View Full Version : OT: A "real" FOF debate?

Since so many people here seem to be interested in discussing, debating, and arguing matters of all sorts, it strikes me... maybe we should try to host an actual, organized debate.

The idea - someone (one or more people) act as judges, and govern over a structured discussion of a particular topic. The judges set forth the question(s), define the parameters, and judge the outcome of the debate. Participants do, perhaps, some work in advance, and then make their arguments in the designate forum and manner. Presumaly, there would be some structure to this-- point/coubterpoint, judges' Q&A, that sort of thing.

I confess, my personal knowledge of formal debate is a little rusty and limited, but I'd be happy to take some organizational role, if needed. If anyone else out there has background in such things, I'm more than open to listening to how to set something like this up.

Seems to me that it woudl be easy to set this up to focus on a sports-related topic... though political or other issues aren;t at all off limits. I'm just trying to keep it ecumenical.

Any interest?

I think we SHOULD have a debate.

Thanks for that clarification. My first reaction that we certainly had been there, done that and do not want to ressurect that very dead horse.

I would definitely be interested in being a participant. A very active one at that.

I think the value of this idea is debatable.

My background in organized debate is pretty extensive, but I'm not sure anything I know from that experience would be helpful. A debate on this forum would be "unique," to say the least. I would also worry that a selection of judges would be very problematic on many issues. Good luck, though.

And I would gladly participate if it means I get to ignore the growing pile of work on my desk a little longer. :)

I nominate BuccAnreadyDoodyDo, John Galt, Mrs. Kippy, WSUCougar, and Senator as judges.

{Edit: Removed extra "and" to make better sense. It sounded like John Galt and Mrs. Kippy were an item!:eek: :eek: }

I hate all opinions, arguments and people. I think I'd make a great judge. :)

eh, you know me... I don't really like to share my personal opinions on the board. I better stay out of this.

I'll be a judge, but if not I'd probably join the bitchfest at one point or another.

I'm better at oral debates than written (as anyone who has read my posts can attest).

All I read from GrantDawg's last post:

I'd be down to participate in a debate...I remember the general structure of Policy (Team) Debate from my high school debate experience, but I don't remember the specifics.

I knew that someone would take it to the gutter. Of course, my wife might agree with that statement. :)

This is a great idea! While I have no formal debate training, I certainly love debating. :) Count me in!

Is this Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, or Ted Turner debate? Or college Parliamentary? Each one has a different method of judging. I think www.nflonline.org has some descriptions.
