Oct - We defeat the local army and begin the siege

22 Dec - We have captured Minorca with Genoan assastance and take it

Menorca - Andalusian, Sunni, Ciutadella is the capital with 4.2 base tax; City of Mao with 23.6 base tax. The city has a Mayor that serves us.

1 June - I order a Small Barracks in Jaca

27 June - Fadrique became envious

26 July - The Mayor of Eivissa passed Andres, the new one, is a two note character, with 16 marshal and 12 stewardship, but 1 or 2 in the other three stats.

14 Sept - Pope Urban II passed and Pope Leo X as ascended

1 Jan, 1113 - Knights of St John are formed. That's a huge weight of holy order I can call on. I easily have the Piety to call on them. I can get 7700 troops from te St. John order if I'm fighting Muslims or othr non-Catholics.

That's worth it

Time for that Holy War, before someone else grabs them

You see, Marrakech captured Almansa province some time ago, and now I can take both with war. The Almoravid Sultanate has taken it, and they won the wars with the Moslims in N Afrca, and they are huge. I could DOW Holy War for Murcia, to get both provines. Bring out the Knights for nohing but piety, i have 600 coin for the war and mercs, call on some Catholic allies to assist and blast the Sultanate.

It's jumping through a lot of hoops for just two provinces, but here they are - Murcia's three holdings have a base tax of 42; Almansa of 38. As a comparison, Denia is 26, Valencia, with four holdings is at 49, Castellon is at 32, Barcelona's four at 36. This is a very wealthy amd rich area. I'd like to expand my influence alonng the coast to places like Almeria and Granada afterwards.

Is it time yet?

Abe Sargent
08-24-2012, 02:21 PM
What I would need to do is strike hard and fast - take our targets without fear. The Almoravids stretch from th edge of Mali up the entire African Coast to Constanine and Bizerte just west of Tunis. They have all of that land, and then they also have the provinces in west Iberia south of the Cathlics and where the old Galicia is, plus the two provinces adjacent to me. If we could both hit them hard, it would be amazing. But in additon to the large oppoent we'd run into, we'd also have to face the possibility of allies joining them.

And it would all be for just two provinces. Murcia and Almansa.

The other possibility is to DOW the Dhunnunids and take the three provinces of Cordoba. Just one of those three has a lot of value. It's just th Knights are a great resource for someone with a lot of piety and fighting non-Catholcis and that's me.

When I declare war, I always do it with plans, and schemes and with a certainly that I will win, but I'm not certain here at all. It's a HUGE risk to fight a big foe who may ally up.

Let's do it!

Abe Sargent

1 January, 1113 - I declare Holy War on the big bad for Murcia.

I spend 165 Piety to "hire" the Knights of St. John - Ther force of 7700 arrives in Alto Aragon. I join them with troop in Alto Aragon for a force of 9315. I order them to Tarragona. Meanwhile, I assemble my entire fleet to meet them there. 92 ships will rally in Tarragona, after ferrying troops on the coast to Denia, a launhing point for invasion into Murcia.

16 January - Castille joins our war

27 Jan - Asturias joins our war

5 Feb - Our merc + King army is loaded up, but I don;t take them to the siege, but to North Africa, to raid down there The Knights and King are to keep them occupied.

21 Feb - Navarrra joins our war, and we arrive at Al Djazair and begin a siege

I order my fleet to return, and I purchse some mercs to send back out now

4 Mar - The Siege of Murcia has begun

10 Apr - Siege of Almansa begins

18 Apr - Mercs loaded up and I send them across Africa as well, to Beni Yanni, where the siege begins in 29 Apr

10 Sept - A giant force arrives in Murcia, and I have to break off the siege in Almansa to lend aid.

4 Oct - We capture Al-D's first Holding

22 Oct - We win in Murcia, capture two pirsoners who I ransom for cash, and don;t have enough troops to keep up two sieges so we concentrate on Murcia

29 - Nov - Navarran troops defeat the fleeing army from Murcia.

8 Dec - We win the second siege in A-D

18 De - I assault the 3rd holding and capture it in Al-D

9 Jan, 1114 - We capture th first holding in Beni Yanni

12 Jan 0 We capture th first holding in Murcia

22 Jan - I assault and take teh seond hoding in Beni Yanni

30 Jan - We take the 2nd holding in Murcia

3 Feb - We capture the final holding in Al-D

12 Feb - We fully capture Murcia and Beni Yanni.

13 Feb - We get a peace proposal from the Muslims. they surrender, and we have won!

Murcia - Andalusian, Sunni - this is not in th crown of Aragon, but instead under the Crown of Andalusia and the Duchy of Murcia. Murcia proper is captial with 7.9 bas tax and 4.5 fort; Cartagena Cit is 18.3 base tax, 2. fort; Lorca Bishopric, 8 base tax

Almansa - Andalusian and Sunni, Almasa is capital with 5.9 base tax and 4.5 fort, Albacete City, 12.8 base tax, 2.1 fort; Hellin Bishopric 8 base tax; Barony of Tobarra, 4 base tax and 3 fort

I hand the Barony of Tobarra and the Cities and Bishoprics to my courtiers. I have to pay for some courtirs to join my court, because I ran out

I make my Steward Count of Menorca, and that drops my desmesne to enough to work with

We had a few deaths, the Count of Calatayud and my Chancellor died, as well as the Duke of Barcelona. Post ransoms, I have 13 gold left after all of that. A Jihad was called for Armenia. I suspect it's

I thought we would have more opposition that one 4000k army in Murcia, but perhaps they were fighting in the Castillean front, or they had not had enough time to recoup after that big war with their co-religious buddies.

