View Full Version : Defensive Coverage Question?

I have a dilemma. I am trying to pass defense a team that has the flanker and tight end with the tight end that has a route running of 83 and flanker with a route running of 82. The rest of the offense with route running is as followed.
FB-87
RB-60
SE-62.
Both games that I have played this season against this team, I have lost.
In game 1, the flanker was targeted 11 times with 8 catches for 81 yards,
the TE and RB both targeted 4 times.
In game 2, the TE was targeted 10 times with 8 catches for 117 yards, with the Flanker and RB both targeted 4 times each.
Also, I should mention that the TE was First Team All-Pro for two consecutive years.
If I play Weak Side Man and Strong Side Zone, I am under the assumption that the Strong Side LB has underneath coverage on the flanker with the Strong side CB covering the flanker deep with the Strong Safety covering the tight end in single coverage.
That might stop the flanker, but leaves the tight end in single man coverage with the SS.
What I would like to do is double cover both the flanker and tight end but I don't seem like that is possible.
If it was, I again would assume that that the Strong side LB and Strong side CB would cover the Flanker and maybe the free safety would cover underneath on the TE with the Strong Safety covering deep.
This would probably leave me open with passes to the RB deep with linebacker coverage with Weak LB as well as passes over the middle to FB with MLB coverage but both backs have good route running abilities.
With all the receivers having good route running, I believe that blitzing should be used sparingly.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who respond.

Well, doubling by RR should definitely get the Flanker doubled, because non-WR positions' RR abilities are not, AFAIK, taken at face value. A TE "83" is not considered the same as a WR "83" by the game in this matter, so it's very unlikely you will double a TE by design. Not sure I've seen it happen.

Remember that doubling occurs ONLY in pass normal or pass aggressive.

In Weak-side Man, the TE should be on the side of the field with zone coverage (strong-side being the TE side, by my understanding -- but I don't know if the game exactly works this way). In Weak-side man, the weakside corner will play Man, and every other pass defender plays zone.

Can't double more than one guy by design.

I'd take a look at the flanker's overall importance to the offense and his targets on the year compared to the other guys. If he's killing it and is their feature target, double him.

If they have a lot of viable options, I think you have to take into account the QB's Read Defense ability as well as if there are certain situations you want to double and certain situations you don't. (For example, sometimes I'll double a stud low-BPR receiver except in 100% pass D situations, where I expect the offense to throw long. That's if they have some other serious BPR threats.)

I'd be interested to read responses to this, and other very particular coverage questions, because it's a fun puzzle to tease out. It sounds like what you should do here is run a lot of weak-side man to get the TE in zone coverage, and then double the flanker. That depends on personnel of course. But I'm interested in the implications of doubling on passes to the non-WR receivers. Presumably if you're doubling the FL you're making it easier to pass to the TE, particularly for a high read defense QB. I would be tempted to run no double teams in this case.

I think the TE can be doubled but only in 2/3 TE sets, I have seen TE's doubled in those situations.
Depending on the offense play you may double the flanker or the TE.
I have a TE with 100 RR in a league and he does get doubled, but I am running a fair amount of 2 TE sets since my QB knows them all.
