One of my (currently) two jobs is at the YMCA, where I am a wellness and sports instructor. One of my roles is to create new events to get people into the gym, and into the community.

Naturally, I have decided on a sports & happy hour night.

The object is simple: Come in, play, then go somewhere and enjoy life. I believe it will be big with...well, everyone. Mystic is a small town, but we cover several small towns. It's something that's fun and anyone can join.

I have the basic sports covered...dodgeball, volleyball, etc. What I need are more obscure sport ideas. I want to run with any idea I can, and see what sticks.

What I ask is simple: If you have an idea I should investigate, please respond. I'm open to anything, and appreciate any suggestions I receive.

Thanks for reading.

Team Handball was always one of my favorites in middle/high school.

I believe it was called Wallyball, basically volleyball played on a racquetball court. The wall is in play and, if I remember right, 4 players to a team. It was absolutely a great time.

Another one that we had a lot of fun with was indoor whiffleball in a gymnasium. Works pretty well.

indoor Tennis Polo was a huge hit when I introduced it in a few places...only the keepers have racquets.

Full disclosure, I created it.

You have to throw Kickball into the mix,(if you haven't already) goes very good with happy hour and with walls in play indoors can be a lot of fun.

Team Handball was always one of my favorites in middle/high school.

We dont play Team handball but a version of it. We call it speedball. Use a nerf soccer ball sized ball. I use a gator skin volleyball.
Game starts with a jump ball and after every score.
There are 2 ways to move the ball. If the ball is in your hands you can pass it. Anytime the ball is on the floor you play it like soccer.
If the ball is kicked into the air you can catch it.
You can use your feet or the wall to pop the ball in the air to your hands.
You cannot touch the ball with your hands if it last touched the floor (i.e. a bouncing ball). That is a handball.
If the ball is in your hands you can only pivot. You cannot run with the ball. if you do that is traveling. I give a couple steps when receiving a pass.
We use the mats on the ends of the gym as the goals.
2 ways to score. You can throw it at the mat, but only from outside the 3 point line. If you are inside, play continues. Or you can kick it in from anywhere.
Goalie can only play the ball with their hands inside goalie box. If they go outside the goalie box, they have to play the ball as a regular player.
You can only hold the ball in your hands for 3 seconds.
Defense has to stay an arms length away from the player with the ball in their hands. Otherwise they can guard closely. If it is in soccer mode, defense like soccer.
If ball in hands you can drop it and play it like soccer.
Anytime a violation occurs, the ball goes to the other team and play continues right away.
I usually dont wait for participants to get tot he jump ball circle after a goal. I tell them it is sppedball and you need to hurry.

This is a great game.

Another option is Pickleball. This is a racquet sport and tons of fun. If you have ever played pickelball, you love it.

Wiffleball... When I used to go to the Boys and Girls Club as a kid I loved playing wiffleball in the gym. We used the larger "softball sized" wiffleballs (taped up if needed) Along with the larger bats (the wide ones not the narrow ones, taped up as well). Homeruns were only a certain height off floor on the back wall and you can catch off walls as well. Heck we played that when I was in my 20s, still would be playing it now if my best friend hadn't moved again.

1. Rollerball - you can reuse old football shoulder pads and just put spikes on them.

2. Bloodbowl - you can reuse old football shoulder pads and just put spikes on them.

3. Fight Club - I've said too much already.

Dola,

Inspired by DanGarion's sig, TASER-tag! Like regular tag but you have to tase (sp?) the guy. Then, everyone gets a break while the guy who is "it' recovers his senses.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys. I've got a long list that's getting longer.

I also have to research pickleball. I've had a couple of suggestions for this, between here and Facebook. Gotta look that up.

Floor hockey? not obscure, but should definitely be in there.
