"Beasts of the Southern Wild" director beating out several other big names for that last spot is pretty surprising.

Yeah, I was surprised at how much love Silver Linings Playbook got, too. Not from having seen it (I haven't yet, heard it's good), but just from what I have heard, it strikes me as a solid film that deserves to get some attention from awards, but not necessarily to this level.

I'm not a big fan of history pieces or period pieces, but i have to say Lincoln is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.I have to think that it will sweep up a bunch of awards.

It'd be a pretty big upset. I feel like they'll go with something more conventional and big budget.
I do think it'll take Best Original Screenplay handily though.

As always, I look right away for the snubs. This year was a pretty good year for movies. The director category is the biggest surprise for me. No affleck, tarrentino, anderson? Movie wise there is one that surprises me as being absent and one that disappoints me. I am surprised that Cloud Atlas didn't get anything. It was hyped to all hell. It definitely didn't live up to the hype, got a split reaction, and had some controversy, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I at least expected something for makeup or score. I'm disappointed but not shocked to not see Moonriseb Kingdom. One of my favorite movies of the year.

Didn't see it there for Best Original Screenplay, but surprised it got snubbed for Costumes. It deserved it over Snow White and The Huntsman.

That kind of stuff always seems pretty cool to me. I always search the Grammy list to see how many nominees I have some connection (however slight) to and always feel good for them no matter how low regard I may hold for the Grammys.
I think I sort of look at awards kind of like TV/radio ratings -- we know they're wrong but at the same time they are what they are too.

Same here, I thought he was awful. Foxx wasn't much better, I thought Waltz was by far the best actor in the movie. Overall, I didnt like Django much at all, I give it a 6/10. Definitely didn't deserve any awards, other than supporting for Waltz.

You know, I didn't think I really had an issue with Jackson in this one, but then I got to thinking. On the road to Candie's mansion, at which starts the third act of the movie, I told myself, "Damn, this might be one of the most awesome movies I have ever seen."
Cut to next scene, they arrive at Candie's mansion and Jackson makes his first appearance. The third act was much less awesome than the first two acts.
I would be silly to ignore that Jackson was a significant factor in Django going from awesome to suck.

I think correlation doesn't necessarily lead to causation. I thought Samuel L. Jackson was fantastic - esp in changing from how he was in front of the whites as compared to behind closed doors. I think his role was fantastic. But I do think that the massive change in tone of the movie (you know where) made the ending a far different sort of movie.

This Best Picture list is interesting. Usually I've have seen 3 or 4 of the movies, but I find myself as having seen 6 of the 9 (haven't seen Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, or Amour). SLP really surprised me, FWIW. I guess I have to see it, though I really hadn't seen much press on it prior to.
In my opinion, Life of Pi was the best movie I've seen all year. Though Lincoln is likely the most "Best Picture" type of those I saw.

I watched Silver Linings Playbook tonight, and I thought it was fantastic. All the nominations it got were deserved.
I was really impressed with Jennifer Lawrence, she was great.
So at this point, I've seen-
SLP- my choice for best picture. Career performance from Bradley Cooper. It's funny, it's sad, it's heartbreaking, it's inspiring!
Django- Thought Walz played the same guy he played in Basterds. Felt the Jamie Foxx role could have been played by most decent actors and it would have been the same movie. I enjoyed it, I don't think it has a chance though. I'm a Leo fan boy, but I thought he should have been nominated.
Zero Dark Thirty- Wasn't expecting to like it, and loved it. It's long, but i didn't feel like it was. Chastain was perfect. Had me on the edge of my seat.
Still planning on seeing Argo, Lincoln, and Life of Pi. The other 3, meh, probably not.

