One of my best friends was killed in an ATV accident last night. He was one of the funniest guys I know. In his younger years he was a little socially awkward but when I got to know him he was quite the guy. So many good memories and stories running through my head right now..... like the time I had a little too much to drink and passed out outside my dorm room with my pants down. Good friend that he was, he simply put a towel over me (as opposed to helping me back to my room). Or the countless drives we'd take into the rural backwaters to find the craziest people we could find....
Ahhh damn, I'm going to miss the hell out of him. RIP Schaef

Sorry for your loss.
I know there is a culture among some folks that really love riding ATVs, but they are bad news in my opinion. The first person from my high school class to pass away died on one in a similarly tragic manner. Way too many unnecessary injuries and deaths around here. I hope my kid never wants to ride them.

Sorry man. I'm sitting here one day after my wife lost her grandma suddenly. Her Grandma was the most influential person in her life (her real parents are useless.) It's more like her losing her mother.
Sorry to hear about your friend. It's just setting up to be that kind of week.

Indeed.... speed, inexperience, and no helmet are what did it. My dad is into ATV riding out in the desert (he winters in Arizona) and he witnessed a relative have a terrible crash (and survive... helmets save lives). That made him trade in his regular quad and he bought a Razr which is much safer.
I've never gotten into it myself and at this point I can't say I'll be running out and getting an ATV anytime soon.... No problems with those that do but for fuck's sake wear a helmet.

I think back to the only time I rode one. I was probably 13-14 and it was a three wheeler on a farm. I didn't wipe out, but I know looking back as a parent, I should have been scared shitless with some of the stuff I did, (full throttle, in a field, no helmet, first time three wheeler). I can't even imagine letting my kids do that.

So I just spent a few hours with his parents. I'm so glad I did that. He was pretty private with his social life when it comes to his parents so it was really therapeutic for them and all of us to get together and share some really funny stories about him that they didn't know about.
The kicker in this whole situation is that a whole group of us friends were heading out to Maine for a wedding of another friend (we're all connected from high school). The wake is scheduled for Friday and we are all heading out either Wednesday or Thursday. I was pretty well set on not going to Maine until his parent's insisted we all go. While missing the wake will be tough, I'm thinking maybe in the next few months about throwing a good old fashioned party in his honor as that's probably how he'd have had it anyway.
