View Full Version : How long have you been a member of this community?

poll forthcoming

Antmeister and I were talking about how long we've been with FOFC. I've been a part of the community since 2004 and Ant joined in late 2003 but was a lurker since 2000.

So what brought you here? For me, it was listening to Ant busting up after reading some story on the board, or I'd give him what I thought were breaking news and he'd say, "That's old news, it's been on the board for hours". So I had to check it out and I'm glad I did. You guys are a bunch of unique, sarcastic, quick-witted characters and I'm glad to know you.

Not sure how to answer this. I wrote 3 posts on the old board in total and was mainly a lurker. So not sure if that qualifies as 11+ years. Because I didn't officially post on this board until 2003.

I think I came here looking for a good football simulation after Front Page Sports Football Pro sort of imploded. I started on the old Sideline board.

With kids, work, and incompatible technology, I have not played FOF in many years, although it is still one of my favorites. I still come to the board because I enjoy the conversation more than other message boards or blogs I have read.

Yikes!

<------12 years already?

Like most, looking for something more than console gaming, more stats/strategy based. For the first few years, I posted sparingly, and only in the FOFC forum.

Then, being in SW PA, I learned of the legend of the Pumpy, migrated to the OT forum, and have been hooked ever since.

A long time.

My join date here is October 2000, but I feel like I first posted on an older message board, but it was only like one post.

It's pretty crazy to think how long it' been. Still, this is really the only message board/community I have ever really been involved in any kind of way. It meets all of my needs: sports, news, pop culture, video games, board games, etc.

I bought the first FOF and loved it. That's how I found this place. I believe the first post I ever had on any FOF message board was about how I enjoyed to infusing some aspect of "role playing" into the game to make it seem more real or something like that.

Yeah, I officially registered back about 11 years ago, but I was a lurker for a few months before that. I was looking for a football game like OOTP and found this.

I've been thinking that this board has been moving into its golden years, but it's still the place I frequent the most throughout the day.

And yes, I feel old too, not Bucc old, but old as compared to, you know, the 20 something I was when I started here and had only 1 kid.

10 years when September gets here.

I found out this place and FOF because someone from here came over to the OOTP boards and was posting a bunch of crap over something. Then, someone told them to take their BS back over to FOFC and I had to find out what FOFC was.

The old board for me. Was that FOF2?

I miss those days, the discussions were almost all about the game.

I can still remember the exact day this board was ruined. I checked to see if a TCY patch had been posted, but the first several threads were all from that cocksucking turd of a screen name Kodos, such as "How popular were you in high school?"

Jim's link to the patch was well down the page.

I knew then this forum would never be about Jim's games again.

I started at Sideline but posted very little there. The I received an email about FOFC and signed up and somehow over 12 years have passed since.

When I joined FOFC:
-My oldest daughter was 1 month old.
-I had just turned 31 and was working as a program analyst.
-Had been married for 6 years.
-Had only flown twice in my life (vaction with wife in Vegas and vacation with wife in Jamaica).
-Had only left the country one time, Jamaica.
-Had worked just 2 jobs since high school, a retail stint for a while before getting into casino/IT.
-Ran a site simleague.net in which I had a BBPro 98 league running on the site.

Since joining:
-Oldest daughter is 12 and youngest will be 9 on Monday.
-Now 43 and a Program Manager for a third party casino ccompany.
-Have been married for 18 years.
-Not even sure how many times I have flown at this point, though almost all for work reasons.
-Have now been to India (multiple times), Germany, China, Canada as well as the original Jamaica.
-Not including the job I had when I started, I have worked 4 different jobs (though it really endes up being the 2 playces two times) and unfortunately had a year and a half of being out of work and having medical problems during that span.
-Expanded simleague.net to include two different BBPro leagues (one that I ran and one that someone who was in my original league ran), an OOTP historical league, a NASCAR Racing league, a Pro Basketball league and was trying to start a college basketball league. EA attempted to strong arm me to give up the site, threatening a lawsuit because of the game The Sims, saying I was trying to use the popularity of that game to "sell" the site. They didn't do much research to see that not only had I run the site since well before that game came out but that I was not making any money on the site but was doing it as a hobby. Have since stopped running that site and I see that WhatIfSports has since gobbled up the name.

I came here from Madden. Someone on the MaddenMania boards, where I was, recommended EA Sports's FOF 2k1 for me, since i Loved the GM Mode of Madden so much. That led me to play it, check out FOF, and so the story began.

I was a member of the Sideline at GA Sports since it opened, and I even remember when Tony Wyss posted a message at the GA High Heat board (was it called The Dugout?) announcing the creation of the site.

I was originally member #67 here, and became #1 when I moved the board over to vBulletin.

