iPad and iMessage frustration

So I've been able to get my iPad to recognize my phone number. I can send iMessages from the iPad through the number. What is coming to the number and iPhone is not being received on the iPad. Anyone able to figure this out - i've searched every online resource for days and have found nothing useful.

Are you sending to other iOS users? Only works with apple products.

It has to do with where you initiate the iMessage. If you begin the message "thread" on your iPhone, it will never appear on your iPad because your iPad cannot receive messages that are tied to the phone number even if you set the phone number up as an iMessage alias.