Anyway, as you can see, this map shows Castille's move into Toledo, ours into Barcelona, the Balearic Isles, and Murcia. Castille has gobbled more Catholic lands in the northwest. I'm not sure where my future expansion plans lie. Grenada perhas, as I go along the coast. Maybe that one Genoese provinces of Rosello which is the final de jure provinces belonging to my crown.

Here's the map. France has been teh big winner They took three provinces here, and have Tunisia, Sicily and southern Italy. You can see Castilean expansion has been slow. The Almoravids are to our immediate west in the south. I don't really want to gobble up the Casarids right now. I prefer expansion into richer areas.

You can see where we just took Rosello to the northeast, and our expansion in the coastal area. We have six provinces there that are Muslim and not giving us any taxes or levy any troops. We need to convert them. In order to speed up conversion, I may give away one or two lower valued ones so a local Count can focus on his Chaplain working on them.

There are a lot of places I can look for expansion before I go east to the Mediterranean. Corsica and Sardinia have been taken by Genoa. Maybe I go for Malta, its owned by a one province Moslim nation.

My hope is that Castille absorbs the interior stuff, and I take a few more coastal provinces. Having the point would be nice. Castille has several vulnerable places around it, like the Casarids and the two brown provinces.

Castille has ceased to be, but the Queen of Leon claimed Castille as her title. Leon has become Castille. It's a mess in the north. Vescaya i independent, Navarra is in a war with ther Catholics, Asturias is still independent, Navarra has two provinces, Castille or Leon three, and the County of Burgas has two provinces. I owe it to my Catholic brethren to unite these idiots.

19 August - the idiot King of France just got himself Excommunicated. The Excommunication bomb has been changed significantly You can't use it to take lands, but simply to force an abdication

I could spend 500 piety, request an invasion of France, and if I win, I get the following: I keep all occupied territory, and I become a new King of France. If I win, I win BIG. Change this whole dynasty big. It's a nice opportunity, and I would like to force France out of Iberia, and this would allow me to do it in one war. But it's not what I want to do this time out. So no go

Castille has just been attacked by Moslims in a Holy War. I ask to join, but we can't We are still technically at war with them from their conflict with Navarra. They'd better end that soon, and get ready.

Here's how I have huge piety with my leaders. A successful Holy War gives a ton of piety. Paying for the Knights is 160, so I still get piety from the war, but just less. I have more than 700 right now.

Part of me wants to declare Holy War for Seville from the same guys going after Castille and then hit them in the side to relieve pressure on the Catholic side of the peninsula. But the enemy is the Almoravid Sultanate, and they have vast swathes of land to draw forces from as well as not being at war with anyone other than Castille. I can't strike them until I'm ready.

This is a guy who only has a 4 natural martial skill, and yet I've accidentally made an amazing general. I would have preferred a sneaky guy, but he'll do. I appoint him as my new Marshal.

Time to find a new wife

I want a wife who is really good in intrigue and diplomacy to make up for her general husband. My son's base stats are 6 in dip, 4 in martial, 8 in steward, 5 in intrigue and 2 in learning.

I love this 16 year old chick named Peronelle with 22 diplomacy, but just 7 intrigue. She's a genius, and her base stats are 6, 4, 4, 6 and 7. That's not bad overall, but I'd prefer the 7 to not be in learning.

Another genius is 18 year old Iren Arpad in Pecs. She has 17 diplomacy, and 14 intrigue. He bases are 5, 5, 4, 4, 6. Again, not that hot, but her stats are really strong to help the King.

I am temped by the Princess Ana of Navarra, with a weak claim on the crown that can be inherited. Her bases are 5, 5, 6 5, 4.

Let's do that.

19 July I take the dowry money

Princess Ana of Navarra, 18

Dip 9, Mar 8, Stew 8, Intr 15, Learn 5

Elusive Shadow, Envious, Greedy, Temperate, Diligent, Honest

I use the dowry money long with some savings to construct a city in Cuenca

21 July - My other son, Sancho V, is slow. That's not physically slow but mentally slow.

25 July - Valladolid has gone independent and I have a claim on it.

I declare war on Valladolid to take it with my claim, this means that other Sunni nations aren;t necessarily going to jump in due to its Holy War status

26 August - The siege begins

19 Oct - I now have 8000 troops besieging them.

27 Oct - I assault and take the first holding

9 Nov - I just took the other two - I force peace and take it

Valladolid - Castillean and Catholic, this province is north of Toledo and Cuerna, west of Soria, south of Leon and Burgos, and east of Salamanca and Zamora. The county capital is the barony of Valadolid, with 10.6 base tax and 6.5 fort. With Mosque of Segovia still in place with 8 base tax and City of Tordesillas, 12.8 base tax and 1.7 fort level.

Because I have medium crown authority, I revoke the Mosque and Mayor because they are Sunni. At first I suggested conversion, but neither seemed interested - they both relent and give me their titles and I distribute them.

I hand the Barony of Loarre, in Alto Aragon, to my son, Ramiro. Now I can keep Valladolid i my possession for now.

