View Full Version : Your all-time team for your favorite team

Young Drachma

So a Blue Jays blogger listed his all-time Jays team.

It made me think about my own. The game here is simple, one favorite team and your favorite players at position from said team. Obviously for football, you don't have to list everyone. (OMGZ FAVORITE LONG SNAPPER)

But it might be fun(ish).

This thread is really about your favorites, so feel emboldened to leave off the "best evar" simply because he was, if he wasn't one of your favorites.

All-Time Steelers:

QB - Ben Roethlisberger. Starting out with the most controversial choice, I'd rather have Big Ben over Terry Bradshaw simply because I think Ben has done more with less than Terry. Still, this is easily arguable.
RB - Franco Harris. Franco vs. Jerome Bettis is very, very close. The Immaculate Reception gets Franco the nod.
FB - Rocky Bleier
WR - John Stallworth
WR - Hines Ward
No Lynn Swann? Nope, I'd rather have those two guys.
TE - Heath Miller
OT - Larry Brown
OG - Dermontti Dawson - Yeah, he played Center the majority of his career, but he started at OG in his 1st season and I'll use him there.
C - Mike Webster
OG - Alan Fanica
OT - Tunch Ilkin

(13 players on defense due to the 4-3 and 3-4 decades)

DT - Joe Greene - The Best Ever and the cornerstone of the franchise
DT - Ernie Stautner - By a hair over Casey Hampton
DE - LC Greenwood
DE - Aaron Smith - Perhaps the most underrated player in the last decade
OLB - Jack Ham
OLB - James Harrison - Another close battle. Could have gone with Joey Porter, Greg Lloyd or even Kevin Greene, but I think Harrison at his peak was more complete than any of them.
ILB - Jack Lambert
ILB - Andy Russell - By just a hair over James Farrior
CB - Rod Woodson - The most complete CB in the history of the NFL
CB - Mel Blount
S - Troy Polamalu
S - Donnie Shell - I hate leaving Carnell Lake off this list, but...

Going off of favorites since I really started watching and following football when I was about 12 or so. Some positions like TE and LB is really tough to do given who the Vikings have had since then and it says a lot about the QBs the Vikings have had when the choice is a guy who started 23 games for them.

Very good list. I have a few quibbles:

I'd take Steve Sewell as the second RB
Rick Upchurch as a PR/WR
Dennis Smith would go over Jon Lynch
Louis Wright would go over Braxton and I'd throw Braxton in as the nickle back
Tom Rouen would be my punter
Lastly, I like Wolfe, but I don't think he deserves a spot yet. I might go three/four and add Randy Gradishar in as a second ILB

Oh, one more thing, serious apologies to Tombstone Jackson. by most accounts, the best player this organization ever had before #7 came to town. I just never saw him, so I can't comment on him as a favorite. Ditto for Floyd Little.

Tough to leave off QB's like Ty Detmer, Marc Wilson, Steve Sarkisian and Gifford Neilson, but BYU has an equally deep tradition at TE with Clay Brown, Ituli Mili, Trevor Molini and Chad Lewis not making the cut.

Yeah I think Andy Dalton is going to go down as the best QB ever to play in Cinci, although I think Greg Cook would have been. Daltons development thus far has been outstanding, outpacing Palmer's early years easily. He has also done it with quite a bit less talent around him on offense.

I expected to see more obscure people on this thread. Most posts read like an all time list rather than an all time fav's.

Oddly my all time favorite "team" was the Chargers (with Fouts, Jefferson, Joiner, Winslow, Muncie, Kelcher, Big Hand Johnson). But, that was just those specific teams and I don't follow the Chargers with any kind of loyalty. So, I am guessing that isn't the type of "favorite team" we're looking for here.

My favorite team through the years would be between Detroit Tigers and the Michigan Wolverines basketball teams.

G Gerry McNamara
G Lawrence Moten (guard/foward)
F Carmelo Anthony
F John Wallace
C Otis Hill

Bench:
C Etan thomas
F Hakim Warrick
G Mike Hopkins

Boeheim never plays more than 8, so that is enough. :)

I'd have to find a spot on my favorite Syracuse team (since 1996) for Allen Griffin.

