Here's the scenario ... you're planning hamburgers at home for dinner but just before you start to cook you realize that you're out of buns.

What do you do?

I'm cooking hamburgers as we speak, and though I have buns available, I will be going with a couple of slices of fresh baked rye bread.

Wrap some bacon around the edge of those burgers, cook, and serve like a steak.

I really don't like burgers on bread (like white bread), but I'd use it in a pinch instead of running to the store.

Voted Trout because there's two different scenarios here.

1. I want a hamburger.
In this scenario, I have not spent much time getting the patty together and it's going to be nothing special. In this case, a loaf of bread is just fine.

2. I'm making hamburgers.
In this scenario, I've made these burgers and they're going to be freaking amazing. A bun is absolutely required for these burgers.

Yep.

The effort that goes into the patty is proportionally related to the quality of bread required.

Do I have any donuts? If not, go with taco shells.

we do this.

I think there are a lot of other factors involved such as how far away is the store, how many beers deep am I, etc...

Hamburgers require buns.

This. Unless it's a genuine hamburger steak (like I had at a restaurant in Japan, which was absolutely delicious).

Hot dogs can make do with bread, but not hamburgers.

I am the exact opposite. The juices from the tube of meat need to be better encased with a crust than a chopped round or sirloin steak do.

Hot dogs in a piece of bread is just gross. Just use a knife and fork.

*I* could eat a burger w/o a bun, but don't think the family would go for it. I make a quick run to the store to get them. Hell, I ran to the store because I was 1/4 cup short for a batch of instant grits the other night (it's less than a mile away).

Put a little effort into it and go get the required buns to make it legit.

I would either eat them with buns or with nothing at all. Sliced bread is terrible for hamburgers, because if you cook the burger right, you'll end up having a huge hole in the bread.