15 Nov - The Mayor was my Spymaster has died. I appoint a new one.

6 Jan, 1157 - The Almoravids are at Holy War with Castille again. They will smash Castille. I'd rather grab lands from the small Christian armies than the big Moslim nation getting bigger. I'm going to wait for a bit, get his troops commuted, and then dealre Holy War for Seville. In preparation, I bring in both Holy Orders. Actually, I can;t Castille has the Knights Templar, so I grab the Knights of St. John. I order them to Cordoba and then to hold

16 Jan - My son, Sancho V has passed away after complications due to his injury

19 May - They arrive in Cordoba. And I wait. A 10000 strong army was seen a few weeks ago heading up, and I wait to wait another couple of weeks before beginning war

23 May We capture the first holding in Algiers

11 June - The second holding falls before us.

I give away all Baronies, Cities and Bishoprics

I create a better spymaster who is a Mayor of Huema, so I appoint the guy my new sneaky dude.

I make the Duke of Barcelona very happy by relinquishing him Barcelona province. He now has everything in his de jure area. It was nice, and it gave me my third largest army in my demesne, but I need to clear up some guys.

I give away the County of Aracena. I then hand over Niebla as well.

Here are the provinces currently in my demesne -

Alto Aragon - have to keep
Mallorca - wealthiest need to keep
Valencia - centrally located, second most forces
Toledo - On battlefront, building up very nicely, with decent money and military
Valladolid - Want to build up
Soria - Want to build up
Granada - Recently converted, working on building up economy
Malaga - Currently trying to convert.
Algieras, Seville, Cadiz - Recently captured, want to keep to help along
Zaragoza - Trying to keep building up, gives me second largest amount of dollars

I have to drop two. It's rough, but I decide to get rid of Malaga. I hand it to a new Count. It wasn;t making me any money or troops, and I have too many of those in my areas. I also send away Valladolid. It's the weaker of it and Soria.

I lost my Chaplain and Steward, so I get more and order my new oneto begin conversion of Seville.

I use ransom money and a Papal donation to purchase a city in Soria

I'll give you a map in six years, for the 100 Year Review

14 Dec - Sancho IV is now known as The Noble

22 June, 1159 - I've been watching the Holy War with keen interest. I was wondering if the Moslims would send their troops up now that their war with me is done and they are marching troops through my territory to get north. A province in Badajoz's Duchy is rebelling against the Aftasid

30 Aug - Ended

18 Sept - I order training grounds built in Jaca

King Ramiro, 23

11 Diplo, 20 Martial, 10 Steward, 4 Intrigue, 1 Learning

Brilliant Strategist, Zealous, Wroth, Brave, Honest, Charitable

Trickster, Heavy Infantry Leader

Two sons, one daughter. Pedro, age 5, Ramiro II age 4, and Aragonta age 1, respectively.

I send out a few gifts to keep people happy

My new Marshal is the Count of Castellon - everyone else is kept. I like giving Loarre to the new kid, as a holding, because unlike a County or Duchy, they don't have established courtiers i the middle of things you have to interrupt. So the conversion mission to Seville continues, for example

We have a demesne of 11 instead of 10, and the extra Barony of Loarre fits in fine.

Luckily we had a lot of cash from the Barony for gifts. I usurp the Kingdom of Castille title, so I am now the King of Castille. I will use this title to help me absorb the rest of the Castillian possessions in the de jure Kingdom.

Time for the 100 Year Report

Due to our successful Crusade and King of Jerusalem title, a lot of things have change numbers wise. Let's look at the Levant first:

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg825/scaled.php?server=825&filename=jerusalem1166.jpg&res=landing

Its hard to see, because the map is obscured by all of the European forces in the way. All of the Aragon Brown is ours. The Kingdom stretches from the Negev and Gaza up through Acre. Some of the provinces to the east are part of the de jure Kingdom of Jerusalem, I can expand a bit if I want.

Abe Sargent

Alright, here's Iberia:

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg41/scaled.php?server=41&filename=iberia1166.jpg&res=landing

As can be seen, we have expanded deeply into Iberia. With the loss of Castille, we are the only manpower here, although France has the weight to expand if they really wanted to. I expect to go north before west, and to absorb land that actually makes me money before moving to other lands. My son has a claim on Navarra, so I can go that way then. I want to take Catholic lands before I go elsewhere.

I'm trying to get through High Crown Authority. Let's suss out Jerusalem. I give out all of my provinces save Jerusalem itself

I create the Duchy of Galilee and hand it to the Count of Tiberis. Tiberias, Beirut, Safed and Tyrus are under it. I can;t usurp the Ascalon Duchy, the owner is at war. I gave away everything save Jerusalem

All provinces are Shia. All are a Levantine culture save Darum, which is Egyptian.

Jerusalem - Capital of Mirabel, 10.6 base tax and 6.5 fort: Barony of Rammala, 5.9 base and 5 fort; Bishopric of Jerusalem, 8 base tax; City of Nablus, 12.8 and 2.5; City of Sint Samuel, 12.8 and 1.7

I'll skip the long and boring list of the rest. I order a Barony built here and a Town Market in St Samuel. I send my Chaplain to convert the population to Catholicism

Abe Sargent

5 Dec - We pass High Crown Authority - this is good because now I can move to a Primogeniture inheritance in the future

26 Dec - Almeria has been converted to Catholicism

19 Jan, 1167 - We have vassalized the County of Burgos. Its in the realm of Castille and it was beaten again and again by Moslims, and we've just done something marvelous, so I pushed and got him to join our crown

Burgos - Castillian and Catholic, north adn west of Soria and Valadolid, east of Leon, west of Navarra in Najera, and south of Vescaya, and the two Asturias provinces. It's county captial is Palencia, 10.6 bae ta, 6.5 fort; Barony of Castrobarte, 5.9 and 4.5; Barony of Carrio, 4 base tax, 3 fort; City of Burgos rocking 21.6 and 2.5; and the Bishopric of Silos with 12.1 and 3.5. It's a nice province to inherit.