Smith didn't suck as much as people think, he was just better suited for the Niners. His numbers with the Bengals were nearly identical to those he puts up now, but he gets more notice with a winning team in a big market.

As for Dalton, I do think he is going to go down as the best QB in Bengals history. He's putting up numbers rarely seen in 1st and 2nd year QB's, even with about half the offensive weaponry Palmer, Esiason and Anderson had to work with, and without any training camp his first season. All he has done is improve nearly every week, to the point where he is now less of a game manager and more of a leader and field general. It won't be long before he will be talked about as a top 10 QB, barring injury. Probably has top 5 potential with his intelligence, decision making, quick release, anticipation and mobility. I can tell he wants to be great, just like I can tell A.J. and Geno do. Those 3 are irreplaceable.

I also considered Rouen, but every time I hear his name, I think "Here's Tom to Rouen our chances of winning." Not fair, I suppose, but then, I love the idea of a punter (Sauerbrun) who could kick the ball 70 yards kicking in Denver.

It was tough to leave both Dennis Smith and Brian Dawkins off the list, but I only allowed myself 2 safeties.

And yes, it's early, but I'm a fan of nicknames that fit well, and for the Bearcat who plays with more heart than talent, "Hungry like a" Wolfe just became an instant favorite of mine. I find myself singing the song about 5 times every game, and for a DT to get sung about 5 times a game is a pretty impressive feat.

Glavine was kind of like the "northerner" among a bunch of good ole boys so to speak. he didn't fit in perhaps with the mindset of some of the others on the team at the time, and wasn't necessarily as personable to the fans. I just always liked watching him pitch. I really enjoyed the days of Maddux + Glavine pitching wise for whatever reason.

Royals

(good list)

I think I could fill a most hated list for the Royals pretty quickly too.

I think I'm up for that challenge. I limited myself to 2000 and beyond. Why go back more than that if, unfortunately, you don't have to. The hardest part, of course, was SS. I cheated and put Betancourt at 2B. And Berroa got to DH.

Lineup
C Benito Santiago - How much did you get paid to go off steroids and play like 40 games in 2004? Could have also included "Juan Gonzalez" with this same exact description.
1B Ken Harvey - Ah, the tarp, the hit in the back play- so much "fun" and calling him a 1B is a misnomer.
2B Yuniesky Betancourt - TWICE! TWICE!!! Tho, "Batter Nine You Sucky" will never be topped as an anagram.
SS Neifi Perez - The trade that really symbolized how broken the franchise was in the early 2000s.
3B Desi Relaford - He played 7 positions for the Royals and none of them well. And he couldn't hit. They just kept putting him out there!
RF Jeff Francouer - So much to not like: hates being benched despite not being able to hit, can't hit, etc. And Moore signed him to a stupid extension!
CF Michael Tucker - Asshat.
LF Jose Guillen - See "Michael Tucker" and then add a dose of crazy.
DH Mike Jacobs - Traded a decent reliever (more on that in a moment) for him and he blocked cheaper, better in house options.

Bench
UT Chuck Knoblauch - Way too old and too crappy by the time he signed and just cashing a check.
UT Willie Bloomquist - One of a raft of players who have "GRIT", which I believe is a contraction for " 'GReat' white player who cannot hIT".
1B Ross Gload - Like Willie, full of 'grit' and blocked Shealy in 2007 and Ka'aihue (sortof) in 2008.
IF Angel Berroa - ROY who got lazy and crappy quickly (or maybe was never very good).
OF Dee Brown - Weren't you supposed to be good?!?
OF Mark Quinn - Wanted to like him. Remember being at the game where he walked for the first time in like 250 PAs.

Rotation
SP Luke Hochevar - He was the first pick in the MLB draft. Really!
SP Kyle Davies - I believe Hiram has the worst ERA for a pitcher with over 100 career starts. The Royals started his 5.59 144 times!
SP Chris George - How "magical" was 2003? He was 9-6 with a 7.11 ERA!
SP Runelvys Hernandez - Ah, Fat Elvis. I actually thought you were good once.
SP Mark Redman - Honestly, this is unfair to him. But he was All Star Mark Redman in a year where he had a 5.71 ERA. He's just a stand-in to symbolize all of the futile attempts to sign cheap, crappy starting pitching at rock bottom prices and the surprise everyone had when they did, in fact, suck.

