This is what happens when you try to apply what you learn on the Intartubez in a court of law.

What was the guy trying to do? What there a point to him trying to pick a fight, or did he just want to push someone into a civil rights violation? And then what?

I'm usually one who is firmly in the camp of personal liberties, but that guy not only deserved the taze, he needed it. If only he had used the phrase, "negative, I am a meat popsicle", he might have been able to pull it off.

The tasing was completely viscerally satisfying. Just unnecessary.

The fact that 50 people or so die per year via tazering is a bit unsettling. How the cop could just whip it out and shoot him, presumably knowledgeable of this, is amazing.

Granted this asshat hopefully being one of the 50 is preferably superior to it being an elderly woman who gets tazed and die.

BrianD

It looked like the guy was going to keep escalating until he was physically restrained. One would think that two guards could restrain one guy with a camera, but this was a pretty sure way to incapacitate the guy while not completely abandoning their post. I'm not terribly concerned about the danger of tazers with people who are picking a fight.

Cool - he should start his own country.

I don't think it is a fact that 50 or so people die per year via being tased. I don't think 50 people have died via being tased since its inception.

Admittedly that article plays with the wording. Maybe it is only 5 a year...I really only googled for a headline.

09-18-2012, 11:16 PM
If you read the article, towards the middle it states that most of the deaths are attributed to other causes and another portion are undetermined.

I do not mind, however, people taking a critical look at police use of force including taser use and trying to constantly improve law enforcement policies, practices, and tactics. My opinion, though, is that Amnesty International is really missing the boat regarding tasers. I feel that a taser application as an alternative to, say, hitting or wrestling someone or using a stick is much safer for the cop and the subject.

The other thing you have to look at is would it be more dangerous for a violent altercation to take place in a confined space with lots of other people. Sometimes a quick taze is the best solution. They seemed to use the minimum amount necessary and it's not like he didn't get a warning.

One other thing, but I'm getting sick of people like this. People so desperate to fucking martyr themselves that they just stir up shit for no reason and then whine about the repercussions. The Occupy protests had a lot of that going on. Do something illegal, refuse to surrender to police, then scream and cry about police when they arrest you. Just fuck off and leave the rest of us normal people alone. No one wants you massive narcissists around.

So the full video of his interaction is online, evidently posted by....his mother, who was there for this entire incident. There was also another younger kid, I'm guessing 15ish, seems like his little brother. Watching the whole thing is...just wow. It's a 4-part video, total of around 22 minutes. It starts with him being a jackass about being searched as he enters the courthouse. This guy doesn't have any mental illness; he's just a bigger world-class douchebag than the short video shows. Now that I've seen the whole thing, I reverse my agreement with Subby on "overreaction." Before the video posted here ever started, he snuck the camera into another courtroom and flat-out refused to turn it off or leave when instructed to do so. I say he should have been tased and/or cuffed before the segment we see here even started.

It starts here: Tazed 1 of 4 Non-Agressive Unarmed Man - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eDh-yzr_qI)

Video 2 is where I think he should have been tased or cuffed, somewhere around the 6:45 mark at the latest.

Judging from who posted the youtube videos, it sounds like his mom is a nut too.It appears that she is close by for the entire 22ish minutes, including when he says something along the lines of "What are they gonna do, tase me? It's not like I haven't been tased before." Given her posting of the video, the legal mumbo-jumbo included with it, and her apparent complicity with his behavior, I'm wondering if the family is in some weirdo anti-government/anarchist/cult/something group.

Believe he is a sovereign citizen.Heh, a search on his name and sovereign citizen pulls up several hits, including a few articles saying that he is part of that movement. Yeah, not shocking at all. From watch the four-part vid this morning, it seemed clear that he is no mere generic douchebag. No, this guy is a douchebag with an agenda. ;)

I like how the mom labels the YT video "non-aggressive" - as if showing up to a courthouse and claiming not to be subject to any laws isn't some form of an aggressive act in and of itself.
