Just doing a little research. Trying to see how small business owners created their website.

I was responsible for it. I looked around a bunch at a lot of different web design firms online and samples of their work, and finally chose one out in Utah (I don't see a particular reason why you have to go with someone physically close in this day and age) and had them do it for us.

As long as you have a clear concept of what you want your site to include it's pretty painless IMO.

Unless you have a good IT design background, have someone else do it. I spent around $4,000 on it. Best money I've spent. Have had tons of customers comment on how nice it is. I had him design it using a tool that allows me to enter/change info on the site with a Google Docs-like interface. Really easy to work with, which allows me to let my workers do a lot of the data/event input on the site rather than me having to do that work.

Obama called and wanted to let you know that business owners did not build their own websites...

Hey guys, I really appreciate the insights. The reason I am looking for this info is because I design websites for small businesses and am trying to decide the right market for Google Adwords/Bing Ads to advertise my company's service. I have been looking mostly for local clients but I may end up going national. I have been moderately successful in finding local clients, but ideally I want this to be a full time thing. For that, I will need to look beyond the Indianapolis area. Thanks again for the help!

I think one of the ways you could go about making it more national and zeroing in on keywords is by developing a niche. Now maybe it's not a specific industry, because that's tough to grow into a full-time thing, but a specific type of website (does that make sense, or do i have to give examples).

That actually makes a lot of sense and would probably cut down on the cost on some of the more general terms. I'll look into that for sure. Thanks.

No problem. I know for example when I was looking for ours I did google for a few different terms like "financial industry website design" or "broker dealer website design."

So whether it's a broadish industry (finance, medical, etc) or some other way of categorizing it - I think looking at it that way could make national advertising more affordable, and will also give you a "niche" where people will look at you as having more experience in their field and thus be comfortable with you.

My wife works for a small company and the local company they hired to do their marketing also manages their website.