I must admit fofc has been an important thing in my life, helping me to improve my English a lot for example, along with a better understanding of the USA culture and way of thinking outside text books, that has helped me a lot in my work career in the internet business. Thanks to Fofc i now can think and even dream in English, something you can usually only accomplish after living for some time in a new country.

I too was back around during the Sideline days. I stumbled upon this group from the Sierra boards around the time of the NFL Football Pro '99 fiasco. We were all looking for a new alternative, and FOF was mentioned. I remember seeing the newsgroup articles in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.sports about the game and shortly thereafter joined the Sideline iteration of our community.

For those wondering about the "incident", it was almost exactly 13 years ago. Here is a link to an earlier thread, with more info and insight.

What is crazy to me is that through all the drama that happens in life, and the strong opinions that have been expressed on this board regarding religion, politics, Katrina, 9/11 etc. It amazes me the same core of people have consistently come back year after year. Stuff like this sometimes tears families and friends apart but to see a majority of us are in the 9+range is quite remarkable.

For whatever reason, I thought this was a way smaller group.

I joined in the Fall of 2001. Now I look at the results of this poll and I just sit back and say "Wow, guess all those policies are just bringing in the newbies in DROVES"

Almost 2/3 of the membership that answered the poll is over 11 years here. Its kind of disturbing.

Most of this applies to me too, ignoring the fact that I have little use of English in my work. We (the dutch) always claim we're so good in teaching our kids foreign languages and about cultures in (high) school, but the reality is that I would have still struggled with the English languauge without my time at FOFC. Ditto concerning culture in the USA.

FWIW, I generally feel like both you & Icy are virtually seamless with your English here.

What I suspect has happened with both of you is that you've picked up common usage rather than technically perfect English, which prevents you from standing out.

(although in the quote above the phrase "little use of English" would probably most frequently be said as "little use for English" ;) )

I read as much FOF content as I could on the board in the early days but skimmed completely over all the board politic stuff. In retrospect, I'm kind of fascinated by that stuff and the evolution of these boards over the last 15 years. But then I try to take a peek back, maybe at the web.archive, or just now looking at STIX's last post in the forum from 2001 and I just can't follow it. I have no idea what he's talking about. I mean, I get the modern disputes involving photos and general asshattery, but for some reason I just can't stay with whatever the hell was going on back then.

It's interesting to look back at the evolution of threads from being all-FOF to what it is now.

I wonder how it'll all end. I guess there'll be a snowball effect eventually where there's fewer and fewer posts, and then you reach that critical point where the board so longer seems "active", and that causes people to stop coming, and then the death spiral. But how long until that happens? Are we talking 10 years? It's probably more likely that operation sports eventually goes away, and then there's maybe some half-ass attempt to establish a new site, but only a few people make the jump, and then things just never get going and instead die out. It's kind of an interesting social-internet dynamic, how message boards "die".

You have the oldest thread on the board, at least according to the board statistics. It was a goodbye post and you said you were never coming here again. :)

Which reminds me of something harldy related. I think I never commented on your previous signature, the one that included the name of Abraham Kuyper. I suspect that is the same Abraham Kuijper (original spelling) of whom a statue was revealed in Maassluis a couple of years ago. Completely off topic, clearly, but for whatever reason it felt appropriate to mention. :D

I've been around since the Sideline days, though I was computerless for a while and missed the migration to GameSpy. It took me a while to find where the board had gone, but found it again in 2000 (though my handle back then was "JeeberDMack").

I think I first found the Sideline by doing an AltaVista search about FOF when I first discovered FOF2. MIJB and I were both newbs at the same time over there...

My posting has cut dramatically over the past few years thanks to marriage and kid(s). I'm sure some of you *cough*Bucc*cough* are happy about that... ;)

FOF was one that came up, read the bio about the game,

Yep, that's how I found FOF. I was looking for an alternative to FPS, and saw the raves about FOF. But I was making $20,000, so spending money on a game from a guy selling them out of his garage seemed crazy. The day I finally decided I should take the plunge was the day Jim posted FOF1 had sold out.

10 years when September gets here.

I found out this place and FOF because someone from here came over to the OOTP boards and was posting a bunch of crap over something. Then, someone told them to take their BS back over to FOFC and I had to find out what FOFC was.

10 years for me come October. Also first heard of fofc on the OOTP boards and IIRC what a badass place fofc could be:) Lurked a bit and found it an interesting board to hang out at. I think I joined when I bought my first FOF.

Unless I am away from home I probably log in here at least once a day.

many many hours of enjoyment with all versions of the game and even more from lurking the forum... from a 16 year old high schooler on dial up internet to a 30 year old professional, from ice weasels to the grassy knoll discussions, it's been a great ride.
