So last night while checking out the Week 9 NFL thread on FOFC during the Monday Night game...I looked down from the game and saw a page I hadn't navigated to. My first thought was...well that ad is a bit suggestive, then "Oh that IS a dildo, and look where it is"

The site was BADOINK, and it looked exactly like a page from the App Store. Now unfortunately I don't know if Operationsports redirected me there, or if I had clicked on a link from either the Week 9 thread or something else on FOFC.

Some Google searches led me to people thinking it was a "virus" or maybe an exploit of Safari, to conclusions that it is something a nefarious advertiser has buried in other legitimate advertising. People have wiped their devices, and still seen this recurring. Of note a couple of people are saying it happens to them frequently while visiting thechive.

So anyone one else bumping into this here or anywhere else.

So what's the problem?

There have been viruses in the FOFC ads before.

I've had a few ads here lately that redirect the browser on my phone to another site without opening up the forum. Not lucky enough to get any pornography yet though. :(

I haven't seen this happen on my iPad.

Not to be "that guy", but using tapatalk on your iOS device:

a. Is way cleaner to use
b. Avoids any issues with ads

That was actually something I was just about to look into right before The offending ad. Tapatalkwas getting good press in the app thread.

You can't get a virus on an iOS device.

Cough - oh yes you can, any computer based device can get a virus .... Apple is very good as persuading people they don't exist on their devices, but they do exist and as their marketshare increases so do the amount of targeted virus's.

I believe that was said tongue-in-cheek, probably in his best Steve Jobs impression.

Yeah. If you get a virus, you're holding it wrong.

While I was (mostly) joking I really think most novice users don't have to worry about iOS viruses or malware if they only download apps from the App Store.

Obviously the security of the App Store is only as good as Apple's own app vetting process but most novice users don't jailbreak or side load apps and can trust the overwhelming majority of apps in the App Store to do what they say they'll do.

I do wish that Apple had allowed Kaspersky to put their iOS security app in the App Store though.

While I don't think this qualifies as a virus, I am pretty sure that somebody is exploiting a security hole in Apple's safari browser. As this thing took over the active browser tab and redirected, and that is not something i think Apple considers fair game.

I get the same thing on mine so you're not alone. Never tied it to FOFC but I guess this is where it's taking place. Likely an ad forcing a redirect.

And don't browse the web. Remember he got this by using the browser to come here.

Yeah, look, I'm not really an Apple apologist but iOS as a platform is far more secure than Android. What he has isn't a virus. I would have no problem recommending an iPhone over an Android phone to my parents or grandparents purely for easy of use and security concerns. All I'm saying here is that iOS is a more secure OS than Android.

Agreed, but that's different than saying "don't have to worry about". Anybody on the web needs to worry about security.
