Vista had its issues, but I loved Windows Mail for my private imap email account. Now I'm on Windows 8 and about to throw my machine through, well, the window. The mail app is truly ridiculous-looking even for a 5 year old and doesn't seem to work for me anyway.

So I'm looking for a desktop mail program for W8 - any recommendations? Hate to shell out money for Outlook. Hate to shell out money to Microsoft period. I tried moving Winmail from Vista to W8 per instructions found from googling, but after 4 hours of those unsuccessful efforts I gave up...

thanks in advance.

Windows Live Mail is probably the closest thing to the old Windows Mail client. It is part of the Windows Essential package.

Thunderbird is the Mozilla desktop mail client, it worked well for me back when I used it.

Windows live mail. It imports easily as well.

Is there a reason you want a desktop client? Gmail has come a long way.

Non-dola

It was really simple to move mails. Just save all the archives and contacts and then import with newly installed livemail.

yea, I use gmail for my personal. Have a solo side business that I used network solutions for my website / email and I hate their webmail. So I used Windows Mail for that (and now looking for an alternative...)

You can also use GMail for a POP account instead of using a desktop client.

Not directly, only way it works with IMAP is using a desktop client as a go between.
