What is your favorite?

Mine without a doubt is PInot Noir!

Me too. Because they are so cheap over here, compared with similar quality Aussie reds.

See, I just don't think that there is a noticeable difference between similar quality wines no matter what the country of origin... It smacks of pretension IMO when the inevitable "I only drink French wine/champagne" person rears their heads at many of the corporate dinners I've attended.

Good wine is good wine, and these people are more interested in the prestige than the taste.

My dad and I's homemade wine is absolutely amazing....other than that I buy the Walmart 3$ Oakleaf brand...Yeah I'm 26 if that factors into it and quite frugal

That's the thing about wine I can't tell the difference between a 100 dollar ans a 3 dollar bottle, either my taste buds aren't refined or there just isn't a huge difference

Not a big fan of wine, I'll do tastings and stuff because its interesting but I don't actually enjoy the taste of any of them outside of dessert wines.

Australian Shiraz is usually my go-to, but I also like most Syrah's (which are very similar from what I've been told) and those Malbec's that tyketime mentioned are quite good as well.

As far as a favorite, I tend to enjoy whites just a bit more than reds overall. It would be close between a chardonnay a gewurtztraminer but if push came to shove I would choose the chard.

Hjalmer's Homemade Wine. I'm not much of a wine drinker but this stuff comes in old Snapple bottles and it gets you some fucked up.

I'm taking a recommendation and bringing a Gewurztraminer to Thanksgiving dinner this year. It's a semi-dry white with some sweetness and a touch of spice, I hear, that goes well with the usual turkey/cranberry/dressing/sweet potato smorgasbord. I'll let you know if it goes terribly or terribly well.

I actually just heard of 2 buck chuck yesterday. Of course I then headed to the internet to find out about all the rumors about it and then headed to TJs to buy a bunch. After all I have all that money that I didn't spend on twinkies.

Whites are tricky. OFten I find them sour and gross. I used to love Reisling but most I find now are indeed sour and gross.

I'm also a big Malbec fan. It really depends upon the bottle though - while I don't really enjoy Merlots all that much, there are a few labels that I love.

My top three:

1. Malbec
2. Pinot Noir
3. Zinfandel

I'd say sweet, but not super sweet. I think of it as a dessert wine, but it may not be classified as such. Maybe an after dinner wine.:) Would that be an apertif? Or is that just what you call a before a meal drink?

If I'm eating a steak, then a Malbec hands down.

Otherwise a Zinfandel or Syrah/petit Syrah. Fruity reds rule. The drier stuff may as well be white as far as I'm considered.

Looking for a good white... (not in a box)Recommendations are tricky for me because wine is like beer, pizza, and women -- everybody has their own unique tastes. That said, some reasonably priced whites in no particular order:
Chateau St. Michelle Harvest Select Riesling, Columbia Valley (the Indian Wells version is also good)
Monchoff Estate Riesling
St. Christopher Piesporter Goldtropfchen Auschlese
Machmer Gewurtztraminer Spatlese
Brassfield Estate Winery SerenityI didn't recommend any chardonnays as it seems that you prefer something less dry. I should add that anyone in Connecticut should check out Digrazia Vineyards. The Honey Blush is great, and the Yankee Frost is a superb dessert wine, very similar to an expensive ice wine. They can't ship to Illinois otherwise I would order a case of each.

Pinot Grigio might work. They used to be well on the fruity side of the whites. Nowadays I think there is a wider range, some of them quite dry, at least to my inexperienced palate.

I'll preface this by saying that for the most part I hate wine. I think it has more to do with the fact that my drinks have to be either piping hot (coffee, tea) or iced cold (pop, water, tea, beer) than it does with the taste of wine.

That being said (sorry Buddy), I am fond of Pinot Griigos. They are white, light, and dry.

As far as favorites go, I think it is a little tough to answer in a vacuum. I might have a different answer while sitting out on the deck on the afternoon when it is 100 degrees than I would when ordering something at a high end steak house.

I'm definitely less adventurous with my white wines than I am with reds. I would probably say Cabernet Sauvignon if I had to pick just one, but there are not nearly as many "value" picks here compared to Pinot Noir, Malbec, Shiraz/Syrah, Tempranillo, Cab Franc, etc. I also have found that I like a lot of the blends where it is something like 80% CS, 10% CF, 10% Merlot.

So the Gewurz was indeed sweet -- not Moscato sweet, but on a par with a sweet Riesling. However, there was a spicier undertone to the Gewurz than you would get with a Riesling.

Of the wines I had over the past couple days to go with Thanksgiving weekend grazing, I think the Cab Sauv wins, despite not being too much of a red wine person. I do like crisp (though not ultra-dry) whites best, generally speaking, but there are some good, full reds that are pretty versatile, too.

ised to not be a red person until i found some good ones...and some good ones that I remember LOL

I used to forget which wines i like the next day . :)

Cab is okay but I always love Pinot Noir. (NOT Grigio)
And I'm really not that into whites anymore really.

We were in a Kendall Jackson tasting room just a few days ago, and the Syrahs... if they weren't so expensive I would have had a case shipped here. Memorable stuff.

I used to be a Merlot fan, but I'm developing a partiality to the Syrahs. I also have a weakness for the Cab Franc Ice Wines in the Niagara region.