The HRE is fighting for Sardinia with our Arabic a neighbor. I DOW de jure for their Asturias province. I order my troops to Zamora.

it may be the time to pay the piper
I assemble troops from all over and begin to move them to make some armies. We need to be prepared now

17 Aug - We defeat a force of 3340 in Cadiz

I wish we hadn;t been at this major war, because our foe, the Almoravids have been hemorrhaging vassals an being i a lot of wars. We could really have expanded. Maybe the Jihad will end while I still have my forces assemble and with a window.

31 Oct - I have a plan and shift my forces around

4 May - We've had a 100% war score in our favor for a while. France has been blasting small forces in Rosello and Empuries and currently has 5500 troops stationed in Foix. Another 8000 is in Iberia proper with us

I'm a bit disappointed that I've been paying for a war with all of my armies active and such for years, and it's hurt my economic and military development, and i haven't gotten anything out of it. So I'm going to dismiss all of my armies, save for the Knights, declare war, and then reassemble them. That way I can get some territory out of this.

4 May, 1181 - I declare Holy War on the suddenly independent Emirate of Lisboa

I order the Knights into Mertola to being a siege, and I order my troops to assemble.

5 July - Tyrus has converted

7 July - My besieging army is now at 9746 and I am assembling other armies

11 July - We have a major problem. My grandson is an imbecile. That gives him -8 to all stats. I convince my son to send him to a Mastermind Theologian to give him a good church scholarship, and in a few years, we can send him off to a Bishopric while we focus on his second son - Diego Perez

20 July - We win a major battle in Evora against their army

1 Aug - Revolt in Alcantara where I have an army stationed, it wil be defeated in a few days

31 Jan - My wife has died.

4 February - I marry a daughter of the Emperor of Byzantium

12 Feb The first holding in Lisboa is ours.

We have won the Holy War

I order a new city in Lisboa. Here are the provinces we captured

Lisboa - Andalusian and Sunni, Castle of Lisboa has 10.8 bse tax and 7.5 fort, City of Setubal has 25.8 base tax and 3 fort and Bishopric of Alcobaca has 8 base tax.

Evora - Castle of Evora rocks 10.6 base tax and 6.5 fort, Bishopric of Ouguea has just a 4 base tax and a 3 fort; Bishopric of Avis rocks 8 base tax and City of Portalegre is 12.8 and 3 - also Andalusian and Sunni

I hand away all four counties, and later, when I can claim the Duchy tile, I'll hand it over as well.

I disarm all of my armies save the Knights. We are not done yet

Abe Sargent

I disband all of my troops

Silves - Andausian and Sunni, 13.8 base tax is the Capital of SIlves, with 7.5 fort; Barony of Almodovar has 4 base tax and 3 fort; Lagos city rocks 15.8 an 3 and the Aljustrel Bishopric has 8

Faro - Andalusian and Sunni, i order a new city built here. Capital of Faro, 13.8 and 7.5; Loule Bishopric has the expected 8 and 0 and City of Tavria with 25.8 and 3

I create the Duchy of Algarve. I give away both counties and the Duchy title

And now I'm done, having taken most of the lands in Iberia still in Moslim control. The only lands left are five provinces controlled by our regular enemies the Almoravids. Other than that, the rest of the land is under control of France, Navarra, Leon, Galicia and us. Soon we'll be turning our eyes north.

24 Sept - Rebels in Safed are down

I purchase the Knights Templar and send them to the Holy Land. Because of this Holy War with Turks, we qualify as fighting infidels, and will pay no upkeep.

King Pedro, 30

Another good warrior. He has inherited his mother's weak claim on Navarra, and you can expect me to move on that if an opportunity presents itself.

I need to drop a province, and I know where and what. I hand the County of Soria away. I then create the Duchy of Castille. I give the Duchy to the Count of Asturias de Santillana

I usurp the Duchy of Outrejordain and hand it to the Count of Madba, This removes the very ornery Count of Negev from my worry. Two more provinces are in that de jure area, but we do not control them,

My children are Pedro II who is craven and an imbecile, and Diego Perez, 9 years old.

24 May - I fulfill my ambition to amass wealth. This gives me an extra Stewardship, which allows me to hold an extra holding in my demesne. My next ambition is to be a Paragon of Virtue

1 Nov - I order a Portcullis in Gibraltar and a Medium Stone Wall in Loarre

1 Jan, 1187 The City of Provencana is built in Barcelona. I order a Town Market built and hand it over.

24 Jan - Madaba has converted

2 Mar - With the Almoravids involved in a major project in the south against another nation, I decide to make a move

This is a Holy War for Portucale - four provinces.

Here we go

I assemble much, but not all of my forces

25 Apr - We win a battle in Castelo Branco

19 June - The first holding in Castelo Branco is ours. They're besieging Lisboa.

13 July - The next holding falls as well

1 Aug - AS does the 3rd and we have the province now

18 Sep - 5000 troops are moving to assist their friends here

26 Oct - We defeat the large army

7 Dec - The first holding in Coimbra fall

26 Dec - The first holding in Braganca is ours too

6 Jan, 1188 - We assault and take Coimbra holding #2 I'm doing a lot of assaulting because they are bringing up a 11000 strong army.

