View Full Version : Am I wrong?

Having a debate about a play that happened in the Wings game Friday night. Thankfully it had no impact on the outcome of the game.

The play:

Buffalo was to be awarded the ball off a stoppage of play. Before the play began the Buffalo player that had the ball gave it to another Buffalo player. The second player walked over to the right side of the offense while they waited for play to be restarted. The referee then signaled to the first player (in the upper left corner, where play was supposed to be restarted) for play to begin. While all attention was on player one, player two shot and scored.

I am claiming that not only should it have been an illegal play but it wasn't even a "trick play" like others are calling it. What trick? There was no trick. The "trick" occured during a timeout. There is no trick, just illegal play. (why am I imagining my voice sounding like Seinfeld there?)

I have seen other teams perform the hidden ball play but it has always been a very good hidden exchange during play (not easy to pull off as it has been attempted a few times and only successful a couple times). In those cases I tip my hat and say well played to whomever performs it. In this case it's like a magician performing an illusion and the illusion actually taking place while the camera is off. No talent required for that.

Still not sure what sport this question is about.

As you described it...Illegal by my understanding of the rules. So I've concluded, that you are mistaken in your understanding and description. 'Cause there were officials there and everything right?

Oh and I agree about not knowing the sport..I'm just assuming this is basketball.

Should this be in the drunk guy thread?

I've seen this play attempted a couple of times. To me it depends on where the attackers were positioned prior to the ref signaling for play to start, as long as they were both onside and the flankers were outside of the Jerry Box then it seems like a legit play to me.

Sorry. Indoor lacrosse. The refs signal where the play begins, to me that makes it illegal. Sadly the nll doesn't have the greatest track record with quality officials so this wouldn't be the first blown call and not the last (it's like replacement nfl refs).

My biggest complaint is that it makes it look more like sports entertainment, not sports. If i wanted to see the globetrotters i would go to a globetrotters game.

My second biggest is that it's not a trick play when the trick happens when the game is not even being played.

Take it for what it's worth but I have an impression from when I played in high school that a little trickery was part of lacrosse. Similar to the fake ball trick in baseball.

Ps I didn't actually comprehend your post but I assume it has something to do with a player pretending to have the ball.

No issue if there wasn't a stoppage of play when the exchange occurred. Stoppage of play for a timeout. Play supposed to begin at the top left (think left point in hockey lingo). During the timeout player A gave the ball to player B who walked over to right point. Play finally resumes and ref points to player A at left point and signals start of play. Player B walks in a bit and shoots while everyone is looking at player A.

No trick there. No skill required to "successfully" get the ball to player B when play is stopped and the teams are changing up.

Seen the hidden ball trick performed quite well a couple times during actual play where two players cross paths and the flip pass is done and timed perfectly so the defense continues to track the original player that had the ball. At that point it is a nice trick play and I tip my hat to that.

As I said. It would be like watching a magic show on TV and the magician puts something in his hat, then they cut to commercial and during the commercial he takes it out of the hat. When they return he shows you that the hat is empty... tada... that is no trick. Compare it to someone standing in front of you performing slight of hand, that is actually a trick and an accomplishment.

13-8!!!! :D

That orange shoe'd pre-op psycho should be suspended for his stomp to a downed player. Taking 5 steps and jumping on the back of a player's head is not an "accident".

from my days of outdoor lacrosse, it seems like the referees goofed on this one. play should be started from where the ball was awarded, it shouldn't be allowed to move before the whistle IMO