I'll make my predictions, having seen very few of these films.
Best picture
•"Zero Dark Thirty"
-I'll probably see it soon, but from what I've heard it is amazing.
Actor
•Daniel Day-Lewis, "Lincoln"
-Can't see how he wouldn't win this
Actress
•Jessica Chastain, "Zero Dark Thirty"
-carries the movie from what I've read, much like in the type of role never written for a woman.
Supporting actor
•Christoph Waltz, "Django Unchained"
-Heard he was great
Supporting actress
•Anne Hathaway, "Les Misérables"
-Helen Hunt getting naked might win, but Anne cut her hair.
Director
•Ang Lee, "Life of Pi"
-From what I understand about the book, this movie takes something that could have been disasterous to film and instead crafts a well carried out story with seemless integration of the digital effects and this movie was extremely well reviewed.
Adapted screenplay
•"Life of Pi," David Magee
Original screenplay
•"Django Unchained," Quentin Tarantino

Ok, so saw Silver Linings Playbook. Jennifer Lawrence was amazing. Bradley Cooper mostly annoyed me, though I can see why he was nominated. De Niro wakes up on point, so no big shock he killed it. Now that I've seen it, I feel that way about Cooper. There wasn't much subtlety about that performance from her, but his performance felt very dead fish to me. A lot of it was how the character was written, but I felt he was just an awkward mess and that he didn't really show as much as being bandied about unless everyone acting around him was the performance and that we're crediting him for good everyone else was, as he was the head coach of the movie.

Chastain was really great and deserved a nomination.
Lawrence was better then great and deserved the Oscar.

Terrific. I'll have to remember this when I get around to seeing SLP (unfortunately, probably won't see it in the theater here before it disappears...).

What did the Onion do last night that was so bad?
They tweeted: "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhane Wallis is kind of a cunt, right?"

My opinion on the matter: It's the Onion... c'mon people!

To me the biggest difference was that Chastain carried her film from start to finish. I thought shed win but have no problem with Lawrence even though I don't think SLP was that good, just well acted.

"Not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting."
?
and ehh, I suppose they answer it in their next sentence. But I don't see the tweet as inconsistent with that idea... it's just a terrible execution of it.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. The tweet was within the spirit of what the Onion does, but it went well over the line of where it was edgy humor. Usually the Onion dances that line pretty good.

Damn Twitter... writing "bitch" just put it over 140 characters ;).

I had that thought, and counted just to make sure... it's only 90.
I find it hard to argue that the tweet crossed the line when it comes to satire considering that, "it would have been fine had they just called the nine-year-old girl a bitch instead of a cunt" seems to be a fairly common response to this little controversy.

I think a big problem with that tweet is the the format itself. Having a story on the Onion where some ridiculous character writes an editorial calling her that wouldn't have been as bad, it would have had context, and context can make it satire. But just a random tweet doesn't hit that mark.
As an aside, Quvenzhane did get some good news this week, shes going to play Annie on screen. I think her energy and demeanor are perfect for that.

So it seemed Seth McFarland did his job:
Oscars 2013 TV Ratings -- Up 19% Over 2012 (http://www.deadline.com/2013/02/oscars-2013-tv-ratings-up-from-2012-abc-seth-macfarlane/)
The 85th Oscars had 40.3 million viewers last night in Live+Same Day ratings. Sunday’s Seth MacFarlane-hosted ceremony on ABC slipped ahead of the 39.3 million that watched last year’s telecast, when Billy Crystal returned to headline the show that saw the Hollywood-based mainly silent film The Artist win Best Picture. Not only did this year’s Oscarcast see its viewership go up by 3% compared with 2012, but it rose 11% in the adults 18-49 demo with a 13.0 rating — the 2012 show got a 11.7 rating.

Really not surprising to see those numbers though. Billy Crystal I can't recall doing much of anything in years. Seth, despite my somewhat dislike of the guy, is going to bring in younger viewers.

Watched Silver Lining Playbook. Bearing in mind I haven't watched the other actresses, I'm honestly surprised J-Law won the best actress award. Not that it was bad but I didn't think it was spectacular. Helluva hot though.
