At a golf tournament and am getting a ride back to the clubhouse standing on the back of a golf cart. (Yes I am a moron). Golf cart hts a ump and I lose y balance. I slam to the concrete with a broken hip. Six weeks i cannot put any pressure on left leg. I have to hope the therapy saves the bone. If not, i will haveto get a full hip replacemen.

Other than being sore as hell and terrified Im going to have an accident and put weight down, I am doing well. Could be dead, a hip ill deal with.

If you ever think about he golf cart thing, just dont do it.

With that thread title, there was only one way this could end.

Take Care of yourself, and get a good Physical Therapist that will bust your ass.

Oh and I can now see a new trend of answers in the latest IWS thread.

I cannot even fathom the pain I would be in if i tried that now. If i tried it 5 days ago? Id have a broken leg instead. All things being equal, i would rather have that tan this.

Here is my new hip. Went for the check up today, surgery was successful. Everything looks good as of right now. Still hoping I dodged a bullet and won't have to get a full replacement:

I work with a guy who had both his hips replaced when he was in his late 30's or early 40's. Sounds unfun but he's infinitely more mobile than I am right now... ;)

Your hardware looks cool. I recently had an MRI of my back done, it was fun to see the hardware in the MRI (as opposed to the typical look of it in the x-ray). Happy healing!

They keep telling me that, but I really don't want to have to go through this again.

My physical therapist (ie: tortureist) says I am doing great and am well ahead of schedule with my flexibility. She has me going through about 25 minutes worth of hard exercises. I am doing those exercises twice a day on my own I can almost bend my knee 100% and can feel the muscles loosening. One month from yesterday I go back to the docs and assuming nothing has gone wrong, I will get to put weight down.

I really don't know what the time line is after that. I expect I'll be walking with a cane for awhile. So long as the pain goes down and I can keep getting the strength up, I'll be ok.

Did a google search for something like "standing on the back of a golf cart" and one of the first links was a high school girl who was doing what I was doing and died from the injuries of her fall. I'm incredibly lucky to just be dealing with hip pain.

Glad you're progressing well!

I can sympathize with "not wanting to go through it again." Not from the hip, of course, but my other issues...I don't know if you've gone through it but pain & recovery from a major injury can often cause people to go through some crazy mental crap, too, or bouts of frustration/pseud-depression. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk...

Not sounding like a know it all, I have done it many times in my life. All it takes is the one time you lose your grip, then you are flying through the air and slamming on concrete. I cannot stress enough that I am lucky it was a hip. I can tell you I will never do it again.

This is the first time in my life I have went through this amount of pain. I had never been in surgery before, never spent the nightvat a hospital as a patient and never felt this helpless before. If it wasn't for m wife, I have no idea how I would be getting through this.

It has only been two weeks, I am going to recover, and I am an uncredibly positive person. . . yet there has still been bouts of what you describe. This has changed the way I look at a lot of things.

Quick update:

They stopped my therapy a week ago. They told me there was nothing more they could do for me until I could put weight down. I have 100% flexibility in the knee. I can do 30 to 40 reps of every exercise they give me without problem and I have only one muscle causing me any serious pain now. (the one right along the incision line)

I go back to the docs next Tuesday and if the XRays look good, I should be able to put weight down and start walking again. I've been told I could pick things right back up in a couple of weeks or it could take me two months to figure it all out again. (I'm thinking more like 3 days, I'll walk 20 miles a day with my damned walker if I have to.)

If the break didn't heal correctly or the hip bone is dying, the news won't be as positive, but it won't be horrible either. I'll just get a new hip and go through this for a few more weeks.

Before I write this, I can honestly say I have had a positive attitude throughout the process.

With that said, the mental aspect of this entire thing has been grueling. If this were a broken leg and I had a 99 percent chance to heal fine, I could deal with it a lot better. The idea thta I can do everything right and still have a 30 percent chance of something going south? I guess I play too much poker and have watched a one outer on the river fall a few too many times.

No matter how today goes, I will be good. I just had no idea how hard this would be.

I hope you are getting good news today. I had ruptured my achilles tendon back in April and today is three weeks since I had the surgery to repair it. Reading about your experience and how you've handled it has really helped me alot in my own recovery.

I can definately identify with the challenging mental aspect. Since there was so much time between when I was injured and when I got the achilles repaired, there is a chance that the calf muscle may not extend back to its proper length. This means that I'll need more surgery. The rough part is that I won't know any of this until I've gone through rehab, which hopefully will begin tomorrow when I have my own doctor's visit.

Ok, my news was very positive, but not quite what I wanted either.

Exact quote from doctor. "If anyone is going to recover 100 percent from this procedure, it will be you"

Xrays look great. Flexibility is great. Fracture healed well. Physical therapy and working out on my own has been better than expected. Bone loos terrific.

All of that said, he wants to take this slow. I can now put 50 percent on my left leg. I weigh around 200 pounds, he told me to put my left foot on a scale and put pressure until it gets to 100. That is how much weight I can put on it.

I will do this for a month and then go back to see if I get cleared for a cane and 100 percent weight. Everything goes well, I should be walking without a cane by the middle of August. If I fought this, I could likely move up the timelines, but why fight it? It's six more weeks until a full recovery and then I have my whole life ahead of me with a good hip. No need to risk that to move the timeline up a coupe of weeks.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I'll continue to update this until I can put a picture of me swinging a golf club here. :). It's my fofc diary.

I wish you well. We should start a long term injury thread on fofc for dealing with this crap. Kristen would have to moderate it though. She puts my little surgery to shame. (A big thank you to Kristen, I appreciated the insight)

OK, so four weeks later, back at the docs office today.

100% weight baring allowed. I must use a cane for 4 weeks while the leg gets stronger. The leg feels great, but putting 100% pressure for too long causes some pain. I need to ease back into things.

I've been walking this morning using the walker as simply a balance device until I can get my stride back to normal. It feels VERY awkward. No idea how I felt as a kid, but I feel like I'm having to relearn how to walk again. My stride is way off of what it should be, leg is stiff (even though I have full flexibility). It's just really strange.

Never, ever, never break a hip gang. There was a scare where they thought the bones weren't healing the way they should. But, finally, today, I got word that the surgery was 100% successful. The bone has healed 100%. I have 6 weeks of therapy and I should be able to return to normality. As it is, I can walk without a cane now and can do whatever the pain allows me to do as long as it does not involve running or jumping.

It's been over 5 months since the golf cart fall, but it now looks like it will all be ok. And I get to keep my real hip. WOO HOO!!!!

If FOFC were a bar, I'd say drinks were on me. Instead, I'll just wish all of your favorite football teams success. ********

Could Modern Medicine Have Saved Bo Jackson's Career? (http://regressing.deadspin.com/could-modern-medicine-have-saved-bo-jacksons-career-1443105382)

Interesting article. I know they were concerned about the blood vessels surrounding the hip and the doctor felt if any of them were to have ruptured I could have lost my leg. He said there was a 30% chance the ball of the hip would die due to no blood getting to it.

I could not walk after my injury. I was on the concrete laying on my right hand side. My left leg was about 5 to 7 inches shorter than the right leg and my foot was rotated to the right and could not be moved. When I swung my body to try to get up, all I ended up getting was a ton of pain and the left leg did not move an inch.

I fell at about 5 pm. Xrays were taken around 6:30 PM, was told I would have surgery within an hour at 7 PM and was in the operating room at 7:30PM. I came to a little after 12 AM and had my first therapy session at 8:30 AM. I cannot believe it's been over 5 months now. I am going to go to the driving range this weekend. :) :)