16 Jan - The next holding in Cimbra is ours

29 Jan - Holding #4 at Coimbra and we have the full provinces

1 Feb - 2n holding i Braganca falls

21 March - Their army arrived and was smashing a 8k army of mine but I moved my other 7k army an it arrived on 1 Mar, and we fought a nasty battle. At the end, we broke their major army, and dispirited, we get peace for the Duchy of Portucale

Porto - Maghreb and Sunni, Porto is Capital, with 7.9 base tax, 5.5 fort; City if Guimaraes, 21.8 and 3; Barony of Moncao, 4 an 3; Barony of Viana do Castelo 7.9 and 5.5 and finally Braga Bishopric, 8

Braganca - Portuguese and Sunni. Braganca is the capital with 10.6 and 6.5; City of Vila Real with 12.8 and 2.5 and two Bishoprics, Azinhoso and Chaves

Coimbra - Maghreb and Sunni - Coimbra is the capital and gets 5.9 base tax and 4.5 forting; Barony of Penela has 5.7 and 3.5; City of Avein with 21.8 and 3 and the Bishopric of Viscu, 8.

Castelo Branco, Sunni and Portugese, Castelo branco is the capital of the county with 7.9 and 4.5; Guarda Bishopric 8; and Covilha CIty with 12.8 and 3 fort

I hand away all provinces, create the Duchy of Portucale, and give it to the nw Count of Porto

During the war, France reabsorbed a one province county. The Almoraids have just three provinces left - Santiago, Zamora, and Astorga. each is in a different duchy and thus each will need a separate war or claim

Abe Sargent
08-31-2012, 09:23 PM
17 May - I gain the Scholar Trait

Major news today. Coruna, the empty province that was absorbed by France has rebelled and now fighting a war against them. I can take it.

I declare myself King of Galicia

I declare war on Coruna, with a de jure claim

Because of their revolt, all forces will be our enemy, French or Corunan, but it's worth a shot. Let's arrange a huge army

11 Jan, 1189 - We defeat their army.

10 Feb - We take the first holding

20 Feb - The second one falls and we take the peace terms with 100 war score. We have gained Coruna

Coruna - Portugese and Catholic, this province has three holdings under the control of the Countess that was already in control. A Corunna is the cap with 8.1 and 6.5; Bishopric of Mondofiedo with 10.1 and 3; and finally city of Lugo with 30.6 and 1.6

We struck quickly and took it before France could get it back. I'm very happy with that.

1 Aprl, 1190 - Rebellion in Coruna

20 June- That rebellion is ended as well

I order a Bishopric built in Molina

8 July - The Duke of Acalon passed and I gain the title back. I get the 600 or so god the guy had. I order a City here. Then I give teh County away and the Duke title to the Count of Darum rather than Ascalon, because I feel the young teen would be a better choice long term.

I don;t know how, but I've gained Irbid in Jerusalem. It's a county next to Madaba, Safed, Tiberias and Tyrus. The Duke i charge has even converted to Catholicism without my assistance. I don't know what happened. I have to believe that if this was the Knights, they would have placed a European in charge of the province. Oh wait, never mind. It's my Duke in Madaba. He must have conquered Irbid and I'm not sure how. Well, good for him!

He was slain in a suspicious accident - we were not discovered. Very nicely done

14 July - Semsem is the newest city in Ascalon. I hand it over.

3 October - Our Court Chaplain passes, and I appoint Bishop Flain of Xativa with a 19 learning, as my next guy

10 Mar - The Almoravids are attacking the Leonese in a new Holy War - Leon has the Knights Templar on their side and already captured a holding of the Almoravids

I use this opportunity. I declare Holy War for Asturias, which is one province Astorga

I assemble one army for sieging and another at Algiercas and Gibraltar.

There are just two provinces in Iberia which are not mine - Zamora and Leon - both are in Moslim hands

The Almravids have been badly divided and don't control these two small provinces. So let's push

I declare Holy War on both of these small provinces

I hire the Teutonic Order to assist - I'll use them while my forces recuperate

6 June - My Spymaster passes and I appoint my wife to the role

31 Oct - We have captured all six holdings in Leon

11 Dec - All three holdings in Zamora are ours. We take them both and win both wars

Zamora - Castilian and Sunni, Zmra is capital with 7.9 base tax and 4.5 fort. Benavente is a Bishopric with 8 and the city of Toro has 1.8 and 1.7 fort

Leon - 10.6 base tax, Castilian and Sunni, 65 fort, City f Villablino has 12. base tax, 2.5 fort; base tax and 8.1

I order a city in Zamora and then hand it away. I hand away Leon as well. I create the Duchy of Leon and give it to the Count of Leon, who oversees Salamanca and Zamora as well.

I'd show you a map but it's pretty boring. :) This was not my original intent when beginning this dynasty. I figured that I would share Iberia with Castille, Leon, Galicia Navarra and later Portugal. I was going to get the traditional Aragonese silhouette in Iberia, and then move off like they did, as they ran into Castille. That was about to happen here too. But then Castile failed to grow after twice trying to get Cordoba's duchy. And Then Castille lost Toledos duchy. Then Castille stopped being pertinent just before being destroyed.