Bullpen
RP Ricky Botallico - So many blown saves in so little time.
RP Ambiorix Burgos - Attempted murder, assault, and his other assorted rap sheet get him on this list.
RP Kyle Farnsworth - Opening Day 2009: we all knew exactly what was going to happen.
RP Juan Carlos Oviedo - We knew you as a 2 year younger Leo Nunez who was traded to KC for Santiago and away for Jacobs.
RP Horacio Ramirez - He wasn't bad in his first go 'round, but, in a recurring Moore theme, he was resigned for way too much money and eventually DFAd.

Wow. A whole 25 man roster. Oof. And that took less than an hour to do. More oof.

Give me Rose instead of Harper. Maybe not enough basketballs, but tons of defense, 3 closers on the floor, and 3 ball handlers that can beat their man almost at will? Yes please. I may have to make this squad for the Bulls when I start up my NBA2K13 association. :)

For the bench, I'd go with Quentin Dailey, Orlando Woolridge, Horace Grant, Reggie Theus, Craig Hodges, and John Paxson. Hard to leave off Gilmore, Greenwood, Armstrong, Kerr, and others, but those are the players I enjoyed watching play for various reasons.

I think Rose could survive on the floor with Jordan. Maybe if Wade or James would've signed a couple of seasons ago, we could see what Rose could do with another elite offensive player on the floor to gauge.

Not terribly close. Beuerlein's three years lined up perfectly with my coming of age, football-wise, and I still think he was the more heroic QB, though on a mediocre team. Jake had too many highs and lows for my liking, and I chalk up more of the team's success with him to Stephen Davis's big year and the incredible D-line we had (fun while it lasted).

As for He Hate Me, consider him my special teamer. I just forgot about him because neither the name "Rod Smart" nor his stats jumped out at me from the Pro Football Reference pages.

To that end:

ALL-TIME BLUE JAYS TEAM

ROTATION
1. Roy Halladay
2. Juan Guzman
3. Roger Clemens
4. Pat Hentgen
5. Jimmy Key

Sentimental Pick: Jack Morris (Only two years. But the reason I became a Blue Jays fan.)

SETUP MAN: Duane Ward
CLOSER: Tom Henke

FIRST BASE: JOHN OLERUD
SECOND BASE: ROBBY ALOMAR
THIRD BASE: KELLY GRUBER
SHORTSTOP: TONY FERNANDEZ
CATCHER: Pat Borders
LEFT FIELD: JOE CARTER
CENTER FIELD: DEVON WHITE
RIGHT FIELD: JOSE BAUTISTA
DESIGNATED HITTER: CARLOS DELGADO

Pretty good list - it's amazing how many of the spots are filled by players from the two World Series teams, especially when you consider that the team has been around for 35 years.

The only changes I'd make are to insert Dave Stieb in for Hentgen (I always loved watching Guzman pitch) and George Bell in at LF, with Carter moving over to RF in place of Bautista.

You could also make arguments for including Molitor in at DH but not at the expense of Olerud or Delgado, who played for many more years with the team.

Why didn't you like Fiedler. All he ever did was win in Miami!!

Fiedler is a terrific example of the flaw in evaluating a QB based on wins and losses. Those Dolphins teams were loaded on defense and had terrific running games. According to Football Outsiders, he finished 20th, 8th, 19th, 20th, and 40th in his 5 Miami seasons. Also, he was probably one of the worst QB's in postseason history (1 TD, 8 INT in three playoff games with Miami). It always angered and frustrated me that Wannstedt was so fond of him.

Awesome idea! If I did that for the Jags, it'd be like 15 million WRs though. RJ Soward, Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, Jerry Porter, Jermaine Lewis, etc. It's been roto-receiver with every Kevin Johnson or Troy Edwards being brought on down for a year to play for our team and see what they have.

