View Full Version : General Manager and Coach league?

So reading the announcement thread, there seems to be a separation between people who want to play as a general manager and people who want to play as a coach. Would a MP league where these duties are split between two different people be possible, and if so, would people be interested in it?

Interesting thought...

...there seems to be a separation between people who want to play as a general manager and people who want to play as a coach...I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. Sure, there are those who want one or the other, but I suspect that a significant portion of the FOF community (maybe even a majority) wants to have a hand in at least part of both aspects. Often "GM" style players want to set the depth chart, but not game plan. and "Coach" style players don't want to fool with all the details of renegotiating contracts, but want to draft players and sign FAs. I know that I wouldn't be willing to turn over one side of things to the AI or another human, and I doubt I'm alone in that. Sure, it might be appealing to some, but in the cases where I've seen it tried in leagues, it typically doesn't work out.

As a "GM" style player, I think you're right, that most want to set the depth charts. But how much of that is because they don't trust Rex to do it (and any depth chart setting is just to ensure basic realism)? I think it might be a different story if there's another human on the other end there, and the communications between those two could be interesting.

I'm not a "Coach" style player, but I'm sure those types do draft players and sign FAs. I mean, they have to, otherwise they can't field a team, right?

But it's interesting to note that this has been tried in other leagues. Can you go into that some more?

I've highlighted the main answer to why it doesn't work. IRL, these guys are paid a buttload of money, so they work together, sometimes begrudgingly. Take it to FOF, and when one of them does something the other doesn't like, it's just "screw this...I'd just rather do it all myself."

That's when the GM fires the coach and hires a different one.

This sounds interesting, IMO - PMing back and forth trying to discuss potential moves and whatnot, the GM controls the contractual side of things, the coach (who can be fired and hired by a different GM) game plans and chooses lineups.

It would definitely require a lot of people to work, though. I think the perfect time to try this (if someone wanted to try it again) would be shortly after the release of the new game, when the potential GM/coach pool is biggest.

If this ever does happen, I'd love to be the GM of Cinci.

I think that could be a lot of fun. I think it would be fun to work collaboratively with someone yet have a clear separation of duties. It would also provide backup when one is busy. I would do it.

There is a game out there that does this. (wont name it in respect of FOF)

It allows a GM to hire/fire real peeps as head coaches. And the GM(or the HC if the GM grants him permission) hires offensive, defensive coordinators and special team coaches. I think a special teams coach is overkill imo.

They also have real peeps that coach the college ranks with staffs as well. And the players that they coach enter the draft. Everybody have budgets both pros and college. And everything costs money and time, including traveling to scout players or teams, practicing, camps and combines if the GM chooses to attend. The amount of money it costs depends on how far away you have to travel and whether you fly or drive there. It costs more to fly but takes less time. And you still have to drive to and from the airport to the stadium or players house for visits etc...

So yes it can be done.

But it is prolly a big undertaking and im not sure about the copyright stuff.
But combine and adapt that with FOF and wow.
