Know there are people here with ties...

Allegedly a man called in with a threat that bombs were placed "all over campus".

Also apparently a bomb threat on North Dakota State campus.

When I was in high school in the late 80's our school get evacuated one year for bomb threats about 20 times. The caller realized there wasn't much the school can do since they obviously aren't going to keep you inside and have a bomb go off. Of course if this had happened nowadays we would probably be on CNN. I never really understood them though. Has there even been one occurance of an actual bomb after a called in threat?

Not sure in the US, but over in the UK the IRA would often times call in before a bomb detonated.

Same thing happened to a private college I went to in the 90s. It started happening so often that they eventually stopped evacuating us from the school. It went from sending us home, to sending us out in the parking lot while the cops went through the building, to just notifying us that it happened.

Same here. Turned out it was a former student who was calling from a pay phone at the front of the school.

Not a called-in bomb, but I recently watched an episode of I Survived about this:

I'm surprised I'd never heard of it before.

Oh they still go on all the time. Our local high school has had several a year since I've been here. It doesn't quite make CNN I don't think. At least not around here.

They should use extraordinary rendition the people who think this is just a harmless prank.

Or at least make the penalty so severe that nobody will do it.

Any time I've ever heard someone get caught it was just a "clever" high school student who did it. I'm not sure solitary confinement is the answer.

How about a year in jail?

Back when I still worked at Starbucks a high school kid called in a bomb threat to his HS (right down the street from us) from the payphone out in front of our store. Of course the security cameras pointed at our registers had a clear view of the payphone, so the cops were REAL interested in those tapes, and got enough off them to catch the kid.

Good times.

Louisiana State University campus evacuated after bomb threat - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/17/justice/louisiana-bomb-threat/index.html?hpt=hp_t3)

Jets searched, cleared at JFK after threat (http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/17/us/new-york-aircraft-threat/index.html?hpt=hp_t3)

I wonder how often these things normally happen.

The school in my hometown has now had 7 bomb threats this year. Supposedly a 7th grader was hauled off this week, and then they had another threat today. At what point do you just completely ignore these threats? 30 minutes to search the school probably isn't enough to find a bomb. Evacuating the building is a major pain in the ass I'd imagine. Punishment needs to be severe for this type of thing, I'd look the other way if they wanted to cane these kids(i think).