11 Dec - I order Medium Barrack in Gibraltar

So, in late 1204 we captured Iberia. Other than that we have just Malta and Jerusalem

I create the Empire of Hispania title. I am now an Emperor

Where do I go now? I mean, for a bit I'll stay here and regroup, but what and where next? France has all of Sicily, Southern Italy, and much of N Africa. The Holy Roman Empire has Sardinia and Corsica. The Byzantines have Cyprus and other smaller island (like Rhodes). So where?
I don't know. But first, i want to consolidate some holdings. Before, as I've kept onto possessions inside of traditional Duchy, I've not created or handed out the Duke title, but now I am. So, for example, the Duchy of Seville has five provinces, three of which currently have a Cout and two of which are under my control. I create the Duchy of Seville title, and then give it to the Count of Aracena. That reduces my vassalage, which is what I'm trying to do. Then I transfer to him the Counties of Cadiz and Niebla, while I keep Seville and Algeciras to myself for now

Castellon, Valencia and Denia are in the Duchy of Valencia. I give it to the Countess of Denia and she also takes Castellon with her. I give the Duchy of Granada to the Count of Malaga. I hand the Duchy of Toledo to the Count of Molina. By doing this, I have reduced by vassals a bit I also spend some cash and gain some prestige.

The Blue blob to the west is France. You can also see the blue blob's tip of Italy under my picture in the upper left corner. We are both Hispania brownish orangish color. As you can see, I neatly leapfrogged French expansion in the area by taking Alexandria first. I don't expect to expand southerly, but if I can go eastward along the shore to connect to the Kingdom of Jerusalem, that makes sense. You can see the large Rohaid green to the west, east, and south of my various holdings here.

The Byzantine pink s bronk in places, and disjoined in parts of Turkey. Meanwhile, places such as Rhodes, Crete, and Cyprus that make sense for a poor boy like me are all fully Byzanium;s holdings. I'd love to take some islands here. As of right ow, it;s not happening. And France took places that are historically Aragon's, such as Sicily and Italy. So I had to come here, and this made sense.

Now all I need to do is take Sinai later and we'll have that land bridge

Quattara has gone indy from France, and it's in the Alexandria demesne, so I claim a de jure war against them

23 Oct - 8000 of our troop arrive to assault Quattara

21 Nov - We assault it, take it, and its ours. It goes under my son's title, since it's in his demesne. This was more about taking land from France than it was about anything else

Quattara - This inland province is west of Buhairya, southwest o Alexandria, northwest of Gizeh and south of Al Alamayn. It's Egyptian and Sunni. It comes with Count Rorgues who is Frankish and Catholic. Cara is the capital with 8.1 and 6.5 fort. Siwa is the Bishopric with 8 base tax and no development. There is no room for anything else to be built. Its a very poor province, but again, this was about fighting the French, rather than anything else.

I make my second son Marshal.

My heir is now his first born son,15 year old Ramiro. We'll see him in a bit, but I can;t impact his marriage, because he's a vassal. I could have him marry one of my courtiers, but I have to hope he can do better

23 Mar, 1236 - Today something amazing happened. My Chancellor gave me great news. He has fabricated claims, not for one province but for the entire Duchy of Sicily! Now we have to press that in war before I die, my heirs won't get it But if I can...

I go to war for Sicily

30 Aug - Dax is ours

31 Aug - We get a peace offer and take Sicily. France is in a ton of wars right now and can;t handle it.

Messina - Greek and Catholic, I order a city built here. Taormina is capital with 8.1 base tax and 6.5 fort. Lipari's Bishop has 12.1 base tax and 3.5 fort and the beautiful city of Messina rocks 30.8 base tx and 2.5 fort level.

Siracusa - currently under the control of Countess Eleonore, Maghreb and Catholic. Caltairone is the castle admin runs out of with 7.9 and 4.5. Barony of Augusta has 5.7 and 3.5, while the Bishopric of Letini rolls with 10.1 and 2.5 and the town of Syracusa has 30.8 and 2.1.

Girenti - Count Nicolau rules a Catholic Maghreb society out of Caltabelotta, with 10.8 base and 7.5 fort. Also here are the Bishopric of Grigenti (12.3 & 4.5) and City of Butera (38.8 & 3)

Trapani - Catholic Maghrebs work out of Erice making 7.9 base taxfrom a 5.5 fort level castle. They live in Mazara making 30.8 tax ad a 3.0 wall to defend their homes and they worship at Trapani's lovely Bishopric with 10.3 tax level made and a 4.0 defense against bandits or incursions.

Palermo - Meghreb, Catholic. Monreale has 8.3 and 7.5; City of Palermo has 34.8 and 3; Bishop Ceflu with 10.3 and 3; Baron Grateri with 8.1 and 6.5

I grant Palermo s a County to Diego Perez, the really nice looking second son of Diego, the dead first son of mine and my grand son and second heir (and who would be a much better heir than his brother). I hand away Trapani and Messina, and I make DP the Duke of Sicily. This also gives him Malta, in addition to the above counties.

(Diego Perez has these stats:15, 8, 6, 9 and 21. His older brother has these right now: 8, 8, 0, 3, 2 and let's just say he didn't marry well she has 4, 4, 7, 12, and 3).

9 Nov - Fernando gets Brilliant Strategist just like me, is mentor. He is 5, 16, 10, 11, and 6. Not bad, and with the right wife, could get even better.

