Are the Broncos going to learn that Peyton Manning is not necessarily a cold-weather QB? Gumbel and Dierdorf making a big deal of Manning wear gloves on both hands and Flacco no gloves, then Flacco throws a bomb and Manning the pick-6.
That throw by Flacco was one of the best Madden-esque TD passes I've ever seen in real life. Tory Smith had to hit the right trigger to get that ball and catches it in stride at full speed. Beautiful.

Bailey either needs to be bumping Smith or playing off the ball because Smith is running by him.

What a catch by Smith
Aided by a nifty little push off.
That said they've been letting light contact go on both sides of the ball for both teams. It is almost like they have orders to swallow the whistle and take away the regular season strategy of throwing it up looking for the forty yard PI call.

Another kick return by Holliday ... holy cow.
Flacco is making big plays. I heard a Baltimore reporter covering the team on KC radio this week. He said this game and the rest of the post season was going to go a long way toward the Ravens determining whether to resign Flacco long term or franchise him and give him one more year to prove himself. He's made me a believer. He's not going to be Brady, Manning or Rodgers, but he can be on that next tier.

I just wonder in general if Peyton having so much leeway with audibles and stuff over the years hasn't lead to him tending to over-think things come playoff time. I just feel like with the increased pressure he never seems to be at 100% in the playoffs.

Flacco outplaying Manning easily rght now
I really don't think that is true. I'd look at first downs and total plays and say I think Manning is playing the better game(And Flacco should actually have a huge advantage in both of these with Denver losing two positions to special teams TDs.)
Flacco also benefitted greatly from Smith making Bailey look silly for an entire half and that actually accounts for over half of his total yards. Flacco STILL hasn't hit 200 yards at this point. And how many times did Flacco miss Smith while he was open?
I really don't get all the negative crap Manning gets.

I really don't get Joe Flacco - the disparity between his good/bad performances is just enormous, and if he is capable of those kind of "good" performances then you would have expected to see growth towards softening the bad and more frequently approaching the good over the past couple of years.
You look at what he's done in this game, in the AFC title game last year (both on road), and it is hard to fathom that this guy is such a total boob 6-8 times a year during the regular season.

Exactly what I was going to say after the game was over. John Fox needs to be reminded that his QB is Peyton Manning not Jake Delhomme. How can you not let him try a pass on 3rd and 7 when a first down gives you the win? Instead you hand it off to a backup RB and let him run up the middle? Then let the clock run out to send the game to OT instead of letting Manning try to win the game? Vintage John Fox.

They gave up 161 yards in touchdown passes. Peyton had an interception ran back for a touchdown that hit his receiver in the hands. He picked up nine more first downs with two less possessions. He was more efficient on third down.
He made a couple of legit mistakes, but clearly this can only mean one thing.

I watched the whole game. I watched him toss three TD passes. I watched Flacco be the better QB on teh day, and that's sad for your "elite-status" when that happens. So, Eli beat one of the best playoff QBs of our era but when Peyton won it was because of the defense? Peyton Manning, of all those years with the Colts D, is not allowed to put it on the defense for why he only has one ring but when they win. ..

Eli cameup big and kinda was exposed too. Peyton;s numbers were just as bad in the SB run as normal, but the defense really came alive and stopped people to allow the win - Where has Manning been when his defenses can;t do that? When the game needs to be won on the shoulder of the "consensus best QB of the era" where is he in the playoffs and Super Bowl time? Sure, the occasional win early in the playoffs, but invariably he sucks it up.
Is it also Peyton's fault Denver gave up that prayer from Flacco for a TD in the 4th?

Basically, i ask, what does it mean when the "consensus best quarterbacks" in the top two or three of this era can;t get more than one SB win. Is is because his team isn;t that loaded with atlent, a la Marino? It could be, but players like Dwight Freeney, Marvin Harrison, Ed James, Bob Sanders, and Reggie Wayne might make an argument that the Colts had the talent to make the SB every year. Is it bad coaching? Is is just bad luck?
Now he had the chance to go deep with the #1 spot with a very good Denver team, and he just Peytoned the ball three times to the defense and lost. Again.
So, i think we need to redefine Manning;s status. Best QB oif this era is Brady, let's just stop any argument that P. Manning iis in the question. Quarterbacks like Brees who have just as many regular season accolades as Manning and one ring as well move up, and a QB like E Manning move sup, because he's won two rings. Barring some miracle SB run inthe next year or two, in my opinion, P Manning has been dropped from the argument of the #1 or #2 spot to the #4 or 5 spot onf the las tdecade. All of the attack against him for having bad playoffs is coming back and getting more and more steam.

I dont think the NFL sample size is large enough to judge NFL QBs and to put much sooooooo much weight on SB wins. Yes, Eli pulls some magic in the 4th quarter and playoffs often but what the hell is doing in the first half of some games and why are they fighting to even make the playoffs most years?
Peyton just happens to have some of his worst games in the playoffs. Is there a large enough sample size to say he chokes or could it be that he just picks really bad times to have his "off games?"
I think if you switched Brady and PManning around PManning would like have more super bowl wins than Brady.

No, but the blame is always put on the QB if they lose. And these games always come down to a play here or there that it's not really fair. Is Eli a better QB than Brady because Eli beat Brady in two Superbowls? I don't think anybody would argue that. If Kaepernick beats Rodgers will people argue that Kaepernick is the better QB? It's the team that wins or loses so all this talk about Eli over Peyton is nonsense.

Colin is the great what if of Jags. If we ha not moved up to draft Gabbert, and the trade agreement came in laste, then we were taking Colin in the 2nd if still on teh board as the next best QB onthe board there.
To be fair, the greatest what if is what if the Ravens and Vikings had not screwed up the trade to move above the Jags to take LEftwich. The best player left on the Jags board was Terrell Suggs, and then they would have taken their best QB on their board, Ben R next year in the top ten, and would have had Ben Roeth and Suggs instead of Leftwich and that bad 9th overall pick WR we took - williams.

My final point. Knowing the career they would have going in, would you take Eli or Peyton in the top overall pick if they were in the same draft? Eli had two Super Bowls and may have more. Peyton had one, a bunch of MVP awards, and likely won;t have anymore Bowls. They have the exact same stats, game losses, career and so forth. Who do you take? Now, i take Eli. Having MVP trophies is sexy but you aren;t playing for that ultimately.

This is bringing up memories of John Fox losing games with his far too conservative play calling in Carolina. I had worked hard to repress those.
To be fair the Ravens were nearly as bad - they must have run up the middle on 90% of first downs and they left their kicker with a real tough kick at the end y not trying to move the ball.
I wonder if Manning's arm was dead at the end of the game. He hardly seemed to throw past 10-15 yards at all.
