WOW. I read the article last week that showed him as increasingly unhinged.

I spent like 3 hours trying to relicense McAFee on my dad's computer last week. Hopefully he killed whomever was responsible.

This is like some shit straight out of a comic book where the drug experimenting rich guy becomes a super villain when he tries his concoctions on himself. I hope they make a movie about this at some point.

And I almost missed unchecking that little box when updating Flash so the free McAfee trial wouldn't be installed just seconds ago. :)

He should've been arrested long ago for perpetrating one of the worst software ever devised onto the many personal computers - a virus disguised as an anti-virus software.

And I know people who still swear by it.

I wonder how good Belize is at catching murderers.
Also, I never knew anything about Ambergris Caye. It sounds pretty awesome though.

No doubt.
Part of the reason I finally went with a Mac was because my last laptop had paid "guaranteed protection" from McAfee and I got a bug, called their support, and they told me they could repair/remove it for $79 (I'm making the number up, but it was something in that neighborhood).
I wish I could come up with a business idea that allowed people to pay me up front for something and when my service fails, pay me again to repair it.

McAfee was originally pretty good. It went off the rails when it got bought out by CA or whoever.

Just getting more and more bizarre:Murder Suspect John McAfee: I'm Innocent | Threat Level | Wired.com (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/11/threatlevel_1112_mcafee/)
As Belizean police combed the property of expat antivirus pioneer John McAfee Sunday afternoon, McAfee was closer than they could have known. He’d seen them coming, and says he hid — burying himself in the sand with a cardboard box over his head so he could breathe. “It was extraordinarily uncomfortable,” he says, in an exclusive interview with Wired. “But they will kill me if they find me.”
McAfee is currently on the run from the police. “Under no circumstances am I going to willingly talk to the police in this country,” he told me this afternoon. “You can say I’m paranoid about it but they will kill me, there is no question. They’ve been trying to get me for months. They want to silence me. I am not well liked by the prime minister. I am just a thorn in everybody’s side.”
Nonetheless, McAfee insists he has no plans to leave the country. “I like it here,” he says. “It’s the nicest place on earth.”

Wikipedia also says that his wealth went from around $100M to $4M when the stock market crashed.

The wackiness continues -- now in blog form: Who is McAfee? | The official Blog of John McAfee. -[ www.whoismcafee.com ]- (http://www.whoismcafee.com)
It's starting to sound like a web-based promotion for a movie or something.

Good disguise, for real
After two days we returned to the house, in disguise, and I began my watch.
The first day I colored my full beard and my hair light grey- almost white. I darkened the skin of my face, neck and hands carefully with shoe polish and put on an LA Saints baseball cap with the brim facing backwards and tufts of the front of my hair sticking out unkempt through the band. I stuffed my cheeks with chewed bubble gum stuck to the outside of my upper and lower molars – making my face appear much fatter. I darkened and browned my front teeth. I stuffed a shaved down tampon deep into my right nostril and died the tip dark brown – giving my nose an awkward, lopsided, disgusting appearance. I put on a pair of ragged brown pants with holes patched and darned. I wore an old, ragged long sleeve shirt. I donned an old Guatemalan style sarape and toted a bag containing a variety of Guatemalan woven goods. I adjusted my posture so that I appeared a good six inches shorter than my actual height and slowly walked up and down the beach with a pronounced limp, pushing an old single speed bicycle and peddling my wares to tourists and reporters using a broken English with a heavy Spanish accent. On my second day, while peddling small wooden carvings, I nearly sold a dolphin carving to an Associated Press reporter standing at the edge of my dock. He was pulled away from my enticement by an urgent phone call.

Another odd chapter. From CNBC:
The House committee responsible for Obamacare oversight asked for expert guidance last week about the troubled launch of the federal Healthcare.gov site from John McAfee, the tech legend once suspected in the murder of his neighbor in Central America, CNBC has learned.
That Republican-controlled committee wanted the McAfee Associates founder to "guide our oversight and review of" the implementation of the federal marketplace selling Obamacare insurance, according to an email obtained by CNBC.com.
The committee suggested that McAfee might discuss the technologically botched rollout with members of Congress.

I guess I missed that update. I'd been thinking he was still hiding out in Belize or whatever for months. Weird.