15 Nov - Before he turns one, our infant son Antonio has passed away. I have now outlived all three of my sons. A lot family deaths recently

My heir has some great abilities - Stutter, Sloth, Content, Arbitrary. (he's also Zealous and a Tough Soldier). He'd be a bad Emperor. I can't get enough people to support my plot. But what if I just assassinated him? It would cost 450 gold, which I have. There is just a 10% chance of discovery, which is really good. There is a 43% chance of success. Let's do it

The attempt works, but we are discovered. I lose Piety, and I have gained Kinslayer -3 to diplomacy and people like me less. But my heir is now the good Duke of Sicily. I'm 60, trh Kinslayer effect won't last long. Now let's just hope that Duke Diego can marry well

I order all of my non-mercenary troops to stand down and move my mercs to Corsica and a boat off Corsica. Mercs has a decent upkeep, but a stiff sticker price. What I intend to do is to use them against the HRE for my war for Sardinia. I'll look at Sinai later, after I've gotten everything in order.

The other reason I'm pushing Sardinia now is becuase I'm 61 and I lose my claims when I die on Arborea and Cagliari

In the meantime, i create the Duke fo Sinai title and hand everythign away

1 May - Farama converts

20 May = We are ready. I have troops of the coast of Cagliari and troops in Corsica ready to move in - I declare war against teh Holy Roman Empire.

29 May - We swept asidea mdest defense and began a siege in Cagliari

6 June - THe DUke of Alxandria uses this as a chance to declare wwar against me while I am distracted with the HRE. When I'm done here, I'll focus on him.

17 June - Modest victry in Arborea agains their minor forces and a siege beins

29 June - 1st holding of Cag is ours

8 July - #2 falls

19 July - #3 and 4 are ours and the province is with our flag right now

2 Seot - I combine my forces and take Arborea's 3 holdings

Messina's new city is called Torregrota

I assemble my Alexandrian army with me at the head and move to a sieg in EgyptI want tostop

8 Sept - 9000 troops arrie in N Italy to begin taking land from the HRE

14 ept - Our troops from the islands have boarded my fleet - I carry them to another province to take it too

5 Oct - After crushing an army of 10000 Germans in Genoa, we begin a siege

27 Oct - I defeat my son's roops in Pelucia

29 Nv - I combined my armies to take ou a 16000 strong HRE force

Dec 15 - We crush their armies again

Jan 3, 1239 - We take Genoa on an assault

Jan 20 - And the next holding

Feb 15 And the next

Peace is offered for Sardinia and I accept

And now to my grandson, the Duke of Alexandria

29 Mar - 14000 of my troops (Mercs) arrive and I find that Alxadria is under a Holy War to recapture it. That's what happens when you go solo. One holding is already captured and others under siege.

15 April - I oust the first set of 5000 ish troops from Al Alamayn

27 May 0 I smash the 3500 roops besieging Quattara.

7 July - We capture both holdings of Quattara

21 Aug - 1st two holdings of Al Almayn are ours

23 Sept - We take Al Alamayn.

25 Sept - Realizing he needs to make peace with us, my grandson offers to return to our fold and become incarcerated. We had captured the holdings already taken by the Moslims.

I have to execute my grandson - his personal greed led to him trying to go on his own, killing thousands for it in war, and almost losing Alexandria to the Moslims. I must finish him off.

I began this game in 1066. Today, in 1239, I truly feel like I've accomplished what I want. I took all of Hispania becuase it was open, and someone had to step up. I moved into Egypt and Alexadria only to stop France, but you can look at my Egyptian and Levantine holdings as similiar in posture to Aragon's Southern Italy and Greek holdings I have fewer islands than Aragon, but I still took the Balearic Isles, Sardinia, Corsica, Malta and Sicily. I resisted the temptation to cross the strait to Tangiers and onward, or to move into France or other mailand provinces. The Mongols aren't anyhere near me right now in Persia, although perhaps in 20 years they could reach the Levant. The Golden Horde has not captured any land at all, and I don;t know where they re or what they are doing.

If I were to play this campaign to its conclusion, I'm just roughly half way through. What would be next? I sent my Chancellor to make claims in Rhodes. The Duke of Sicily has yet to take a wife, so if I died soon, I woud have a chance to choose my own wife. Perhaps I would force Southern Italy with France. Perhaps I would begin to drift meo nto North Africa. At this point, I beleive I have puhed history as far as it can go. All of this is a what if. What if Aragon reached it maximum expnsion in Iberia, and looked out and saw that Castille was shriking and he other powers retreating? What if Aragon took most of the Peninua instead of Castille? What if Aragon used this might to fund troops in a successful Crusade for Jerusalem? But at this point, we've reached it. I just don't see a real life power contining much. Oh I think a real power would still covet more, but we are the Mediterranenean power. We look to be one of the strongest economies in Europe and one of the biggest armies as well. I didn;t touch my own military for most of the wars we just waged, instead usig mercs and holy orders for Sinai, the HRE conflict and the Duchy war. That allows me to build up my manpower. I could call on 109k troops if I needed to, and more than 1000 ships.

Abe Sargent
09-05-2012, 12:11 AM
Let's look at the Ledger

By size, we are the second largest realm, only the HRE is larger. We are ninety holdings bigger than the Byzatines in 3rd.

Top ten nations by size:

HRE
Hispania
Byzantium
France
Ruhenia
Egypt
Ilkhanate
Persia
Poland
England

I was hoping to see more about money, but I can't. Because of stolen tech and the more advanced Moslims, we are more advanced than many other nations. Alto Aragon is 8, 16 and 16 with its techs. Paris is 9, 15, 11. Weimar is 9, 8 and 9. Rome is 12, 13 and 9 England has none in the double digits. Krakow is 8, 11 and 8. You get the idea.

