Must not been enough death for this to be a national story. Within about a 25-30 mile stretch of highway there were two 50+ car accidents yet only one fatality in these messes. Both caused by a sudden burst of snow that made it so nobody could see.

Yea, absolutely crazy. I thankfully didn't have to be anywhere this morning (no class, and even if I did they were closed due to the holiday, and no work). I thought people were confused when I saw 275 but then I finally realized it was a separate accident. Nuts.

Insane, I was only about an hour behind on 75/275 today. Scary stuff

This morning when I left for work I had no clue there was going to be any snow. There were a few small flakes randomly in the air, but nothing substantial. I get about 7 miles from my place and the highway is suddenly a parking lot. I get off at the exit and find 1-2 inches of fresh snow. WTF? Within 5 miles there was only a slight dusting, but an accident. Two miles later the roads are pretty much clear and traffic was moving fine. The light went yellow, so I hit the brakes.

What.

The.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

The car next to me stopped no problem. I went straight through the red into the intersection. The cars had already started out and were spinning their wheels getting started. If I had stopped, I don't know if they could have.

I punched it and made it through. I was still shaking an hour later.

By the way... 7 degrees right now in Detroit. Seven.

That happened to me earlier in December when we got hit with our first snow. Slid right into the first intersection I came across, luckily there weren't any cars coming so I was fine, but still a shaky feeling for sure

My phone says it's 9 degrees here. Was watching the weather guy on TV and he was outside with a little handheld weather device and he said with the wind he has had wind chill hit -18. That was at 10:30. Can't wait to go outside at 5:30 tomorrow morning. :(

I work on the propery damage side for one of the biggest insurance companies out there. I can count on one hand the number of times I have written an estimate for a car that was involved in an accident where a tractor trailer was at fault. Those guys know what they are doing. It is the idiot in the SUV or the 17 year old texting who isn't aware of the conditions they are driving in that cause stuff like this.

hmmm interesting.

I guess I only said that because of the number of trucks I see in this that I said this.

Never heard that before.

Thats because they are to big to stop suddenly when something like this gets going.

-25c (-13f) here right now, feels like -32c (-26f) with the windchill. Supposed to be colder tomorrow.

Why do I live here?

You can't use this anymore, now that you have a hockey team.

I don't know, I love the Jets but is that really enough? I guess if the alternative is Regina then sure :)

The one thing about being out with the dog every morning at 6AM, the rest of the day seems balmy by comparison. It's sunny and 16 out now and I'm totally comfortable in my short stints out there, in comparison with the 0 degrees, total darkness, and 45 minutes I deal with in the morning.

I have a special level of respect for people out on the praries, it is bone chilling cold for most of the year, then when things thaw out the bugs descend to nibble on what ever flesh the frost hasn't taken. It get's cold here, but we'll get the warm winds that will bring us up close to freezing. Out there, it's just bad news.

You also have the mountains a stone's throw away, which makes me so jealous. My wife and I have a couple days off this week and were going to drive down to Walhalla, ND to ski at Frostfire for the day, which to us is a big treat. People near mountains would laugh at such a hill, and for us it is worth 5 hours in the car.

But of course it's going to be -22 and we might also get 5cm of snow so we decided to just cancel the outing anyways. Yay for the prairies!

Apparently the kid that was killed in this was a next-door neighbor of a co-worker. Word is that the family got out of the car after the accident and was standing near the median. The median has three thick metal cables under high tension as a divider rather than a traditional guardrail or concrete wall. Another car slid into the cables, snapping them, and the cable swung around and hit the 12 year old girl in the head, killing her.