EDIT: I haven't felt this good about Jags guys with Shorts and Blackmon than I have since Mike Sims-Walker broke out..

I expected to see more obscure people on this thread. Most posts read like an all time list rather than an all time fav's.

If that's the case, then you have to add Joe Zelenka as the long snapper for years and years. He was one of the most popular players on the team during his tenure. People loved him. I'd not be shocked if he doens;t pull a Boselli or Jeff Lageman and join the community with media or coaching with the Jags in a few years.

Pretty close to what I have. I think I would probably put Leiter instead of Sid. John Franco was probably the right answer for Mets closer in terms of longevity, but he just drove me nuts. I never saw him play but I think I'd go with Tug McGraw over him for what he meant to the franchise.

As far as the lineup goes, I think you have it right, but I just want to give a passing mention to 3 personal favorites of mine.

Pssh. Wasn't a question about Jerome vs Reggie, or Reggie vs anyone else. That's all positional depth. Crud, I totally forget about Leiter (which is strange since he's from my hometown). Yeah, I agree, Leiter over Sid.

Ah, John Olerud! I can't believe he only played 3 seasons for the Mets. He was unlucky that sabermetrics didn't take off until after he was in New York (well for the Mets). Would have been MUCH more appreciated. And Delgado DID have some good seasons before he got injured all the time.

Bullpen: Dan Quisenberry, Steve Farr, Jeff Montgomery, Joakim Soria, Tom Gordon

Wish I could find a spot for Jermaine Dye, but Tartabull gets the nod here. Surprisingly, Tartabull is the Royals all-time leader in slugging percentage. More surprising -- Raul Ibanez is second.

I think I'm up for that challenge. I limited myself to 2000 and beyond. Why go back more than that if, unfortunately, you don't have to. The hardest part, of course, was SS. I cheated and put Betancourt at 2B. And Berroa got to DH.
Wow. Impressive job. What a waste of humanity we've paraded through this town. Shortstop was indeed an incredible challenge, and you even had to leave Tony Pena Jr. off.

Pitcher was pretty difficult too. You could have easily added Jeremy Affeldt, Dan Reichert and Kyle Snyder and Jason Grimsley. Grimsley had the trifecta of sucking, being outspoken during the collective bargaining process and getting nailed for PEDs.

SP Chris George - How "magical" was 2003? He was 9-6 with a 7.11 ERA!

How "magical" was 2003? Darrell May went 10-8 with a 3.77 ERA. Rest of his Royals career? 13-29, 5.50.

How bad was Albie Lopez in 2003? During the Royals dazzling start, Lopez pitched 15 games in relief, managing to somehow go 4-2, while posting a 12.71 ERA. In case you think it was bad luck, his WHIP was 2.559 and he gave up 7 home runs in 22 innings.

sterlingice
11-29-2012, 03:12 PM
I always had a soft spot for Affeldt from when we used to wait outside after games to get autographs. If you're out there, you can see patterns develop where there were what we called "sacrificial lambs" who were thrown out to the autograph crowd so another 5 or so guys could drive away. John Buck was really good. DDJ, Sweeney, and Randa all signed a decent amount. But Affelt, he was /always/ there- more than anyone I ever saw. My friend had his "lucky" hat that was signed by Affeldt but he wore it off from wearing it too much. He just had Jeremy sign it again some other night like a year later because he was always there and would took and seemed like a decent guy. He just had that damn blister problem.

I strongly considered Grimsley for two of the three reasons listed: honestly, I can't remember how he pitched. But I remember him being a total dick about collective bargaining as the player rep and then the steroids. He's gotta be the biggest omission.

I just realized if I would have picked Dick LeBeau over Lem Barney I would have had a secondary full of Dicks!

I only picked Dorney over Lomas Brown because Creekmur played the same position as Brown & I don't know how he would have been on the right side. I could have made Creekmur a RT and the line would have been even better, but the best OL the team may have ever had gets to play his own position.

And yes, I did select 3 MLB's. Name a Lion's OLB that should bump one of these guys off the field.