Now, add the might to our nation from the economic wealth of the places still Mslim which are not giving us soldiers or money. In 15-20 years after they've been converted and grown, we have more money and men. What would a real life ruler do to better that? Then add in all od those cities that will be built in the lands we took. We can build one city a year with the money coming in. Eventually we can;t add any more, but it'll be a while. We are barely in the footstep of the Mongols, so we have no worries there. Even if they arrived, a full blown war, with 110k troops plus a Holy Order and some mercs and you have nothing to worry about. No one is a threat, and when that happens, nations rarely continue to push, becuase they have arrived at greatness. We are great.

Would I like to see my grandson as the next King an move forward? Sure. But we don't need to. We have no expansion opportunities that are obvious, and no more Moors breathing down our necks or France's shadow cast long over us. We stand on our own.

And thus my dynasty ends.

You can see our color. We are on both sides. Iberia is all ours, and has been for a while. You can see our colors in the central isles of the Great Sea. To the east, you can see our lands, connected, from Beirut and north of it to Alexandria and west of it, we have the whole landscape.

the French Empire is very obvious. Now, add the provinces it has in Iberia and Sicily to it, and you can see how much of an issue our French neighbors were becoming. You an also imagine if teh blue blob ran into Alexandria and Egypt. We had to move in and stop them. I'd be willing to fight and win a war with France if they protested. (The two blue provinces east of S Italy and across the sea are also French).

You can actually see a bit of the Khaganate, the lower Horde. That puce green to the right of Cumania is there. They run down the back side of the Caspian. You can see how far away they run. They are no threat right now to me. They actally end just off the map in the south, and so if they made a beeline for Jerusalem, they would have to enounter the Rohaids, various Persians, and the Byzantines, and you can bet I'd support them in any war against the Mongols.

Another major winner is Poland. You can see them in Denmark, the Baltic Holdings of Estonia and Latvia and in Finland. Along with us and France, they are real winners of this run through history.

My Prestige, Piety and Gold can be seen. When I turn over a land to a vassal, I always spend as much gold as possible to build up things in the provinces before I do. I usually try to build something economic so my vassal will be getting more money.

Alright, now for the part that is often people's favorite. Abe's evaluation of the new game system he just played. As many of you know, Crusader Kings is my 4th favorite game of all time, and I rate its sequel very highly - it was a great game, and I'll come back to it more, no question.

The ideas of holdings is brilliant. Its more realistic, works as game mechanic, and changes these grand historial games. It took me a while to figure things out (for example, my first few wars I just took the first holding and left. Thats why some of the peaces took a long time to come from the enemy.). Once I did, I was set, and I now have them intuitively in me.

I also love the new traits - they really did a good job on making the aspects of Crusader Kings that appealed, such as marrying, children, and more even better. With all of these new traits, the whole system felt new and fresh.

I also liked some of the minor tweaks. You can make someone a bit happier by sending a gift, but you can't send a bunch of gifts to make them happy, and it onlyworks for a few years. That I enjoyed, because it makes sense and removed a cheese element to the game. I enjoy a low fromage content in my games.

It was harder to keep my realm together in some ways. I could only give one gift, and I felt things such a Ambitious or othe rtraits really played a role in my realm sticking together However, in the old game, a low diplo score hurt your ability to keep your vassals in line, and I didn;t feel like diplo did much in this game with my own realm

I enjoy plots at first, but I had few opprotunities to do any ambitions, and those that I had were boring. I also found myself unable to do plots that I really wantd, such as against certain Dukes. I wish I could tell it to choose a Plot to revoke a title or assassinate a person, and then tell it who i wanted. That's the sort of flexiblity that makes sense.

I felt like my Marshal wasnt that good, because he didn;t automatically go out and lead armies, and speeding up regen rates for you troops in one province by a bit was't a big enouh advantage. The Chancellor was great ,the Spymaster fine, the Bishop needed and the Steward obvious, but the Marshal seeemed a bit underhelming. I'd like more for him to do or for him to do it better.

I still see dumb AI decisions. Why does the Duke of Alexandria go rogue when A), it has about 1500 troops total to draw on because all of its provinces save one are still Moslim, and B). surrounded by Egypt, France or Me, all of which have expansionist eyes and have tens of thousands of troops on call at an moment? Why would any person who is competant and cpable ta that risk. I uld understand it o rinciple - We are Moslems, and die we may, but we are not going to die under the Catholic yoke! I got that, I feel that. But why else, I don;t know. Perhaps they were hoping for international assistance, but who would help them against us? The Byzantines are our allies, the HRE doesn;t care, Egypt and France would rather take them themselves.

I would also like teh ability to see what happened in other countries. I still don't know what happened to bring Sicily back into the French fold after winning independance in a war.

More diplomatic options are great. I like a lot of them I wish I could ask or tell my vassals to knock off their minor petty wars. I wish I could join one of those sides in a war. Once Navarra was attacked, and I wanted to join them and end it immediately, but I wasn't allowed. When my vassals are acting like idiots, I want to get involved

Anyway, my overall view is that it was good. Yay!

The marshall didn't lead your troops automatically because he couldn't do that if he was in a province doing a job for you. Just in case you weren't aware of that as the cause of the issue you had.
