Right now I'm listening to the soundtrack from the movie, "Babe." That pig sure can squeel out the high notes.

Of course, the fact that my children are on the couch behind me watching the movie might have something to do with it.

I just ordered a cd from Honeycomb, but it hasn't arrived yet. :( I have high hopes for it though... it's one half of the band Lotion, which I consider to be the most underrated band in history.

Otherwise I've mostly been listening to a 70's and 80's Britpop mix cd I made. Joe Jackson, Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Madness, etc.

Since we're talking about music, what entertainment system recommendations would yous guys have for speakers. I'm looking to drop about $300 on a speaker system soon because I don't know what I'd do in college without one. I want something that 5.1 surround and THX.

This (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10333157&dcaid=1688) is what I'm considering being it's the best I've seen so far. Does anyone have any recommendations.

I haven't looked at speakers in a while, but Klipsch usually makes very good ones. They came out with their first set of computer speakers (this was a few years ago) a few days after I ordered a new computer with Altec Lansing 5.1 speakers. :( I'd at least check them out,

I mainly listen to hip hop - Mobb Deep's getting a lot of time on my stereo right now. Maybe it's the angry side of me? There's a really great LP from a couple of years ago, too - 'The Unseen' by Quasimoto. It's great, even for people who don't like that dreaded 'rap' music. I'm getting back into all that old hardcore stuff, too: Big Black, Dead Kennedys. Oh, and as anyone heard of the 80s Matchbox Beeline Disaster yet?

Ouch. I spent 10 hours - not to mention $325 - listening to/watching a couple of online video seminars yesterday. Really, it was preferable to going to the seminars, since I could do whatever I wanted while I listened. I laid on the bed for awhile, watched some baseball, reconciled the check book, and took care of 3 rebates that had been laying around. I don't know if I'd call it "good times," but it wasn't all that bad. And I now only need 1.5 hours to fulfill my requirements, which will be a piece a cake.

That album kicked my ass, then it went over to my grandma's house and kicked her ass.

He's a Nashville-based power pop singer/songwriter who put out one fantastic album in 1999, then had record company issues for several years and has finally been able to record and release a second album. He was in a band in the early 90's called The Semantics, which had more of a Southern power pop sound than anything. The band almost featured a drummer named Ben Folds, but he left to form BF5 before The Semantics recorded its first album.

There's probably 14 people who know who he is, but his first album is amazingly good and probably can be had for cheap in a cut-out bin - it's well worth it. Kinda like Brendan Benson and Jason Falkner - great songerwriters who can't keep a record deal and go 4-6 years without releasing new music. The record industry sucks.

Here's the review from allmusic.com of his first album:

"Alabama born multi-instrumentalist Will Owsley followed a career path not unlike Sheryl Crow's, by backing up big mainstream pop artists, collecting the rewards and channeling them into his own solo work. Owsley plied his wares in the bands of Shania Twain and Amy Grant in the mid-'90s, then recorded his own material at home, and offered the finished product to record companies on a take-it-or-leave-it basis — just like Tom Scholz did with the first Boston album, Owsley notes. Giant Records took it, and released Owsley's debut in 1999. Another of Owsley's old bands contained Ben Folds, and their like-mindedness is hard to miss; this album's "Zavelow House" and "Sonny Boy" are practically Ben homages. While both craft pop hooks which make similarly instant impressions, Owsley toughens them up with meatier singing and crunching guitars, avoiding the occasional maudlin sensibilities of Folds' stuff — the "wimp factor" is wisely absent here. Owsley's power-chord crunch and serviceable soloing amplify matters in songs like "Oh No the Radio" and "I'm Alright." Owsley's sonic references originate in the '70s: there's Todd Rundgren's keyboard melodicism, the offbeat arrangements of 10cc, and even a throwback to the stylized country-rock of Dave Mason. In terms of amplitude and attitude, though, this album is a direct product of the late '90s. Owsley is about as ideal as pop solo debuts get; like Jason Falkner Presents Author Unknown and the first Folds album, it introduces expert tunesmithing and by an unassuming musical personality. Smart, tasty and guilt-free."

Indeed. They were probably even more influental than The Ramones and The Talking Heads in terms of how many bands adopted similiar sounds. You can hear their influence in just about any indie rock band these days.

I have nothing to add to this discussion, but everytime I've come to this board in the past couple days I've seen this thread bumped near the top with Astralhaze as the last post. I thought he was turning it into the longest and most pointless dola ever.

Have you ever read the book "Please Kill Me: an oral history of punk rock" ?

It's the only other place I've seen Television get their due. I also heavily recommend it, it's an amazingly fascinated book, as well as a real guide to the pre-punk/punk music movement.

Just recently purchased the new Joseph Arthur and am awaiting Tuesday's release date for the new Rufus Wainwright and Collective Soul (despite the first single's riff sounding suspiciously like a fast tempo rip-off of King Nothing).

Over the weekend, I listened to a bit of Ayreon - Human Equation and Neal Morse - Testimony.

In the car today, I have Jason Falkner's Can You Still Feel? and Tea Party's Seven Circles.

Funny that this was bumped today. In my last post, the first band listed was Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Well, I just happen to be listening to them again now. This time, it's their final installment of the Christmas trilogy, "The Lost Christmas Eve", that I just picked up a couple of weeks ago. Tonight's the first time I'll be listening to the whole thing. So far so good, but I'm only on song 2 of 23.

Before tonight, the last CD I listened to was good ol' Ben E Lou.
